I think we are focusing on the wrong thing when talking about mainstream romantasy adult books, instead of shaming straight cis women for reading kinky books, we should tralk about how most of the newer books aimed at that demographic are just conservative propoganda, rebranding patriarchy as a kink.

There's nothing inherently wrong about liking the types of kinks that are present, control, power imbalance, dark themes, but when you really look at the top performing novels (which they are mass prodicing at questionable speeds) it's hard to ignore the ever present morally grey man, who's posessive over the heroine who starts off as otherworldly different from the 'regular woman' aka damsel in distress), is cruel to everyone except her, and the fantasy world revolves around the control of women, especially when it comes to forced pregnancy.

And by a little bit I mean they should have been SO instinctively driven by animalistic need that they’re always, always ONE Bad Situation™️ from absolutely Losing It All. Everything but guttural snarls ripped free from their throats, bloodshot eyes and spit drooling down fanged teeth. I want them to lose their voice, unable to form lies wrapped in silver and promises dipped in honey, unable to form words worthy of someone of their stature, of someone born to be high and mighty and important. How is it that Feyre was also ignored by their father and Nesta and Elain's teachers and every single other person in that household?

I find it hard to believe that Feyre couldn't read at 11, ( when Nesta seduced that Duke at 14 , Feyre was 11 and they were still rich) unless she was actively dodging her teachers at every turn. Was wild child Feyre so wild that no one could pin her down long enough to teach her to read? They got as far as the alphabet only? And if that is the case, (let's believe it for a sec) then wouldn't Feyre's illiteracy be her own fault?

I keep trying to record something on how books are bad at writing fighting training, and it keeps being like 12 minutes long

The latter.

Basically, "more skilled person just beats the person they're training at sparring until the person they're training improves without doing any fundamentals or teaching them the right way to do things" is a cruel and useless form of "training" and only makes sense if you're trying to show that the "teacher" is being cruel or doesn't know how to teach. Showing it as a legitimate and useful form of training indicates to me that the author didn't bother to do any real research.

I've trained in three styles of karate and one sword form. (I suck at all of them) All of them had the same basic approach to training, which NEVER involved sparring with the teacher. Generally you weren't allowed ANY sparing with anyone until you had mastered the fundamentals.

And it was DAMN similar to the ballet training my parents put me through as a kid.

I'm sure someone with actual knowledge around here can give a good how to write fight training, but the minimum is:

Learn the basic position and the basic motions.

Repeat them until you can do them in yuor sleep.

Get paired with someone AT YOUR LEVEL and do basic moves in pairs (one attacks one blocks, then switch) until you can't stand anymore

String those basic moves together into a series of moves.

Repeat THAT until you can do it in your sleep.

Get paired with someone on your level and do series of moves against each other until you can't stand anymore

After about six months of this you might be ready to practice sparring with someone on your level. NOT the teacher.

The only form that I remember doing any significant amount of partnered work with the teacher was when I studied katori shintō-ryū for a couple years in college, but that's mostly because a huge chunk of what we did was partnered work, and because they had a pretty specific teaching process.

But we weren't sparring, most of the katas were just partnered katas.

When all you do is throw someone inexperienced into sparring, at best they will learn terrible habits and at worst they will get hurt.

And I just want to say, an instructor is never *just* sparring a white belt.

We start with drills and basics, and do partner work with them. And if we do free spar with a white belt, it's for a purpose. We're usually trying to coach on how to apply the drill we just reviewed. Occasionally we're trying to see where they're at, especially if they have previous martial arts training. Very frequently we're sparring the most nervous beginners because we have the experience and control necessary to show that hey! No one should be getting hurt here! See! It's a tap, when I get a point, it's a tap! Now you tap me, see, you got it! Sparring is not scary, I promise!

But yeah, drills and explanations and more drills are such a large part of it. Even in advanced ranks. We still do drills (basic and more advanced) and then do free spar with the intention of incorporating that drill.

Feyre was horrified that Mor's family would marry her off at the age of seventeen, but Feyre mentioned in book one how her mother was planning advantageous marriages for Nesta and Elain. Their mother died when Nesta was twelve, and Elain was eleven. That means that their mother was grooming Nesta and Elain their entire childhood to sell them into a marriage alliance to be used for their breeding potential before they entered puberty. But somehow Feyre wants to victimize herself because she wasn't pretty enough to be groomed and sold off? I can understand how, as a child, Feyre may not have understood what was going on, but as an adult she should be able to look back at her childhood and realize the horrors that Nesta and Elain went through, especially when their background is so similar to Mor's. Instead, Feyre still chooses to victimize herself because their abusive mother neglected her, not understanding that in their case, that was a good thing.

Feyre was also horrified at the concept of the Illyrians hitting children, but Nesta spent her entire childhood being beat to the point that she still has a scar from one of her punishments.

Yes, Feyre was neglected by her family, but so were Nesta and Elain. Pre-poverty, Feyre was loved by their father and neglected by their mother. Pre-poverty, Elain was loved by their grandmother, loved but neglected by their father, and groomed by their mother. Pre-poverty, Nesta was physically and emotionally abused by their grandmother, groomed by their mother and neglected by their father.

This is why I'll never understand why Feyre stans buy into Nesta's line that Feyre had it worse. We can piece together enough of canon to know that's not true. Feyre may think that she had it worse, but that's because she doesn't seem to understand the true horrors of what her sisters endured.

I know I put it literally into sympathy, but when feyre tells mor "I want my sisters to hear your story" it feels so hollow. Bb, they lived her story. Maybe it could interpretted as feyre understanding that and wanting to show her sisters how someone can move on...

But then mor is such a cunt to nesta and babies elain too. Like she's not helping here because Mor, for all her similar upbringing, has rhys and Az and Cass letting her be Spunky YA protag.

Like feyre, sweetie, you do not understand what your sisters lived through. Which, ya know makes sense considering you don't even bother to ask anyone their name.
