So, for anyone who is a bit confused; Wiglett here is based off of a very common thing in the real world: Convergent Evolution.

Basically, that means "Two totally unrelated creatures happen to develop to look very similar due to habitat or behavior."

A simple example is Sharks and Dolphins. They aren't drastically related, but they look quite similar.

You can also see it in Placental Mammals and Marsupials.

They aren't closely related, but they developed to look the same.

So basically, Wiglett is totally different Pokemon that developed to look like Diglett.

(I apologize if I'm messing up the term. I had a concept of it, but it's always been hard for me to totally understand.)
