random PSA, I know a lot of people use duckduckgo as a Google alternative search engine, but it always kind of annoyed me when I was using it because it felt like No Name Brand Google

I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an "AI summary" at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that's relevant.

also a waaayyyyy better sense of design than duckduckgo

okay okay the best part of Heated Rivalry is that it convinces you to route for a 9/10 year situationship, because makes SENSE. Like of course these two aren't going to date, THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO BE VULNERABLE. Neither is in the wrong, they just don't know how to read the other or COMMUNCIATE like adults.

These two boys have OPPOSITE capabilities when it comes to expression: Ilya is a loud, cocky, playboy persona who is forced to speak in a non-native language (and still in the process of learning it). He has a Russian upbringing and clearly grew up in a household where nothing is said directly. One must hint at everything, allude to feelings allowing for deniability. He jokes around constantly, but his feelings are all guarded. All of his actions are direct and fairly confident. But the boy can LIE and misdirect better than most.

And then enter Mr. Shane Hollander, who cannot do subtext to SAVE HIS LIFE. He needs direct wording, and assumes actions are just that, actions. This boy believes people at their WORD. and god he cannot lie for the life of him.

These differences clearly cause them to be attracted to each other (you know Ilya melts for Shane's honesty and Shane is attracted to Ilya's forwardness) and eventually blend together really well, BUTTT the genius of the show is the context. These are male hockey players, who do not know how to discuss EMOtiONS and FEELINGS.

Instead, they ASSUME each other's feelings CONSTANTLY but it makes sense because neither thinks to ask!! Ilya hints at things and then assumes Shane is rejecting him, when in reality Shane is just taking Ilya at his word (not picking up what he's putting down), not the context and subtext around it. Shane assumes Ilya's feelings must not exist because he does not directly say them, because Ilya is so direct about the sex and hockey. And Shane is a terrible liar and is hyper-specific with his choices, so him not admitting directly to having feelings makes Ilya feel like maybe there isn't anything, it is just a fun experience for Hollander to have before realizing he wants "better".

And none of this is infuriating because the characters are developed and cared for enough that the audience know WHY they are miscommunicating - there are too many masculine standards and internalized fear that need to recognize and unlearn.

This miscommunication trope works so well with MLM relationships, because so many men have no idea how to be emotionally vulnerable. In straight relationships, most rely on the female in a relationship to lead in vulnerability. In this case, the boys first have to grow personally to be able to take steps towards a romantic "serious" relationship, because their relationship is a secret and it being a secret MAKES LOGICAL SENSE.

yknow ever since people realized tumblr isnt dead and have decided to flock here from twitter and tiktok ive seen a huge influx of people in fandom spaces who dont reblog anything. at all.

like, i used to have an art blog with 340 followers. not a ton but not a small amount either given how this website works with creators. and in my experience back then even the ones who only left likes still reblogged other things or at least posted their own stuff. literally the only empty blogs were clearly bots.

but on this New art blog, i've had so many people with fandom-specific headers and icons with actual usernames as urls and some kind of title or description, but have. Nothing. no posts. all they do is like things. and it's always public, too. their following list and their likes list.

and honestly all it makes me think is that these people are New and also don't know how tumblr works. how likes don't give exposure. not even in a "oh, i know it doesn't give exposure, but i'm still going to reblog anyways" way, but in a genuine honest to god straight up doesn't realize tumblr likes don't work like twitter's.

PLEASE please if you're from tiktok or twitter or whatever please reblog people's art both fandom and original if you like it!! and maybe actually pad out your blog's content in some way so people won't potentially see you as a bot and block you.

yeah on instagram the only way to interact with other people's posts is either to like them, post them as a reel that lasts a day, or to save them which works how likes work on tumblr--you can see them but they don't show up on your account. Tumblr working like this is absolutely not how any other websites currently work so I definitely understand why new people don't get it, especially since we're the only site that uses the term reblog and people are always saying (correctly) not to repost things but it can feel like they're telling you not to reblog their art if you don't know the terminology.
