This blog is for celebrating Accessibility, as well as recognizing Inaccessibility & talking about ideas for how to make things Accessible! This blog is inspired by others such as @this-is , @this-is-solidarity , @this-is-ableism , @this-is-positive-masculinity , @this-is-classism , @this-is-anti-homeless and many many more.

I am hoping to keep this space largely positive, with ideas for improving designs even when things submitted are inaccessible!

Asks and submissions are welcome, with or without a photo of what you're referring to if it's a physical thing, issue, or accommodation. I am personally anticipating that this blog will have a lot of photo examples as I plan to add them if there aren't any in the submissions.

I am still learning things myself (and I hope to always be learning!) so if something I post needs correction or more information, please add it and/or let me know!

About me: My pronouns are zie/zem/zir/zeir, I am a Queer, Autistic, dissociative system, with invisible physical disabilities, who is an Adult living in the US.

Me: "Damn people are REALLY BAD at knowing when to tag their eyestrain art/images...either that or they just don't care about photosenitive epileptic people like me. I feel really sad now." Person: "But Allison, what if they just don't know or understand what qualifies as eyestrain and what doesn't?" Me: "You know what? That could be a factor...While it is always better to be safe rather than sorry (so YES people should always tag eyestrain even if they're unsure if it "counts" or not) maybe you've got a point?"

How to make yourself inaccessible when you want a maybe disabled person to be inside your life by refusing to repeat yourself, after a person missed your attempt to connect like a billion times, like how do you not realize that's probably a problem and just change tact. Some poeple don't catch things the first time. Infuriating. Just repeat yourself. Most my co workers do when they think I miss something. Why do I have to explain this to people.

This is Inaccessibility and Ableism.

It's really unfortunate how many people are unwilling to repeat themselves or allow processing time. So many people need that for so many different reasons!

I don’t know if this exactly counts but my highschool is on the smaller side, however I’ve seen probably about five? People around school who use a cane and it brings me joy that they were able to get those aids even with a lot a stigma around younger cane users and the ableist idea that only those who are older need or use them being common where I live

I love the normalizing of aids! I am so happy for them and for other people being able to see them and know they can ask for help and accommodations as well.

My school is replacing all the broken accessible doors and trying to add in another building! the operations department has been fighting with both the historical building society and the rest of our school about it, but they finally got approval and after 7 years of trying to fix the doors, i can get through the school without help again soon!

I've gotten so many submissions about schools advocating for their students, it has been so nice to see 😊

My principal actually listening to issues with accessibility at the school and trying to help! Our old principal was as useful as a carrot, new one who I’m talking about actually makes time to listen to stuco and try to help, bathrooms were wet bc of pipes leaking (Issue in general but especially in the disabled bathrooms), making sure there’s accessible options for disabled kids at the recently established hallway, and trying to fix the broken door open buttons in the 500 and cafeteria!

This is an administrator advocating for Accessibility!

That is really awesome that they are providing that support and enforcement of codes.

my school has a specific room for "quiet lunch", and it's available to anyone, so even if you don't have accommodations or aren't diagnosed, you can still go and don't have to deal with the loud cafeteria

I always love when a low stimulus environment is provided for anyone. Sometimes people are just overwhelmed and need a quiet space, no matter their diagnoses or lack thereof.

I saw a youtube short the other day of an accessible bathroom, I think in South Korea? It had handrails by the sink specifically! It's not something I've ever seen, but I honestly think it's a great idea - I tend to get dizzy right after standing, sometimes with a bit of delay, which means I often end up collapsing onto the sink at least a little. Having hand rails there, especially allowing me to avoid touching my aids with gross bathroom hands ans having to clean and dry them after, is something I never considered. But now I want to see it in every accessible bathroom! I'm sure there are plenty of other folks who would also benefit so much from something like that!

Hello! I am having trouble feeding myself and I am wondering how other people help themself with that? I am mostly asking in regards of storing and using recipes or ideas and how to manage fluctuating safe foods aka the "I can eat nothing I have I and everything that worked last week just suddenly stopped working" . easiest and most obvious solution to me is to just have two buttons and have them clearly labeled

Clearly labeling things is accessibility!

The issue with the button top toilets like in the picture is the finger and knuckle joint strength and dexterity needed to press those buttons so deeply.

Perhaps two clearly labeled handles? Or any of the other ideas that were submitted in the comments of that post😁

And different people will have different needs! But there should be options, and those particular buttons feel like one of the more inaccessible ones.

Accessibility is my college not allowing the use of anything deemed inaccessible for blind/visually impaired students (if only because they were sued twice by an organization for the blind- that’s usually what it takes)

The fact they had to get sued first sucks tho and doesn't paint them in a good light. Good for those people for standing up to them!
