As someone with quite shaky hands and not as much mobility in them as our peers, these small bastards are the bane of our existence. And it's all done only to serve our capitalist overlords. Truly awful.

As to the pill bottle thing, we don't like it either, but we also understand that kids and animals should have a harder time getting into them. Then again you could just keep them out of reach, like in a closed box under the bed or especially on a high enough shelf. Then again more accessible bottles would open doors to many, many lawsuits when a pet or a kid eats the whole thing by mistake. So this one is a tad trickier to solve.

My pharmacy has solved it very simply. The lid is two sided. One side is the child proof side and the other is the screw top. It also has a sticker that reads “not child proof.”

It’s always worth asking your pharmacy if they have arthritis friendly options.

For bottles that don’t do that, you can get a special tool. I bought it under the name:

Ezy Dose Vial Cap Remover

Here is a picture of it. The end has a blunt hook that goes under the cap, between the outside child proof cap and the inner sealing cap. You carefully pull the handle down to separate them. Think of opening a beer can. The outer cap pops off, and you are left with the inner cap that only needs to be screwed on.

It takes a while to get the technique right. Brute force doesn’t work well. I’ve successfully taken the child proof cap off of many bottles. The only type this doesn’t work on is one where the outer cap hangs lower and has bumps preventing the inner cap from being separated.

when people tag posts "unreality" it's a signal to people who struggle with discerning reality that a (likely scary if believed to be true) post is not real even though it's written as if it was. it's also a filter tag so those people can opt out of seeing posts like that entirely. many people who rely on the unreality tag are psychotic and struggle with paranoia alongside (or because of) the struggles discerning what's real. posts that these people interpret to be real can lead to incredible distress and compulsions.

when someone tags your post "#unreality" and you screenshot the tags and say "what are you talking about? this is real" because you consider the post easy to discern as not real and find this joke funny you're actually just causing paranoia for people who now feel like they can't trust the unreality tag. not everyone has the same reality discernment skills as you. what's "obviously" a fictional story to you may not be obvious to other people.

I don't think most people make this joke maliciously. I think most people making this joke don't even realize why the unreality tag exists. anyways, if you've made this joke or have the urge to make this joke then consider not doing that.

I enjoy a lot of things in the #unreality tag, specifically because that tag being there puts it into a "this is a story, fiction, joke, what if thought experiment" section of my brain and I'm able to enjoy it as such. I'm only able to enjoy those because that tag is there telling me explicitly that the post is make-believe, even when the post is taking itself seriously and people are playing along.

I like playing along as well, as long as it's clear that everyone is in on the joke and we're playing. I am also susceptible to some of the paranoia feelings and need to avoid certain things because of that, but the tag helps me filter things.

the school I go to sometimes locks the bathrooms during class and says "you can only go between classes" but they set up the classes so that there's exactly enough time to get to class between classes. Like 5 minutes.

Also seems ableist because some kids have IBS or other digestive system issues and need to go often. Some kids may have kidney issues and may have issues that can result from holding it in for too long. not sure if i should count this as? ableism?

i have pretty chronic fatigue that's been worsening since i was ~12 and currently use a cane to partly manage weakness relating to it, and during my last psychiatry session i suggested ambulatory wheelchair use because of how much fatigue has an effect on me. my psychiatrist then proceeded to hit me with the "oh but that's like such a major decision, and it's limiting, so maybe we should reconsider?" something along those lines. didn't ask to hear me explain why or bother to discuss it with me, other than to tell me that it's something i shouldn't consider.

i dunno. it's just been nagging at me because i already have some pretty strong internalised ableism, and it makes me feel like i really am taking things too far?

I'll use my own personal experience here as an example. I don't use a wheelchair or cane, but I do currently have a back/abdominal brace and probably need a posture corrector for my shoulders and/or a body braid.

If I'm having a really good day and don't need my brace, I'm literally not even thinking about it! If I find myself thinking "I wonder if putting on my brace would help with what I'm feeling" it's more likely than not that I need to put on my brace!

This is not 100 percent of the time, but I've also found that most of the time if my brace feels uncomfortable even after I've adjusted all the things and tried to settle into it for a bit, then it's probably not helping much at that time and I take it off. (This is not surefire because I also have sensory issues, and so sometimes the brace is helping bodily even though it's uncomfortable for sensory reasons.)

Along those lines of thinking, I really should get the upper back support and a body braid because I frequently wonder if those would help me as well (like today 😅 [Plaintext: grinning face with sweat emoji /End P.T.] I think the posture upper back support would be useful)

In other words, people who don't need wheelchairs don't really spend a lot of time seriously wanting them and thinking about how they would be helpful more than hindering. -R.

Idk if I can use this blog for that, but is there a way to make cryptographed text (text thats supposed to be obscured by a cipher) accessible to blind people but STILL cryptographed? Keep in mind that morse code and binary are not the only cryptography thingies.

And it’s always “inclusive” queer spaces that claim to be accessible when they aren’t. It’s like they realise that not being accessible to disabled people is bad, but instead of doing the work to be accessible they just look for ways around having to admit that they aren’t. They’re just prioritising their ability to think of themselves as “radical” or “inclusive” over actually including wheelchair users.

It’s almost always queer spaces that take “ambulatory wheelchair users exist!” to mean that a venue with a step (or even multiple steps) is wheelchair accessible because the wheelchair user can just get up while someone lifts their (small, manual) wheelchair up the step.

Or, even worse (like the “inclusive” salon my friend wanted to go to) they call a space with absolutely no wheelchair access “accessible” because they have fidget toys.

Inclusive and Accessible can mean different things! I would say having fidget toys is a step towards inclusive, but A.D.A. Accessible is a very specific set of guidelines! And if the place just has fidget toys but hasn't taken any other steps toward making the place safe for people with other common sensory issues (like having earplugs and dimmable lights) then it feels highly performative and even belittling to just have some toys and call it Inclusive, much less Accessible.

Also! I have depth perception issues and can trip easily especially on unmarked steps, so I highly prefer wheelchair accessible and step-free places because that means they will be accessible to me too.

recently went to a baseball game and they had a sensory section! It had two quiet rooms where you could adjust the lights to your desire, fun textures on the walls, comfy cushions/seats, a room with a large window so you can still watch the game without the noise, and it was even on the same floor as the suites so outside you get to sit in a comfy seat away from the crowd! It made the game way more bearable, and even fun, to watch!

The only real feedback we have is the door to the seats could use a push/pull sign and something to let ppl know food/beverages are only allowed in the seating area would’ve been helpful. 10/10 baseball field would go again

Captions cover the spot on the screen you put the information I need

The dialogue is captioned but not the song you have playing that the dialogue is responding to

You only captioned the person on the screen, not the person off screen who is also talking

No captioning of critical sound effects (alarms, bells, dogs barking, etc)

Speakers are not labelled at moments where it is not clear on the screen who is talking.

Captions cover the spot on the screen that you put the information I need!
