In memory of Laika: a greater friend to mankind than mankind was to her.
Trevor Noah interviewing Judith “Badass” Heumann
x
I’m glad so many people have discovered Judith “Judy” Heumann through this silly little gif set. I am sorry to say she has died at the age of 75. She was known as the mother of disability rights. In 1970 she sued the Board of Education to become a licensed teacher and she won. In 1977 she was one of the organizers of the 504 Sit-in, a 24 day protest for disability rights. You can learn more about her story from her book Being Heumann, the picture book Fighting for YES! or the documentary Crip Camp.
Judy Heumann believed in the inherent value of each disabled individual and would never back down on what she thought was right. Her friends and fellow activists remember her as a strong leader.

May her memory be for a blessing.
This is what it’s like to have dyslexia. Web developer Victor Widell is hoping to shine a light on the learning disorder with this creative coding simulation.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is what it looks like for me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So accurate !!!!!!
This! It can be so hard for people to get it. I’ve been told “you can’t have a disability” because I did well in school or because I have a law degree, because I scored high on the LSAT (which was despite not being able to finish it). Learning disabilities don’t = stupid, it’s just slower and more difficult to read/spell.

Specifically, to “swash a buckler” referred to the act of pounding a buckler (small shield) against one’s own chest as a sort of macho display.
Mmmm… close, but no cigar.
To “swash” is to make a noise by beating one’s sword against one’s shield (or against others’ swords). Via the OED (it’s definition #3 below):
And that “bucklers” are involved also tells you what kind of sword’s involved: not a big expensive longsword of one variety or another (for which you’d realistically need a way bigger shield for any kind of protection), but a shorter, lighter, cheaper weapon.
…Hence “swashbuckler” and words adjacent to it:
…Anyway, it’s a fabulous word. :)
if someone was willing to give you $1000, but you had to engage in an awkward email correspondence with them first, would you do it?
I literally do this every day its called a job
would love a little treat. if “a little treat” was like $50,000
