DRAGONS OF THE FORGE
WIP Introduction
—- GENRE: YA Steampunk Fantasy
—- POV: third person omniscient (or maybe limited, undecided)
—-STATUS: Initial idea stages, outlining
—- SETTING: Late 1700s early 1800s. In a world that relies heavily on dragon labour, in a city ruled by a dictator. This world features many different types/kinds/forms of dragons, most of which have been put to work by humans in one way or another and domesticated. A few types are kept as pets.
—- FEATURES: LGBTQ+ and diverse cast, deaf main character, a blind dragon, an ADHD main character, a nonbinary main character, dragons and people living happily with prosthetics, LOTS OF UNIQUE DRAGONS, as well as found family, clash of ideologies, corruption, romance, power and prejudice, survival, exploration, tinkering, metalurgy, and more.
This wip is still in its initial stages, but here’s some of what I have now:
A blind dragon who uses echolocation to get around ends up befriending a deaf boy, who is the only one who isn’t bothered by the dragon’s constant clicking sounds.
An ADHD girl can’t get a little fairy dragon to leave her alone– but eventually the dragon tries to help keep her focused instead of being the distraction.
A hydrophobic nonbinary person, eventually, relearns to love the sea after a sea serpent dragon with a missing limb shows them that the ocean isn’t to be feared. The dragon ends up getting a prosthetic limb.
There are also little “rat like” dragons that skitter around in alleyways and eat garbage and aren’t usually intelligent but are common, and seen as dirty and dumb by most
And cute little fluffy dragons that are kept as pets!
There’s an underground secret society that is furthering the use of technology and learning more about what tech they have and what is possible to make. This is against the law.
They’re making many devices that would help various disabled people and dragons, as well as many useful and interesting gadgets.
Our deaf MC finds them, and joins them. He learns mechanics and becomes a tinkerer (which is again, illegal).
Then, the dictator enacts a law that all injured, disabled, or otherwise “not useful” dragons are to be hunted down and killed, while all others are to be bred–except it will likely end up being in cramped, terrible conditions for cost efficiency.Â
So now our main characters have to figure out how to stop the law from coming to fruition, or being enforced, all while trying to not get arrested or have their dragons taken away and killed.
I likely won’t be posting an actual writing of this soon, but maybe more concepts/ideas. Eventually some proper character introductions, and maybe just maybe if I do a dragon sketch based on this wip I think is good enough, I’ll post it. Let me know if you want to be added to the taglist!
Taglist: @ink-flavored :) (cause of that ask) and @quilloftheclouds (because I know you’re just going to ask to be on this taglist immediately anyway, lol)
Heck, you just needed to say multiple types of dragons to get my interest. Everything else icing. (I may love dragons too much.)
i see a lot of valid posts about loving your friends’ OCs butÂ
man you ever just look at one of your own characters and it’s like
when you have a cast of 5+ main characters that’re always together in your story and they’re always talking over each other at the same time
Friend: So how’s that book that you’ve been writing going?
Me: (Hasn’t done anything for WIP in a century and feels guilty)
This is a little too accurate.
When you’re editing and you find a genius piece of foreshadowing mixed in, but you didn’t realize it was foreshadowing when you first wrote it.
How to podfic
This is just a brief outline based on my own experiences. Feel free to add in any advice, tools, or suggestions. And, just in case you don’t know what a podfic is, it’s an audiobook version of fanfiction.
1. I want to record but I don’t have recording equipment
You can record an audio file on your phone or use free audio recording software Audacity. I’ve used both, but these days I prefer audacity because I find it easier to remove my flubs and rerecord without having to start at the start.Â
2. Where can I host my files? AO3 doesn’t do hosting
I got myself a free soundcloud account. There are other audio hosting services out there. Find the one you like the best.Â
3. How do I post it so people can find it on AO3?
Once you have the file hosted on, for example, soundcloud you can click on “share” and then “embed”. Copy the embed code and paste it into your fic on AO3. Make sure you’re in html editing mode at the time.
If you have the mp3 file hosted elsewhere (I’ve recorded mp3s on my phone and hosted them on google drive, for instance), you can use the native audio player available in AO3. Here’s how.
4. How do I tag it?
Add the tag #podfic to your fic. You can post the podfic on its own, or you can post it together with the fic text. I just started a new story last night and I’m going to podfic each chapter as I post and embed the player at the top of the chapter.Â
There are more specific tags as well that mention how long the podfic is. If you enter “podfic” into the additional tags section on AO3, the others will pop up.Â
5. I don’t want to record it myself, but I’m happy if someone else wants to
Use the tag #podfic welcome. This will allow people who record podfic to know that you’re open to it. You can also add a statement to your AO3 profile that lets podficcers know that they have your permission to record. You can see an example of this on my profile. This is not the only way to do this, but it gives you an idea of the type of things you can say. Â
I need to print this out and keep it where I can see it whenever I’m about to pay for stuff…
tfw some of your characters have detailed descriptions, beautifully worded, and others have shit like, “he was tall. brown hair. had a face.”
Yeah, he had a face, but then he ran into Ko the face-stealer and well, the rest speaks for itself.
AO3 Search Modes
1. Newbie Find fandom on AO3. Skim down the most recent fics in the fandom. Downside: Overwhelming, much chaff.
2. Old School Go to specific fandom. Sort by kudos. Start at the top. Downside: Oldest fics tend to have the most kudos, also things that update a lot or crossover with more popular fandoms. Newer stuff gets lost.
3. Rebel Go to specific fandom. Sort by kudos. Start at the end. (Note: some actual gems can be found this way, but it requires much patience.)
4. Ravenous Go to specific fandom. Read everything. Not recommended for Very Large Fandoms. Can be done with newer, smaller fandoms. Downside: lots of mediocre fic in many fandoms.
5. Specialist Go to specific fandom. Search for a specific pairing. Exclude every pairing you don’t like. Exclude keywords that you dislike. Exclude all crossovers in general or specific crossovers if your fandom has a natural crossover (i.e. Doctor Who/Torchwood, Stargate SG1/Atlantis). Sort by bookmarks. Downsides: you miss some newer good stuff, but starting from the top the first chunk of fics are likely to be very good and exactly what you want.
6. Goblin Click on a tag you like in a fic you just read. Go to the exclude section and start eliminating fandoms you’re not interested in, saying in a squeaky goblin voice, “Not you! Not you! Not you!”. Filter. Repeat until the top fandoms are all things you like and there are no more than a handful of fics in other fandoms represented. Back up when AO3 balks. It takes a while, so if you’re in Very Large Fandoms, this is a great method, and if you like obscure fandoms, not so much. Exclude pairings and tags you don’t like. Eliminate all unfinished fic. Sort by bookmarks. Start reading. Downside: Periodically get thrown by a random fandom you’re not in showing up anyway. Get jarred by switching fandoms constantly. Upside: Variety of really good fics that people liked enough to bookmark. What’s your method?
When your plot starts plotting against you:
It’s holding me hostage and won’t let go.
I was once writing on FC, and half way through I came to this bit of dialogue... Greyson said. “But he killed Greyson!”
Which made me realize I had accidentally turned Luther’s name into his son’s name for the past thirty pages and anyone who had been reading along would have been incredibly confused.
Returning to an old WIP or OC you haven’t written for in a while is like reuniting with a very old and dear friend that you haven’t seen in forever, but you can talk to without skipping a beat.
Except you forget everyone’s names repeatedly while writing.
