Already does. In Star Trek Picard S2 when they went back in time to 2024, none of the characters had to change their outfits because their 25th century fashion was just like, normal jackets t-shirts and trousers in a variety of black, grey and brown fabrics. A stark contrast to early TNG, where - while everything looked painfully 80's - the non-uniform attire was all fun shapes and textures that didn't actually resemble off the shelf clothes as far as I'm aware*

*(I say this because i missed the 80's by a couple of years)

I wrote my thesis in fashion school about scifi in the 60s (with 1/3rd being dedicated to TOS), and the amazing TOS outfits are thanks to William Theiss who managed to use the extremely limited budget they had to make amazing costumes, using things like cheap table decoration and tacky 60s decor to craft insanely cool scifi outfits

Even the uniforms are AMAZING from a tailor perspective!

They didn't want ugly zippers to show so the closures of the uniforms are in the seam of the raglan sleeve!!!!

In all the new adaptations they are lazy and don't do raglan and put the zippers in the back and it looks shit

Not even to mention the incredible lines of the womens uniforms!!!

Like look how smartly the lines for the pattern go, to not just have boring darts in places! These costumes STILL look futuristic!

You could not even see this on 1960s TVs!

I don't have the dress or the book with me, but years ago I used the pattern in one of the early Starfleet Manual books to make a skant. At first, the weird retrofuturistic pattern piece shapes were kinda hard to wrap my mind around. But the more I worked on it, the more I came to appreciate not just the commitment to creating a fresh new aesthetic, but also the practicality of it! The way the pieces are shaped makes it pretty easy to adjust the pattern to fit different proportions as needed

Watching voyager for the first time.

Seven of nine is so clearly a lesbian that it hurts me physically whenever there is an episode about Kim or any other man falling for her.

Also she was part of the Borg collective for 20 years, immediately going for the romance route is such a bad decision I can't even comprehend.

Imagine the trauma she feels, not feeling human even tho she is part of that race, yet she isn't because she grew up as a Borg and it was the only thing she ever knew.

I cannot imagine what she felt, yet the writers decided to immediately go for the romantic route.

Such a disservice for such an interesting character with so much complexity to explore.

One of the most common complaints about Star Trek I saw growing up was “why don’t they use the holodeck more? If you were living in that time period and you could just make anything you wanted anytime you wanted and live out fantasies forever, why aren’t more people addicted to the holodeck?”

And then generative ai was created.

And now I get it. I get why nobody on Star Trek spends all their free time in the holodeck. I get why all the crew are putting on stage plays, and holding music recitals, and building models, and playing poker. I get why everyone was so skeptical and mean to the Doctor on Voyager. I get why the ONE TIME we see someone obsessed with the holodeck it infringes on people’s likeness rights and permissions.

Because fundamentally at the end of the day we are human beings and we ENJOY working with our hands and making REAL human connections. A person who learns to play an instrument is always going to be viewed as an artist over someone who asks the computer to generate music for them.

Even as recent as Lower Decks they were making fun of the fact that the crew were putting on amateurish plays and holding music recitals. But after living with Ai for so long and seeing how detrimental it’s been to the world… I’d much rather watch my friends put on a stage play than “participate” in a holodeck movie.

What’s most amazing about this is that it was completely unintentional. I do not for one second think that the writers of the time in the 90’s were really thinking about the larger issues that generative ai and chatGTP would cause. How could they? Text to speech back then was still robotic as heck. More likely they wrote that stuff in because it was cheaper to film on sets the owned than try to build, film, or rent out different locations each week.

That’s the down to earth logistical real reason Data is reciting poems about his cat or Riker is in a play put on in ten forward. It’s just cheaper to do that than to build a whole new set or move production to a new location.

Yet at the end of the day, I think that unintentionally speaks to a very human need that ai is making more and more prevalent to us day in and day out.

And that’s the fact nobody wants to deal with generative SLOP.

One thing I really like and find personally resonant about Julian Bashir is the fact that he's filled with passion and curiosity and enthusiasm but is also a judgmental hater. Responding to the new Defiant with "I hate the carpet." Responding to Jadzia saying "What I want is Worf" with "Why?" It's a pettiness distinct from his righteous anger over genuine injustice and it really speaks to me.

I think my favourite instance of this is when Julian has to deal with Dukat on board the Defiant in 4x01.

Dukat: I find this whole procedure offensive.

Julian: And I find you offensive.
