SAKURAāS TOXIC LOVE
Sakuraās āloveā towards Sasuke has never been a positive thing either for Sasuke or Sakura herself. When introducing Sakura, Kishi described her as a person who pursues āselfish loveā.
čŖ°ć§ćå ćŖććµćÆć©ć®ćććŖåæć®å£°ć ęć£ć¦ć¾ćććććć«čŖååęćŖęćŖ ćććå«ćć¦ćŖć¢ć«ćŖäŗŗéććććć ć£ć¦ćććØęć£ć¦ćć¾ćć āEveryone has an inner voice in their head like Inner Sakura and I think her pursuing a selfish love is very realistic.ā
The word used here is čŖååęćŖ ęćŖ, (jibungattena koina) which means selfish/self centered/egoistic love. Itās a negative word.
Now the argument from stans would of course be that Sakura and her love āmaturedā but this is not the case and Kishi made it very clear. He was really consistent in how he drew Sakuraās confessions and Sasukeās reactions to them, and to her.
Notice how Sasuke only reacts when Sakura refers to herself. Heās amused. At first, Sakura makes sense, but the self centered person that she is, she just had to make it about herself. She could have left it at ārevenge for its own sake wonāt make you happyā but sheās not that kind of person or character. And Sasuke knows this. Since the beginning, Kishi showed Sasuke as someone who is extremely perceptive of people. He could tell multiple times that Naruto wasnāt the real Naruto but a fake, when Sakura couldnāt. He could tell Sakura was acting off while Naruto couldnāt. He could tell Naruto was changing. He knew there was something off about Kabuto even when everyone else had accepted him and trusted him. He could have cared less about all the fangirls and their shallow infatuation on him. When Sakura spoke cruelly about Naruto, Sasuke was angry. When she implied she immediately wants to give up on the bell test, Sasuke was angry. Sakuraās lack of honesty and resolve as well as her selfishness and ignorance annoy him. Her taking her family for granted annoys him, because family is everything to Sasuke, itās his character motivation. However, when Sakura starts to cry and talk about loneliness and family, he tries to comfort her calmly, telling her that they have different paths and itās time to part. But this sets Sakura off.
Not only she starts to confess her love in order to sway Sasuke, despite the fact not only he has never given her any reasons to think he returns her feelings, he has also told her that he wonāt change his path for her sake. This whole conversation has been all about Sakura being wrong, having complete lack of tact and compassion by insisting even if she has a family, Sasuke leaving her would leave her feeling just as lonely as he is, and talking about how SHE hurts. Literally how dare she? Regardless, she goes on, and makes it worse.
She not only does not try to understand Sasukeās reasons, but she completely flips on what she just said a moment ago about how revenge wonāt make Sasuke happy and shows that at the end of the day, it is not about Sasukeās well being or needs but about her and her selfish desires to have Sasuke be with her. And Sasuke knows. This is why he was amused before when Sakura added his revenge wonāt make her happy. And after her showing her true colors once again, Sasuke says this:
A direct translation would be āI knew it (yappari), you are annoying.ā But both definitely fit Sakuraās character. Itās not a coincidence both of these āI knew itā come after she makes it about herself. And Sasuke is again amused because he was right about her. That sheās insincere and selfish. Him thanking her doesnāt change this, itās simply Sasuke being kind and trying to leave on good terms.
So in part 1 Sasuke saw Sakura as a comrade, but in part 2 of the manga Sasuke and Sakura do not have a relationship at all. When Team 7 first sees Sasuke, Kishi shows Sasuke only looking at Naruto, they have direct eye contact for multiple pages, and Sasuke is constantly addressing Naruto as well. Sasuke only acknowledges Sakura by saying her name when he sees her, but not further, they do not have a conversation. In the Kage Summit arc Sasuke treats Sakura like any fodder ninja. Heās not at all surprised Sakura has come to kill him nor does he hesitate to kill her in retaliation. Again, Kishi shows only Naruto having an effect on Sasuke when he arrives to save Sakura and gets through to Sasuke.
I mentioned all this because itās important to acknowledge Sakura hasnāt gotten a real reaction out of Sasuke throughout the whole part 2, when her second confession comes.
Not only does she once again degrade herself in front of Sasuke, which to anyone possessing any emotional intelligence is not a sign of love, but she also makes it about herself again, her āplaceā in Sasukeās heart. First of all, degrading yourself to your āloved oneā is to make them feel pity or guilt. Secondly, she does not address Sasukeās reasons, or try to understand them. She talks about how things can go back to the way they were, but Sasuke doesnāt want that, he knows he used to live a lie when he didnāt know the truth. She thinks crying and asking Sasuke to think about HER would make Sasuke sway just like during her first confession. Please point out to me where is the change in the dynamic? There is none. She acts like she understands at first, but then she turns irrational, she degrades herself, she howls and cries and begs. And makes it about herself. She is still selfish. And Sasuke again acknowledges that he has always been right about her.
And what does Kishi has to say about Sakuraās āloveā after the ending? The link to the full interview is here but I will crop it because the image is so big. The part Iāll bring up is near the end (which is on left):
ććć§tćć»ć§ć ćµćÆć©ćÆćµć¹ć±äøęÆć§ Sakura is addicted to Sasuke.
Kishi uses äøęÆ to describe Sakuraās feelings/addiction.
Iām showing the details because addiction itself doesnāt even cut it how negative the word is. Is pictures of skulls and bones what youād expect when you google this word? Because itās used for general poisoning and drug addiction. If he wanted, he could have used a more light-hearted word (there are those) for addiction but he didnāt because thatās not how he sees it. Obviously, some jp fans on forums were offended too, said Sakura sounds like a crazy stalker who should be locked up in mental asylum.
And finally, Kishiās NYCC 2015 interview:
Kishimoto: Sakura⦠sheās kind of a hard woman. (laughs) Interviewer: (laughs) Thatās Sasukeās problem now. Kishimoto: (laughs) Yeah youāre right. Interviewer: (laughs) He deals with it by not being home. (everybody laughs)
Is it surprising Sasuke does not want to be around Sakura? He looks miserable and uncomfortable around her in Gaiden, while he is smiling and looks relaxed around Naruto in Boruto movie, both written by Kishi. And Sakura looks tired the whole manga and like she has resigned to her fate, she knows things arenāt completely okay but she would rather possess Sasuke in any way she can. Because her love is toxic.
feeling very like this today
i really can't imagine what it's like to call a genocide survivor "whiny" for being upset that his entire race was murdered by the state
Thereās something quite incredible that happens with Hinata stans and their constant defense of her character, over and over, they use the same two arguments to defend her, so I shall break them down:
1- āShe was disowned and/or was too young to do anythingā: While both of these statements are true, particularly on the first part when this issue is introduced, and Iām sure many anti-fans complain about her inaction, the fact that the only thing pro-fans take for āactionā is to stand against Hiashi is very telling of their bias.
Hinata taking a stand against the slavery of her clan is just as easy as showing uneasiness with the situation (something she did not, never, at any point), or by understanding Nejiās resentment. Instead, she acknowledges Nejiās anger only to quickly brush it off: paraphrasing, it will be something like āOh, youāre annoyed because youāre a slave, you should get over it because I had it rough tooā -the fact that she canonically knows the problem it presents to enslave people, yet believes it to be something to āget over withā, itās the thing weāre often pointing out.
Itās not only with Neji, the same happens with her interaction with Ko during Painās arc; he expressively tells her he will be "never forgiven" (implying that he will get a punishment) should she get injured, still, she jumps in to āsaveā Naruto (yet she does nothing in order to do that), not caring about Koās destiny at the hands of the Main Branch.
Letās add something here, Ko would have been punished non-other than Hiashi and Hanabi Hyuga, meaning that her sister, who is five years younger -eleven/twelve years old at this Arcās time- is already aware of her position and the branch family members' (lower) place, and takes immediate action over that difference: So either her [young] age has nothing to do with her (in)action on the matter, or Hinata isn't as smart as Hanabi as to understand how her clan works.
Furthermore, to claim āthey were raised differentlyā has no hold other than in fandom mentality, for they differed at the beginning simply on training:
Source
Hiashi trained Hanabi while Hinata trained with Kurenai, but that only seemed to happen after her graduation as gƫnin, for all we know, and for what is pointed out in Hanabi's entrance in the First Databook, Hinata was raised as the Hyuga heir until her first graduation when she proved to be not in the standards expected for someone her age. Even back then, Hanabi wasn't "officially" Hiashi's successor.
2- āShe was afraid of Hiashi, since he was/is her abuserā. While itās true that Hiashi downgraded her and psychologically mistreated her when constantly demoting her value and, in exchange, raising Hanabiās, there are few things to say about this:
a- Itās established in the Databook that she had a pleasant childhood, and while having carefree infancy doesn't exactly contradicts the idea of Hiashi being verbally abusive to her, it does clash with the idea of her being absolutely (that is, completely) scared of him rather than sad for the degradation.
Source
b- The relationship between Hinata and Hiashi dramatically changed during the second part of the manga (after the Chünin Exams, sheās seen smiling and bringing tea to both Hiashi and Neji), to the point where even when ādisownedā she got no Cage Bird Seal (meaning, she still was part of the main family and therefore still possessed the privileges that came with it) and how Hiashi, even when away, went out of his way to ensure her safety (such as forcing Ko to protect her). To claim that she was āstill afraidā of her father when thereās not only a single indication of her uneasiness but thereāre quite obvious displays of their good-terms relationship, itās grasping at straws to defend something that doesn't exist.
c- Itās correct to point out what she had to go through, surely having such enormous pressure on her shoulders at such young age and not being able to deliver is harsh on everyone, but pointing out her position as a victim is often done either to dismiss her implication and endorsement on her clanās slavery system and/or to downplay Nejiās own experiences with the abuse of the Main Family. Not only did he have to endure the same type (well, actually worse, since his life in itself was considered less important than anyone from the Main Family) of degradation from Hiashi, but also the threat of physical torture shall he disobey, something that Hinata canonically never was hinted to suffer from.
It could be reasonable to spare Hinata from any responsibility on the matter during the first part (I, personally, since she displayed enough knowledge about the matter and what it entailed, donāt think so), but during Shippuden -when sheās not young anymore by shinobi standards and her relationship with Hiashi is shown to be better, the arguments in her favor collapse completely.
In the real world exists a phrase often used in the feminist movement that applies perfectly here: Those who see abuse/harassment and do nothing about it might as well be endorsing it.
To simply claim āoh, well, the real villain is Hiashi because heās performing the bad deedsā without taking into account those who are in power and decide not to intervene (every single Hokage, including now Kakashi and Naruto, who changed nothing), and those who know what the system entails yet also display no discomfort/do nothing (Hinata might not have āreal powerā but she still is part of the Main Family and keeps quiet when she could easily reach to her sister and speak about her discomfort with the matter), itās simply looking at the superficial reflections of the issue -instead of taking care of the roots.
And truthfully, the fact that somehow Hiashi is the villain for enslaving his people (as Iāve said, they put the entire weight of the Hyuga clanās problems solely over his shoulders despite the existence of a political system that supports him), yet his words during the war are taken by her stans as inexorably proof of the change that apparently Hinata (alongside Neji) brought itās quite⦠striking, to say the least. More considering that he was a character already proven to lie/hide important truths from clan members before.
In addition, the Branch Family still possess the Cage Bird Seal, while the main branch doesnāt: which means that, first, thereās still a distinction between both families that goes beyond political positions inside Konoha and goes into a physical difference: ones are marked while others arenāt -and second, whether Hiashi still performs torture or not doesnāt deny the quite real possibility of him re-incurring in such behavior, the threat of physical violence still stands for the branch family. Taking care of the seal is also a task quite easy to do, should they truly want to take care of it, Iāll put here some ways to resolve it at the top of my mind:
1. Thereās no canon proof nor mention that the Cage Bird Seal canāt be removed. Neji states that the seal disappears when those with the mark die, yet, he might not know if it can truly be erased or not, since with that knowledge many branch members might seek freedom.
2. Even if we take Nejiās words as truthful, and we believe the Seal canāt be removed, thereās absolutely no evidence to state that the seal canāt be counteracted by another seal (a technique similar to the one Orochimaru used against Minatoās seal against Naruto).
3. The main family could easily get the seal so the Byakugan gets sealed when any member dies and the threat of someone torturing another member through it gets ānullifiedā.
Nothing of this is shown in the manga nor brought up by these individuals.
Source
Why is Naruto claiming this, if the Hyuga changed already? It's true that he was away for a long time, but are the changes Hiashi spoke about so little or subtle that Naruto wasn't able to see them during the duration of Shippuden? Which character are we calling a liar then, Hiashi, or Naruto?
And Iāll add this here, for good measure: Hinata might as well be endorsing it (she is, in fact, canonically endorsing it), and it will be fine from the narrativeās point of view because the manga ended with these issues not only not resolved, but accepted as the ālesser of all evilsā; the problem here are her stans trying to save her from the implications of condoning such actions -when thereās no substance for their claims.
She either agrees with the Hyuga practices or she doesnāt, in this specific case, thereās no middle, no gray areas, because even ignoring the matter (despite knowing its existence), makes her an accomplice. You can still like her and very much enjoy her, that doesnāt mean sheās free from problematic characterizations, as every single character introduced by Kishimoto.
Lord i am sorry
so the hyuuga clan really just practiced slavery out in the open and the most anyone could do was wait for some kid to come along and talk about destiny with him?? was there really nothing they could do or did hiruzen just straight up not care
the day society realizes sasuke saying "i lost" has nothing to do with who won the fight or who is more powerful between him and naruto and it actually was about him ālosingā because he finally accepted he couldn't break their bond, it'll be the day world peace will be achieved

sasuke seeking justice as a victim is not about his āhappinessā, but his inner peace. that he received acknowledgment, and some sense of justice for his family and their (as well as his own) suffering. the point isnāt that he may or may not suffer more because of it, because the village had already inflicted the most unimaginable pain on him. justice can heal. victims should not ever be silenced. especially when the argument is as weak as āthe village wonāt believe himā or will react poorly.
i think the world was a better place back when kishimoto drew naruto like a little gremlin
*headcanon - sharingan memories, madara, and izunaās eyes.
A little known canon fact is that Sharingan users who take the eyes of another Sharingan user can recall the recorded memories of the original owner. When Sasuke took Itachiās eyes, he commented that his brotherās memories wereĀ ādisgusting and sadā.
So letās think about Madara. Madara who, nearly blind, took the dying Izunaās eyesĀ on his request. Madara who didnāt merely watch his brother receive that fatal wound and die later on, but also got to see everything firsthand as Izuna saw it, who would remember everything that Izuna ever saw with those eyes for the rest of his life.
(You know he absolutely went knee-deep in everything Izuna left behind, even if it hurt him. How does it feel to relive the world through your dead brotherās eyes?)
The Sharingan never forgets. All the memories recorded by them ā the original trauma that inspired their manifestation, every battle situation that necessitated their use, every kill made with the Sharingan on⦠is remembered in perfect detail. Every. Single. Thing.
No wonder the Uchiha have a reputation for going nutty. These are killers under extreme stress and they canāt even forget the worst of their memories? Fucking hell.
On the other hand, this makes me wonder if their infamousĀ ādeep loveā is caused by this. I personally headcanon that the Uchiha record good memories (to offset the bad) and some of them use it to commit details of their loved ones. What must that be like? To remember everything about someone you love, to never forget their face, to see them so clearly that not even a lifetime will wipe their memory away? What is it like to remember them even when they are gone?
Maybe the Uchiha donāt let go, not because of sheer bloody-mindedness, but because they physically canāt.
Itās legit canon. There is no debate over this. Anyone who disagrees with this simply doesnāt pay any attention.
āWithout the faculty of forgetting, our past would weigh so heavily on our present that we should not have the strength to confront another moment, still less to live through it.Ā Life would be bearable only to frivolous natures, those in fact who do not remember.ā - Emil Cioran Itās absolutely canon and I canāt believe it isnāt explored more within the deeper parts of the narrative. Ā The Uchiha struggle with an absolutely *hellish* form of (unwanted) hyperthymesia, genetically forced to relive their worst traumas in absolute constant high-definition clarity and detail.Ā
How could Sasuke *ever* acknowledge Narutoās pleas after receiving Itachiās eyes and having to know every detail of his beloved brotherās suffering personally?Ā Madara was telling Hashirama the truth when he said āweāre no longer the sameā (Hashirama wouldāve suffered tremendously if Tobirama had died instead of Izuna, but he wouldnāt have had to be over-stimulated and traumatized day in and day out by knowing/sharing every single gruesome detail of what his brother saw, how he lived, what he experienced, and how he died; at least there was a suitable *normal* amount of separation).Ā The Sharingan doesnāt even allow for that, it makes a bond into torture. The narrative has this unspoken expectation that the Uchiha should āget over itā andĀ āmove onā but doesnāt really acknowledge the idea that they very well physically *canāt*.Ā Sometimes I feel as though the narrative is asking far too much insisting that the Uchiha just be āhappyā. I do sometimes wonder if this was done intentionally - Ashuraās path/arc seems to be based on āmoving forwardā with a focus on the future: āno matter what, [heāll] keep moving forward!ā, āmove past the painā, āwe have to entrust our wishes to the *next* generationā, whereas Indraās path/arc was heavily dominated by his (and his descendants) focus on his/their individual pasts - each of the brothers putting their focus on opposite directions - and, as in Cioranās quote, weāre aware of which brother has the more āfrivolousā nature. As a result of who they are, Indra is too focused, Ashura too oblivious. Ā
