âIs that blood? Is that YOUR blood?â
âItâs not mine.â
âIs there a reason youâve been following me for an hour?â {--doesmandecide}
Horatio gave his best innocently playful expression and shrugged. âI havenât been following you.â

Michael covered his mouth, more than a bit nervous about the revelation. âYou drowned people? How did that happen?â As much as the confession made him concerned, he was willing to give Horatio a chance to explain.
Horatio fixed a mischievous, albeit creepy grin on his new friend.Â
âIt was a joke.âÂ

âI guess. Most folks donât believe what they canât see. Unless itâs got to do with faith.â Michael grew sad, feeling bad for Horatio. He knew what it was like to have people make assumptions about himself. âIt sucks, man. All you can do is show people youâre not like what they think and most folksâll see that. Sometimes you can even change their mind when they see not everybodyâs like what they think.â
âI donât wanna hurt anyone, or drown anybody. Iâve never drowned anyone!â Horatio paused, then added in a lower voice, âIntentionally.â He let out a short, frustrated breath, hand on his hip. âPeople can be pretty dumb.âÂ

âIâve never seen such serenity.â (doesmandecide)
âYouâre welcome.â
Adam managed - not without a brief grin - to surpress his laughter. His new acquaintance was either very confident, or did not quite know what âserenityâ meant. And Adam had no wish to be cruel should it prove to be the latter. âThe sunrise over the sea,â he said. âItâs one of the most peaceful, beautiful sights this world has to offer.â
Horatio didnât know how to take that response, having assumed that this man, like most people, was marveling over him.Eyebrow raised, he also glanced at the sunrise. âYeah, itâs alright I guess.âÂ

The scientist was very much a shut-in himself so he had no idea what would bring him to the ocean like this other than the fact that it was peaceful. Horatio attracted his attention easily because it wasnât every day that you saw an actual merman. It seemed he could use the company anyway.
âPerhaps thatâs why Iâm here.â
âYouâre here to keep me company?âÂ
Horatio perked up at that, and any shred of the lessons about trusting strangers others had tried to teach him right out the window. His tail swished happily behind him in the water, news of a new friend exciting, and any notion of possible danger missed by the merman.Â

âYouâre gonna have to forgive me for thinking like that. Most folks havenât seen mermen. We got movies, booksâŠall kinds of things. But thatâs just fiction. Most people donât think mermen or mermaids are real.â
âWell, thatâs rude.â Horatio smiled. âIâm real! I know thereâs stories. Iâve heard a few of them, but theyâre not very nice at all.â A lot of the stories heâd heard about his own kind involved them violently drowning people, if they didnât eat them first.
âStop shining that flashlight on me! Iâm not a damn ghost!â {from Julian}
âThis?â Horatio shined the flashlight again at him, tail swishing excitedly.âIsnât it amazing? I found it in the sand!â Â
âTry shining it at your own face for a few seconds, then tell me how you feel about it.â
Horatio did just that, shining the light at his own face for a moment, and after a few seconds of looking disoriented he smiled again. âItâs so bright!âÂ
And the merman then resumed shining it on the other man, for surely he actually liked the brightness.Â

âYeah, youâre telling me.â
Booker was used to being alone. Sometimes he actually enjoyed it, but not this time.
âDo you ever tire of it? I know I do.â
âDuh. Itâs the worst.â The merman answered without missing a beat. Horatio was more than tired of being alone, out in the ocean while everyone else had the times of their lives without him. (That didnât mean he wanted to leave the ocean, either. He wanted everyone to just move to him.)

âSo you really are a merman? A real one? I thought those were just made up stories.â
âYeah. I am. And theyâre not made up as far as I know.â

âYouâre not a prankster. And youâre not like some extreme artist who made a tail to show off?â
âNo. Iâve had my tail my entire life. I didnât make it.âÂ
