rereading the “my dinner with hayden” short story at the end of heated rivalry and yk what? for as much random/meaningless/anonymous/whatever you wanna call it sex that ilya had before he and shane went exclusive, at least he always used a condom. i’m proud of him for that. say what you will about ilya’s potentially reckless behavior but at least he used protection.

(one of) the problem(s) of reading as much cis mlm content as i have (i discovered fanfiction in middle school and definitely read some things that were Not age appropriate) is that i have a pretty solid understanding of how those interactions take place, at least from a fiction perspective, but given both my lack of personal experience and the fact that i just have different anatomy, there are some logistical things about All Of That that i just don’t understand and likely never will. and it’s not like i have any friends i can ask these kinds of questions, there’s no not-awkward way to ask anyone how some stuff works. so i suppose it shall remain a mystery.

genuinely i do think it's crazy how this show hit every single mark for no reason other than pure love of the game. like this wasn't a money grab and it didn't think it would be a big success, jacob just read a book he enjoyed and thought huh i think that would be a cool thing to make into a tv show. and then he brought on hudson and connor and they're fresh and passionate and not bogged down by the industry yet and they instantly became best friends and wanted to just have fun bringing these characters to life. and they didn't have a huge budget but they did the most with what they had and everybody took the show seriously and everybody took the book seriously. the cinematographer worked his magic. the music supervisor managed to snag a well-known queer hit and an up and coming new release and old school gems that have been around since the 2000s. it's canadian to the core, built from the ground up. it takes russians and the russian language seriously. it uses sex in such a specific, meaningful way that almost no other show has done thus far, and especially not in a queer context like this. they interlaced every episode with callbacks and parallelism and self-references. they didn't take themselves too seriously. they took everything so seriously. there is love and care baked into the core of this show and it's deeply queer and it doesn't shy away from the horrors of toxic masculinity and hockey culture but it is also, always, a story of joy and love and happiness. and on top of everything, it's almost word for word, the original source material from the book.

like damn it's no wonder this thing has made us all insufferable and become a huge fucking success! so few productions in hollywood are doing it like this!!!

ugh is shane one of those weird people that like, genuinely doesn’t care about music? ew. like yeah i’m probably biased bc both of my parents are professional musicians so i’ve been around music since before i was even born and it’s one of my favorite things and one of my biggest coping strategies (i’m also the weird kind of person that uses objectively not calm music to calm me down but like. idc that my chemical romance isn’t “calming” if it helps me regulate) but i just really don’t understand people that just. don’t care about music.

like dude it’s your WEDDING, at least care a little. and i think diamonds by rihanna is a nice choice actually. i think my mom may have played it for weddings she’s played for so it’s not that weird. she’s played wu tang clan and fall out boy before (at separate weddings) and she’s doing some weird football team fiddle tune soon. and of course pachelbel's canon probably a zillion times.

shane buddy, if you’re gonna stop with your sad “diet” thing (see some of my previous posts for more of my slightly deranged thoughts about all that) you gotta ease back into eating “regular” food again. believe me, you do not want to experience the gi issues and hypermetabolism and potential systemic shock that can happen when someone starts eating normally again after a long period of restriction. it sucks ass, trust me, don’t learn that lesson the hard way.

hey ilya if you wanna talk about meds i’m right here. i’ve been on at least one (but usually several) different meds in every class of antidepressants there is with the exception of maoi’s (and that’s just bc they interact with too many other things, it just wouldn’t be safe)

can i recommend you some wellbutrin in these trying times?

(this is a joke, ik he’s a fictional character and that everybody responds to antidepressants differently and they’re not right for everyone. but i have been on a shitload of meds and i do love wellbutrin)

iya, babe, good things happening in your life doesn’t magically “fix” depression, that’s just not how it works. believe me, if it did i wouldn’t be depressed. someone get this man a dbt workbook in russian STAT. he’s always so quick to jump immediately to “everything is horrible and i want to stop existing” anytime anything goes wrong and like, i do too but the difference is that i’m on meds and in therapy and have been for more than half my life. he just needs to learn how to stop catastrophizing so much (i say as if that’s easy)

jeez these guys are obsessed with sports (it’s a book about pro athletes ofc they’re obsessed with sports) it’s their day off from playing hockey so they’re watching tennis. and throughout both books they repeatedly watch other teams’ hockey games when they aren’t playing themselves. do either of them have any non-sports related hobbies? like ilya has a dog now, but do either of them do anything else for fun? crossword puzzles, reading non-sports related books, drawing, knitting, play an instrument, anything?

listen i know so little about hockey it’s laughable (i had to look up what a hat trick was when i started reading this series lol) but i cannot fucking believe that shane’s teammates think he tripped on purpose. what the actual fuck. also, tripping on purpose and making it look like an accident is incredibly challenging, at least on solid ground, idk about on skates but still. it’s not like they’re on the slipperiest surface on the planet, y’know, the one that people slip and fall on all the time (sarcasm), even when they’re not wearing boots with knives attached to the bottoms (which if you say it like that it makes the entire concept of skating sound even more insane)
