I’m not a big fan of edgy atheists but am a big fan of living in a society that allows people to be edgy atheists

my sewing machine does exactly one thing, and yet every single time I try to sew something with it I feel like I've put my baby in the pelican's mouth. over and over again.
sewing Machine perfec t for sewing straight l/ines! machine very Accurate and Level lines so so straight so easy to use Sewing Machine. Sew Straight Lines with Sewing Machine. no problems ever in macchine because good Shape and Whir noise for fast fast lines. Asewing Machine yes a place for making straight lines sewing lines can trust sewing machina for giveing good love to fabric. friend sewing machine
One fun thing to me about German, at least in my regional dialect, is the -ong bastardization of words that really adds a village fool twang to words
Beton -> Betong
Pardon -> Pardong
Saison -> Saisong
Karton -> Kartong
etc etc, a personal favourite: Croissant -> Crossong
I make sure to make it sound as stupid as possible because it's fun that way
[-ɔ̃ː] just sounds pretentious. you can't change my mind
Okay but teacher Grace on Erid having very little say in which kids get filtered into his class, though he is aware that the selection process is super specific and that most of the kids he gets are high performers with star academics and some even with influential parents. He isn't quite comfortable enough with Eridian culture yet to object to the selection process and make it more inclusive, however. That is, until he learns about the special needs kids.
Obviously, there are Eridian kids with special needs, and a few of them even filter into his classes. But one specific type of special needs kid has never shown up in his classes, and the only reason he even learned of the condition is because Rocky and Adrien's first pebble has the condition.
It's initially quite a struggle for them to deal with, and Grace sympathizes of course, because the child will apparently have huge learning and academic struggles and will likely never be able to live on their own. That is, until he learns the details of the disability.
Basically, it's a condition where the part of the Eridian brain that gives them their eidetic memory isn't fully developed, and so these kids just... can't remember things the way most eridians do. And in a culture where an eidetic memory is the norm, all things cater to that, so not having that is actually a massive disability.
But Grace is like, so... this kid just learns the same way a human does, or something like. Which is nothing new to him, though he is somewhat boggled at how much Rocky and Adrian struggle with their infant and their "slow" learning curve, even as far as initial developmental stages. Grace, on the other hand, simply treats the kid the same way he would a human infant, and Rocky and Adrien are impressed with his patience.
But, through this, it occurs to Grace that there must be other kids out there with this disability who likely aren't getting the attention and chances in life that they deserve, because Eridian culture is particularly hostile toward this disability, and actively views those with it as unable to function in regular society.
So Grace demands that a special course be put together where he teaches kids with this disability specifically. Rocky is hesitant, as most kids with this disability are home schooled and kind of... kept shut away. But Grace insists and as one of Erid's saviors, he gets what he wants eventually.
His first class is super small, maybe only three kids because so few parents were willing to advertise that their children have this disability. And because of the stigma around it, even those who agreed to it are super unsure and want to be present during the lessons, perhaps paranoid about the impression it will leave on Savior Grace, who is so accustomed to only teaching the most gifted students.
But Grace knows exactly how to deal with these kids. Some of them have varying degrees of function when it comes to their memory banks, which isn't so unlike teaching kids on earth. And so Grace is able to introduce all these tools and teaching techniques that were previously unheard of on Erid (though very normal on Earth) like having textbooks for reference with you at all times and having strategies that are less focused on memorization for understanding, and providing these kids with tools like calculators and teaching them the art of taking notes to look back on, etc etc.
Suddenly, with all these tools that most Eridians don't need, these kids are learning at a much faster rate, and succeeding with the help of all their little tools. And because so many normal eridians are ignorant of Grace's actual biology, it's shocking to them that Savior Grace doesn't have an eidetic memory either (shocking to everyone but Rocky anyway)--that his brain functions quite similarly in capacity to these "disabled" children.
Once this news gets around, suddenly there's more kids in his special classes, and there's all kinds of discourse being inflamed because the real reason these kids can't live on their own or function is lack of support from Eridian society.
If Savior Grace, who is well respected as a genius in his own right amongst the Eridians, can function so successfully, they why can't these kids?
I dunno, I just think it's an interesting premise.
Slow train journeys in rural England sure are an experience. You're going ten miles and it takes a day and a half because it stops at every lamp-post and the announcement says "The next station stop is Ferretley" or something and you think "I didn't know that was a place" and you get there and it isn't
Last stop was literally a picket fence, enough chopped wood to build another picket fence and, briefly, a train.
My guy Ferretby was barely builded here
Two clarifications:
Ferretby's name has been changed to protect the identities of it and its resident(s)
I specify slow trains to distinguish from the other two types of train in England: Delayed and Cancelled
honestly you can be glad that you even have a trains running to Ferretby. here in Germany the trains don't stop at Hintertupfingen any more because the line is both a national intercity route and an important international freight corridor and you can't have a slow train holding up traffic. and the branch line to Klein Kleckersdorf was closed because only 5 people used it any more (cause driving a car to the next town over takes half the time and a tenth of the money)
Everyone makes fun of rocky for saying “rocky plural” in the movie but what about grace who literally invented the word eridians calling them “Rockies”
man. for how smart he is ryland grace is sometimes kind of stupid, isn't he?
like when rocky communicates that his atmosphere (on his ship) is at 29 times the pressure of the hail mary's. grace afterwards remarks that the tensile strength of xenonite must be "off the charts" because of the straight wall holding 28 atm relative pressure.
except it's not 28! because the hail mary is pressurised to 40 kPa, not 100 kPa, and 29 times that is 1160 kPa, so we're around 11 atm difference. (which is still a lot, of course, so in conclusion he's still right.)
eva stratt makes me so fucking unwell because. imagine months of making hard call after hard call because you gotta, because someone's gotta, and this time it has to be you. and she keeps strong despite it, she keeps going. then the fucking pit in her stomach she must have felt, when she realized that Grace was her only option left. the horror of that realization. having to steel herself for the task. only to have him beg and plead and cry. her friend. how did she not throw up. how did she manage it. eva stratt the woman ever, how many people out there would have the sheer force of will, to be able to pull the trigger on their friend to save all humanity. and she didn't even know if it would work. she didn't know. for years. she didn't know if murdering her friend was worth the gamble. she just had to believe in him. fucking hell.
I will never hate her. She went in knowing she was the scapegoat. She went in knowing this would all be blame on her. She would never been seen as a hero.
And she did it anyways. Honestly I bet she did throw up. Alone, away from everyone who could see her.
the aroace read of ryland grace is so personal and haunting. "you don't even have a dog." was it not enough to love the world for the sake of living in it. was it not enough to live for the thrill of discovery. was it not enough to smile at your students. was it not enough to be afraid.
most unrealistic part of PHM is that there is no way that dr. ryland grace, PhD, would not have a flock of suitors following him everywhere he goes. that man is like catnip for academic shut-ins, alien enthusiasts, odd women, and gay people everywhere, as this site has clearly demonstrated
now I’m NOT saying he should have had a partner on earth or whatever because I do think it’s awesome that he’s (implicitly at least) aro/ace/both, but it would have been a great aside to see the cloud of yearning that follows him everywhere which he either has to deal with or has decided to be permanently ignorant of. like the comedy potential of objectively the most fuckable man any of these strange science geeks have ever met being like oh um :) thanks for the coffee and the flowers and stuff and you guys are all so nice to me it’s great to work with you all :)
the devastation he would leave in his wake. like some sort of benevolent aroace whale floating serenely through an ocean of allo heartbreak. feigning ignorance because can you guys lock in we have alien microbes to study
Book canon supports this!! Dr. Lokken is definitely crushing on him and he’s completely baffled by her behavior. All the moms want to talk to him about their kids after school. Steve the security guy starts helping him with stuff for no reason. He’s had a girl bestie since college who meets him for dinner every week, Dimitri the Russian scientist agrees to go out for drinks with him immediately after meeting him, and the entire Hail Mary prime team requests him to handle their death plans because they like and trust him more than anyone else in leadership, and he’s just very taken aback by this.
I don’t know how many of those people would have dated him, but people like him. I think he was pretty unintentionally abrasive when he was younger, argumentative and reactive, and teaching softened him up and gave him playfulness and people skills he didn’t used to have. But he didn’t actually notice the change because he’s always just been being himself. He does think of himself as being good with kids, now, but not with people generally. So he doesn’t expect people to enjoy his company and it takes him a good while to notice when they do.
Anyway the fact that Rocky loves arguing and complaining and bluntness generally is perfect for Grace. Rocky can match him not just in sweetness and sincerity and sentimentality, but in fond rudeness too, with so much joy. He’ll always tell Grace exactly what he needs from him, and thinks of him. That’s exactly the kind of guy Grace needs to spend the rest of his life with. Grace can be all of himself with Rocky.
It was nice not having to cover them in blood and soot this time
why is the project hail mary tag full of posts about shipping ryland with some guy called simon
i saw like two project hail mary posts the other day and i was like okay fuck it. i want to read that book now.
so i renewed my library card and checked out the english version from the municipal library
and then proceeded to devour the whole book in one night and one morning.
like obviously there are inaccuracies that stand out to me, like Dimitri and Ilyukhina never being referred to with either patronymics or diminutives/nicknames, despite those being pervasive in Russian. also i can't really say anything about the astrophysics or (bio)chemistry cause that's not my field of expertise at all, but i have heard that some liberties were taken there, even disregarding the concepts of astrophage and xenonite.
but also it's just a fucking good story.
I’m sad 😔 boys show shaft
