Favorite Whump Tropes
Some of my personal favorite whump tropes.
Lab whump. Top tier. It can be clinical, detached and dehumanizing with a big institution full of whumpers, or intimate and creepy one on one sessions in some mad scientistās basement. Or even both together. Are there other test subjects? Can they escape? What is the whumper trying to find out or create?
Medical whump. I live for this. The more accurate and involved the better. Hospitals, doctors with cold gloved hands, injuries being treated, infections, surgeries, needles, tubes, and tests. The urgency, the pain and fear of everything happening too fast, or quiet hospital rooms filled with softly humming equipment. Also goes great when combined with lab whump.
Unconsciousness or fainting. The whumpee is never more vulnerable than when they pass out. Are they with caretaker when it happens and fall into their arms? Or is it the whumper? Maybe it happened when they were alone and theyāve been out for hours and someone finally finds them. But will it be a whumper or caretaker who finds them?
Drugging. This goes great with fainting too. Did the whumper do it to keep the whumpee from fighting back? Was it the caretaker trying to get the whumpee to relax or keep them from doing something reckless? The helplessness of a whumpee who is still vaguely aware but canāt do anything is great.Ā
Betrayal.Ā Just yes, especially in a team setting. Maybe the team thinks whumpee is betraying them and they do something horrible. Maybe the team betrays the whumpee. Does this break the whumpee and make them join the villian/whumper?Ā
Guilt. Something terrible happens to the whumpee, something the caretaker or the team could have stopped if theyād just been paying attention. Maybe even something as simple as a few hurtful words that drive the whumpee off. This can also go super great with betrayal of the whumpee as well when the team realizes they messed up.Ā
Yes.
