making waltenfiles analysis post in the comfort of my own main blog. the mounted buck. is driving me CRAZY it is such striking symbolism. especially with it being associated with jack

like aaaaurgh how do i articulate this. i’ve contrasted it already with the recurring imagery of Jack’s head being cut off or cut out in photos, and how I like that as a representation of the way Sophie remembers him (or rather, the way she doesn’t.)

and like that cut-off head imagery is already really striking but like. GOD this is really something else. Like, the fact that it’s the corpse of something. And it’s been prettied up and stuffed and mounted like a trophy. the fact that it’s a game animal. the way that the cut-off head imagery is striking but in the way that feels oddly respectful towards Jack Walten as a man who has disappeared. It rings alike to how you would put a blanket over a body, or close the eyelids of someone who died with them open. How this is the complete polar opposite of that.

the meat of this to me is the thought that Maybe, if the cut-off head is to represent the way Jack is remembered by Sophie, then the mounted buck is to represent the way Jack is remembered by Felix? Which is really compelling to me. The way it gamifies his death, how it literally objectifies him. like this is So Loaded i love this fucking image so much

#lots of thoughts about j/ack w/alten as a person becoming divorced from jack walten as an idyllic representation of a concept or several- #-concepts #idea of how felix always saw him as the perfect man leading the perfect life (a representation of everything he was lacking) and how in- #-killing him (or negligently allowing him to be killed/disappear. if im being charitable) he became a representation of felix rejecting the- #-desire to have those things entirely. and resigning himself to a life of self-destruction #but also here he’s a representation of like. His Own death/disappearance. where he is literally a trophy of something which was killed. #the kind of thing you hang up in your home to prove this was something you took the life of. to wordlessly brag about it #many many thoughts
