Can’t remember the last time I cried over a book, but reading chapter 14 of Crooked Kingdom has done it. Me and Wylan are crying together, holy shit.

I feel like because Wylan was so sheltered growing up, he wouldn't realize beating your kid (verbally and/or physically) as punishment wasn't normal. Jan Van Dick would have probably told him that he was just weak for not being able to take it like every other kid. And Wylan would only find out once Jesper or somebody explained that no, parents who love their kids don't abuse them. Yes I will be writing this into a fic eventually

wylan van eck has perfect pitch, and he really tries not to be a stereotypical asshole about it. (he fails)

it’s just, when someone starts singing a song in the wrong key, he can’t help humming it to himself in the right key, just to hear it sound right.

and when two cups clinking sound like a c# he feels the unyielding need to tell jesper that “it’s a c#, the same note your favorite song starts on.”

and when nina and inej both say something at the same time and nina claims that “we harmonized!” he just has to say that he “wouldn’t call it a harmony, seeing as they were a diminished fifth apart, which sounds really terrible.”

and when jesper is fiddling around on the piano trying to plink out a song he knows, even from the other room, wylan has to call out “it’s supposed to be a g there, you keep playing an e flat. it sounds right to you because they’re a third apart but it isn’t.”

so when kaz mentions that he’s a stereotypical guy with perfect pitch, he tries to deny it, and when he’s quickly disproven he tries to stop, but he just can’t.

An evil story of how I got Crooked Kingdom spoiled for me in the stupides way possible: spoiler contained

I was on ao3, as I tend to be, and I was looking through Next to Normal fics (hoping there would be a lot more alive!gabe aus than there actually are). Suddenly, I stumbled upon a fic that has Six of Crows as a second fandom listed. Intrigued, as I had just finished Six of Crows, I look at it a bit. I’m aware of the second book that I had yet to obtain, so I’m cautious and decide to catalog the existence of the fic in my head for later. As I scroll past it and glaze over tags and such, I see a little tag towards the end. I gasp. I sit up straight. I say, out loud, “HE DIES?!” causing my friend, who was on her phone to side eye me. But that was of no concern to me, for I had just had CK spoiled for me by a “Matthias Helvar lives” tag on a NTN rewrite with SOC characters fanfic. It haunts me as I read CK, noticing the foreshadowing that I would have blissfully read, none the wiser.

Reading Crooked Kingdom and I keep forgetting that Wylan looks like a complete different person- it’s driving me insane and messing up my visual story in my head.

headcanon that wesper will just lay completely on top of each other, full bodyweight and everything. the first time nina saw jesper full-boneless-blanket onto wylan she was very concerned wylan would get squished (without moving from where he had tucked himself under wylan’s chin, jesper just mumbled “no, he likes it”, to which wylan nodded) (nina shrugged and moved on though she was still a little bewildered by it all)

i like to think that kaz is ambidextrous not for fighting in the barrel, not for sleight of hand, forgery, or lockpicking, but because jesper is left handed and used to always sit next to kaz at restaurants so that their elbows would bump together and kaz eventually got ragebaited enough to do something about it
