Sweet treats are not the reason for Easter, but the look on Ava’s face when finding the basket “Peter Cottontail” left her… perfect. Having said that, she’s had limited candy experience. Her un-fun Dad prefers she indulge in what he makes for her, maybe the occasional ice cream or popsicle. All this sugar added up to one jacked up kid, running about the lawns and fruit trees of her grandparents huge garden. Last night’s installment in the atmospheric river parade has us at 18 hours without power, an 8:00PM guesstimate to when it might be restored. But, we had gas and water, good for thick coffee, jammy eggs and steel cut oats before Ava was off to school! So it’ll be a day playing with all those things stashed in the freezer: chicken bones(stock), extra dough(galette), egg whites(meringue cookies), salmon(rillette), etc. With all that people are enduring around the country, the globe, we have it pretty damn good. Having seen NONE of the films, Sunday night’s Oscars was about the food! Specifically racks of ribs thick with ginger, honey and soy, dipping pots of fish sauce, lime and cilantro, coconut rice + a “slaw” full of roasted peanuts, rice vinegar and sesame oil. Autumn comes in slowly to the Bay Area, but moves on quickly. The sun from the week before that was meant to be right there wasn’t, having already set.
