‘Hell raining down’: People in Rafah recount horror of Israeli raids

Overnight bombardment in Rafah comes as Hamas says Israel’s planned ground assault would derail truce talks.

I don’t even know what to highlight here anymore. The horror stories from last night are so harrowing. Israel is still saying they’re going to push for the ground invasion in Rafah and the “evacuation” of everyone there. Protestors are still blocking vital aid for Gaza from crossing the Israeli border. When will this end?

I hope I'm not derailing OP's point but I also want to say that 1. they're right and 2. not only can you just Not, but you can also say "Not Right Now."

Tertiary education institutions benefit from us convincing teenagers that they have to embark on their studying Right This Fucking Second in the same way retailers on sale benefit from urgency pricing, but actually... schools are just as happy to take your money at 36 or 52 or 63 as they were to take it at 19 years old.

If people feel like they're not really sure, or they're struggling to make ends meet and can't keep up with the load of studying, or they really want to drop out but they're stuck thinking "what if I miss out and my whole life is fucked up?" in a panic, it's really not as permanent a choice as our society wants us to think it is.

So not only should it be normal to drop out (or just not go!) if it's not for you, but people also shouldn't feel like they're making this huge, catastrophic life choice when they do drop out. Universities are pretty enduring institutions. If it sucks, hit the bricks. They'll definitely be there if you decide you want to go back and study later.

Monday, January 29th: Hello everyone, I’m Gemma, a bi, mentally ill, and disabled woman in desperate need of help, as I'm struggling to keep my utilities on and pay my rent this month as it is overdue by £144.92!!

I am so sorry to be making this post at such an inconvenient time, but I'm struggling so terribly right now to make ends meet while on welfare/disability. And since the festive season, I have been in desperate need of aid to keep my utilities on, as it has been colder than expected, and I have had to put my utilities onto emergency credit a few times this month, especially with all the storms ravaging the UK right now.

I've already contacted my council in regards to my rent, and they’ve told me to pay what I can towards it, but I dont have any money to do so. And I know this is a huge ask, and I'm completely heartbroken to be asking for help again, but I really need some as I don't receive my welfare or ADP until the 31st. The minimum I need is £145 for my rent. If I can cover that, then my utilities can wait. However, my goal is £200!!

If anyone could spare any amount to help me, it would save my life, and sharing definitely helps just as much as donations. Thank you!! ❤️

Hello. I just got in contact with a group in Seattle making "solidarity" art and I wanted to know what that means to you. Is acknowledging the horrors in Gaza the most effective way to make Palestinians feel seen? Or is there more value in incorporating symbols of resilience, like olive trees, watermelons, and spoons?

By acknowledging, I mean create something enraging, like depicting the drastically different living conditions on the Palestinian and Israeli sides of the border wall. Healthy people in open farmland on one side and a warzone on the other. Or is it better to include a little hope? One idea I've been mulling over is painting a Palestinian child and IDF solider in a way that suggests David and Goliath (I found out the most common charge against Palestinian youths is throwing rocks). Another is Gaza as a torn tapestry with Mother Palestine sewing over and repairing the rips with tatreez.

I guess the real question is: Do you think most Palestinians would appreciate an attempt at comfort, or is it better to simply grieve with them?

Thank you so much for sending this in. My personal take is the most inspiring imagery are symbols of resistance. For example, this poster is embedded in many Palestinians' minds (click) as a prime example of resistance. I love images of olives and flowers not because they're soft, but because they represent life to me. Something I also adore is Rafeef Ziadah's poem "We Teach Life, Sir" and Samah Fadil's "Then, A Palestinian was Born," as words that speak to me as core parts of Palestinian resistance.

I think you can definitely mix strength and grief, or comfort and grief together when talking about Palestine. Refaat said it best: "the most dangerous thing I have is an expo marker but if an Israeli soldier were to come to my house I would use that expo marker and throw it at them." To us, the idea that we have to resist is grief and the grief moves us to resist. I personally really love the david and golaith imagery because it reminds me of the poster below.

I guess this is all to say that you can mix them together, the grief of seeing people dying and the strength of resistance against the oppression. What's the most effective thing is portraying the truth: Israel kills and Palestine resists.

Here is the image. I highly encourage everyone to print out this poster and post it around town if you're able. Or even post it around social media if you can, and link back to palarchive so that people can see there's so much palestinian art and history that they can explore.
