The Situation is a Lot More Nuanced Than That

In regard to Israel and Palestine:

There is no point arguing about who was there first, who the land belongs to, who deserves it. All that matters is who is there now. Israelis and Palestinians are both there, have both been there, both have a right to be there and to be safe.

Just as anyone coming to settled lands such as Canada and America deserve to be safe and protected from forces like ICE. If you are here, you deserve to be safe.

Regardless of your political afflilaton, religion, nationality, what you call yourself or the slogans you use, my belief is the same: if you are not advocating for the peaceful existence of BOTH people, both nations and a future where everyone can be safe and equal, you are advocating for genocide.

The only difference is which people's genocide you feel is acceptable.

I refuse to believe that it must be one or the other. The idea that the two nations cannot find a way forward, that bloody extermination is the only option—a JUSTIFIED option—is virulent propaganda.

The genocide you prefer is not justified. If you are part of those I call Third Wave Antizionists who casually advocate for the "Death of Israel," just know that the genocide you preach in favour of being popular opinion does not make it justifiable. The Holocaust was in favour by many Americans until Pear Harbour, although your movies have done a good job pretending otherwise.

If you succeed in the destruction of Israel and with it, the genocide of nearly half the worlds remaining Jews, this will go a long way to completing Hitler's "Final Solution."

Years from now, I am sure the movies will tell a different story about that, too.

Bleeeehhhhhhh. Egh. Beh.

I am working on remaking the film harpy website (my website for film reviews, and also it has my prose writing and also I was going to host a portfolio on it possibly). And I wanted to make the main background harpy looking woman. So I found a cool image of a woman on pexels, and an image of a bird with its wings spread that I thought would line up well and spent today photoshopping them together and making the image look cool.

And it does! I was really happy with how it turned out, it looks really great.

Except, as I was looking at it, I realized it does not look like a harpy woman. Nope. It definitely looks like an angel. Maybe a fallen or tragic angel, but an angel.

The original image of the woman had a pinkish red cast to it which I had originally carried over somewhat to the wings (which initially were white but my plan was not to keep them white). At first I had turned them a darker sortve grungy brownish with grey and a bit of pinkish red so they matched the woman but didnt just visually smoosh together.

But at some point during my various fiddling and experimenting and playing with the colours, the wings reverted to looking a lot whiter again. Not pure white, they've got kinda random colours on them... but white enough that they definitely give an angel vibe.

Even the pose the woman is in (she has her hands clasped around her throat) in this context now kinda looks like shes friggin praying.

How did this happen.

I tried to add horns but at this point i havent eaten since breakfast and I am very cold (this happens when I sit still for hours working on a project... probably cuz im not moving much? Mostly my hands and feet turn to ice blocks) so the horns look like crap.

Everything sucks. I quit.

I am going to start assuming you're asking in good faith and not writing off Jews talking about the Holocaust.

Being Jewish was the more pressing issue. The Nazis were going after Jews and Roma. The reason gay people were targeted was because the Nazis believed Jews wanted to destroy the nuclear family and had created queers to destabilize families. Does that make a lick of sense? No, but nothing about Nazism does. Queer people died because of antisemitism.

Furthermore, queer people could hide. Hiding isn't a privilege, but it did allow people to survive the Holocaust without being put in a camp. There were plenty of closeted German men who never saw a death camp because they never dated a man. Hiding being Jewish, though, was a different matter.

It does not matter how observant you were. Your ethnicity, which was Jewish, was written on your birth certificate. You were listed as Jewish in census records. That's how Nazis knew who to round up. It's why the resistance blew up records offices. There were people who converted out of Judaism who were still marked because they had Jewish blood. They still lost rights. Your best bet to avoid this was to shed your identity and move to a different town but a) it's hard to leave your family behind, b) it looked suspicious if you move suddenly, and c) no one knew how bad it would get for Jews. So people didn't shed their birth identity, and they died. It doesn't matter if they were Orthodox or fully assimilated; they were murdered for having Jewish genes.

Being Jewish was seen as a genetic disease. The Nazis wiped out whole families because everyone has Jewish DNA. Meanwhile, being queer was a moral failing. If you were caught with another man, your wife and children weren't going to the camps. Just you.

Ultimately, the deaths of queers was a side project. It was a fun little detour, rounding up people who might destabilize Germany, but it wasn't the goal. And to make that point, please consult this graph:

I don't know how to do an image ID for graphs. But the graph shows the Jewish death toll at 6 million, non-Jewish Polish death toll at 3 million, disabled and Romani deaths at least than a million each, and gay arrests are barely visible. There are no exact numbers given.

Okay, I will admit that I am not as well-educated as I could be on the stories of individual Holocaust victims and survivors, so I can't speak about Molly Applebaum, Margot Heuman, and Gad Beck, but including Anne Frank there is a perfect demonstration of how disingenuous that original post is

Anne Frank was not persecuted for being Queer. She was persecuted - and murdered - for being Jewish

Anne Frank, by today's standards, may well be considered Queer, to the delight of everyone who thinks discussions of the Holocaust are a matter of representation, but she never got to determine that, because

Anne Frank was murdered for being Jewish

You could, if you don't think a child being murdered for being Jewish is tragic enough, argue that it's a tragedy that she never got to fully explore that part of herself, but that's about as far as you can go.

And this is in fact exactly what the tags in the screenshot seem to be talking about - Anne Frank did not talk about being persecuted for being Queer because being Jewish was the more pressing issue.

The book summary in the original post does not explicitly make the claim that Anne Frank was murdered for being Queer, but the wording (such as "the hidden history of Queerness in a time of genocide") certainly carries that suggestion, and that suggestion is an ahistorical one.

since the previous reblog is from me and I take significant issue with it I wanted to provide some context.

Anna Hajkova, the author of the book (though not necessarily the pull quote) is herself a Jewish scholar of queer history of the Holocaust. She is descended from survivors and from Righteous Among the Nations. The book specifically covers Jewish queer victims/survivors of the Holocaust, and as a Jewish queer person I do in fact think it is not unreasonable to assume that discrimination on the basis of queerness was an issue within the Jewish community of survivors. In fact the addition from a Jewish blogger on the post on which the tags appear even agrees with this premise: queer Jewish prisoners of death camps and concentration camps kept quiet because of worse treatment from both guards and inmates (emphasis mine).

That doesn't mean Hajkova's scholarship is above criticism (here's a worthwhile article on that) but studying queerness among people who were targeted for genocide in the Holocaust because they were Jewish is in fact a valid pursuit and I find it reactionary and anti-intellectual to say otherwise.

At the same time, I think OP calling the screenshotted tags a "hate comment" is insensitive and ignorant. There is a queer history of the Holocaust, and I actually think focusing specifically on queer Jewish people (vs. trying to make the Holocaust about non-Jewish and non-Romani queer people) is commendable! but when you are talking about Queer Jewish history regarding the Holocaust, Jewish is, as the tags indicate, by far the bigger issue and so if you are focusing on the queer aspect you do need to be particularly careful in what you center, especially since there is such a long and painful history of non-Jewish/non-Romani people appropriating the Holocaust. (I should note: I do not know if OP is Jewish. I think if they are then this is an even more complicated conversation, but either way I think those tags are completely appropriate). This is an issue of intersectionality and it was handled extremely poorly. But that is the problem; not the book itself nor the exploration of queerness among Jewish survivors.

To be clear, my issue is not at all the book. The book sounds great and the exploration of the intersection of Jewishness and queerness is great. As a queer Jew myself I am likely going to check out this book, it sounds excellent.

My issue is with OP and their specific comment. Because it does not sound as if they are approaching this from a lense of intersectionality (and based on other notes this account seems to have a history of antisemetic behaviour likely in the same "co-opting the Holocaust" vein, but I cannot verify that for myself).

Had they said something about life for those who were queer and Jewish during the Holocaust, or discussed the way queer Jewish Holocaust survivors faced ostracization from their own community I would not have taken issue with it. If theyd just given a summary of the book without their own commentary that would have been fine too.

I will admit, I am sensitive about the way gentiles talk about the Holocaust. I have seen one too many "actually *my demographic* was the first to be targeted by the Nazis and people dont talk about it!" Or "everyone just thinks the Holocaust was about Jews but we need to focus on these other groups just as much!" (Like, im sorry are we taking up space in this conversation? And these types of declarations never seem to be happening in good faith to just genuinely raise awareness about the Romani and Sinti, either).

There is something that has always bothered me about Nightmare Before Christmas (aside from the fact that is a children's movie where the plot is 'midlife crisis of adult man') and it is its maintenance of status quo. There is a read of the film where Jack's curiosity and interest in Christmas (his oddness) is punished and put back in its proper place.

Growing up with Burton was fun, but I'm glad we have culturally outgrown his storytelling and direction.

While that is a completely valid read of Nightmare before Christmas I always think of it like a guy has stopped appreciating what he has and seeing the beauty in the everyday simply because it IS his everyday. He's forgotten why he IS the pumpkin king and he takes for granted all the great stuff all around him and all the people who love and care about him.

And then he discovers this shiny NEW thing and gets all hyped about it and tries to force it on everyone even though it's not his thing and he doesn't actually take the time to understand the culture of the new world he found or what makes it special either, he's just using it as a distraction from his problems (it is very much a midlife crisis).

At the end of the film, he realizes he was taking his life for granted and more importantly he was taking PEOPLE for granted. Sally and everyone in Halloweentown who love and care for him and it makes him feel loved and understood and reignites his passion.

And the great thing about this movie is that Tim Burton had fuck all to do with it, so this is in no way praise for him.

He didnt write the script. He didn't direct it. He didn't even ADAPT it. He did produce it, and he wrote the poem its based on (which is basically little more than a parody of "the night before Christmas," and mostly covers the part of the film where Jack fucks Christmas up and is nearly killed for it. Except he doesnt realize he loves Halloween, Santa just shows up and is like "you meant well, do not fucking do that again.")

It was directed by Henry Selick (Coraline, Wendell and Wilde). The Screenplay is by Caroline Thompson (Addams Family, Corpse Bride). It was adapted by Michael McDowell (Beetlejuice).

Tim Burton produced and probably designed the characters? But I am not certain.

Regardless, this is not his story. Now don't get me wrong, I think a lot of his earlier films are fantastic so it's not like the man never had talent, just somewhere along the way he started doing a parody of himself instead of like... telling stories about characters.

I just think we need to clear up what his actual involvement in Nightmare was, because he has mislead people for too long. "Tim Burtons Nightmare Before Christmas." You sir are a liar and a charlatan.

I'm from a community where we are strongly encouraged to get genetic testing before we make any decisions about having children.

This is because so many of us are carriers for tay-sachs, aka the incurable neurodegenerative disease that kills before age four.

I would also point out that requiring someone to have an acceptable reason for their abortion means that you are requiring them to disclose the reason for their abortion, no matter how personal and painful it is.

This is an interesting conversation to have because yes I am pro choice but I am anti eugenics. But the reason for someone's abortion is truly not my business and they do not and should not have to disclose it. Particularly not to me, who is like, just some rando. So what is or isn't there reasoning should never really be up for me to weigh in on in the first place.

If were speaking hypothetically, I am sure there are many justifiable reasons for getting an abortion in scenarios such as those discussed above... but also, if for some reason a person has decided to disclose their reason for getting an abortion to me, of their own free will, and it's something like, "genetic tests revealed my kid might have autism and I didnt want an autistic kid," quite frankly I dont think I need to be supportative of that statement. They fully did not need to tell me. This was not my business. Perhaps the situation is far more nuanced than I understand but it is certainly a very heavy and complex thing to expect someone else to reconcile and I wouldn't really know what they even wanted from me.

Pro choice means I support everyone's right to choose. But I dont think you can demand everyone understand and accept every reason. We shouldn't have to. People not wanting girls because society hates women is like, really shitty. That would be an awful thing to hear—but hey, that's their choice. I will defend their right to make it and I dont expect them to justify or explain.

But if they choose to explain, I cannot guarantee my opinions. I dont think thats unreasonable.

Theres a new show on Prime called Ride or Die staring Hannah Waddingham as an international assassin who has been lying to her best friend Octavia Spencer for 20 years and saying shes an accountant, but now Octavia Spencer is caught up in assassin stuff and they have to go on the run and it's delightful so far and I love Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham and if it gets cancelled after 1 damn season I will be heartbroken so you all need to start watching it.

This is true but I'm gonna be controversial for a second and say that I feel bad for jocks who get hit with The Injury™️too. The Injury™️ fucking sucks, man. Having something that everyone praised you for when you were young suddenly betray you and having to grapple with both a sudden loss of ability (whether it's something that can be recovered from or not) and figure out what your future looks like now that the one you had imagined for yourself (whether it was actually realistic or not) feels like it's been snatched away is brutal.

Forever baffled by the fact that Tim Burton is still thought of as a defender of oddness. He treats monsters as things to be gawked at, to be drawn and imagined, then put away in a safe little box. He doesn't love monsters, he loves freak shows.

He thinks he loves monsters so long as the monsters are coded as conventionally attractive skinny white people.

There is something that has always bothered me about Nightmare Before Christmas (aside from the fact that is a children's movie where the plot is 'midlife crisis of adult man') and it is its maintenance of status quo. There is a read of the film where Jack's curiosity and interest in Christmas (his oddness) is punished and put back in its proper place.

Growing up with Burton was fun, but I'm glad we have culturally outgrown his storytelling and direction.

While that is a completely valid read of Nightmare before Christmas I always think of it like a guy has stopped appreciating what he has and seeing the beauty in the everyday simply because it IS his everyday. He's forgotten why he IS the pumpkin king and he takes for granted all the great stuff all around him and all the people who love and care about him.

And then he discovers this shiny NEW thing and gets all hyped about it and tries to force it on everyone even though it's not his thing and he doesn't actually take the time to understand the culture of the new world he found or what makes it special either, he's just using it as a distraction from his problems (it is very much a midlife crisis).

At the end of the film, he realizes he was taking his life for granted and more importantly he was taking PEOPLE for granted. Sally and everyone in Halloweentown who love and care for him and it makes him feel loved and understood and reignites his passion.

And the great thing about this movie is that Tim Burton had fuck all to do with it, so this is in no way praise for him.

He didnt write the script. He didn't direct it. He didn't even ADAPT it. He did produce it, and he wrote the poem its based on (which is basically little more than a parody of "the night before Christmas," and mostly covers the part of the film where Jack fucks Christmas up and is nearly killed for it. Except he doesnt realize he loves Halloween, Santa just shows up and is like "you meant well, do not fucking do that again.")

It was directed by Henry Selick (Coraline, Wendell and Wilde). The Screenplay is by Caroline Thompson (Addams Family, Corpse Bride). It was adapted by Michael McDowell (Beetlejuice).

Tim Burton produced and probably designed the characters? But I am not certain.

Regardless, this is not his story. Now don't get me wrong, I think a lot of his earlier films are fantastic so it's not like the man never had talent, just somewhere along the way he started doing a parody of himself instead of like... telling stories about characters.

I just think we need to clear up what his actual involvement in Nightmare was, because he has mislead people for too long. "Tim Burtons Nightmare Before Christmas." You sir are a liar and a charlatan.

poster from Spain that definitely should have gotten more criticism as one of the most egregious examples of modern day blood libel. I don’t know what’s worse, the mobile above the crib with bombs dangling from the Magen David, or the Nazi style armband with the Israeli flag on the Grim Reaper. the fact that these types of posters have made such a comeback with zero pushback or sense of recognition that they’re echoing literal Nazi and Soviet genocidal antisemitic imagery/propaganda is surreal to witness.

Something that literally changed my life was working with a friend on a coding thing. He was helping me create an auto rig script and was trying to explain something to me but his words were just turning into static in my brain. I was tired and confused and there was so many new concepts happening.

I could feel myself working toward a crying meltdown and was getting preemptively ashamed of what was about to happen when he said, “Hey, are you someone who benefits from breaks?”

It broke me.

Did I benefit from breaks? I didn’t know. I’d never taken them.

When a problem frustrated or upset me I just gritted my teeth and plowed through the emotional distress because eventually if you batter and flail at something long enough you figure it out. So what if you get bruised on the way.

I viscerally remembered in that moment being forced to sit at the table late into the night with my dad screaming at me, trying to understand math. I remembered taking that with me into adulthood and having breakdowns every week trying to understand coding. I could have taken a break? Would it help? I didn’t know! I’d never taken one!

“Yes,” I told him. We paused our call. I ate lunch. I focused on other stuff for half an hour. I came back in a significantly better state of mind, and the thing he’d been trying to explain had been gently cooking in the back of my head and seemed easier to understand.

Now when I find myself gritting my teeth at problems I can hear his gentle voice asking if I benefit from breaks. Yes, dear god, yes why did I never get taught breaks? Why was the only way I knew to keep suffering until something worked?

I was relating to this same friend recently my roadtrip to the redwoods with my wife. “We stopped every hour or so to get out and stretch our legs and switch drivers. It was really nice. When I was a kid we’d just drive twelve hours straight and not stop for anything, just gas. We’d eat in the car and power through.”

He gave a wry smile, immediately connecting the mindset of my parents on a road trip to what they’d instilled in me about brute forcing through discomfort. “Do you benefit from breaks?” he echoed, drawing my attention to it, making me smile with the same sad acknowledgement.

Take breaks. You’re allowed. You don’t have to slam into problems over and over and over, let yourself rest. It will get easier. Take. Breaks.

my first boss had a bit he liked to use on people, he'd go, "why do you have brakes on your car?" and of course you'd be like uhhhh what well I guess so you can slow down? and then he'd got you, he'd say no. the brakes are there so you can go faster. imagine driving without brakes! you'd have to move at .1 miles per hour all the time because otherwise if you ever ran into an obstacle you'd die. and this is the same thing (my boss would say) as taking breaks while you are working. if you don't take breaks, you can't move at all.
