Title: Holiday Spirit?
Pairing: Moriarty X Reader
Notes/Warnings: Well, this got longer than anticipated and I wasn’t quite sure how to end it, so the ending sucks...
Ring. Ring. It was the incessant ringing of your phone that had woken the both of you up. You sat up and rubbed your eyes, your boyfriend, Jim, following suit. “What time is it?” he asked. With a glance to the clock on your nightstand you replied, “Nearly noon. We slept in.” Jim flopped back down on to the bed, grumbling an annoyed “Ignore it!” into his pillow. “I’d love to, but it could be important.” you groaned as you walked across the room to retrieve your phone from your dresser. Without looking at the caller ID, you answered. “Hello?”
“Good! I was worried you wouldn’t pick up! You sound tired, have I woken you up?” You smiled as soon as you recognized the voice on the other end. Your mum. “Yes,” you began. “work kept me up late last night. Don’t feel bad, though, I would’ve woken up sooner or later!” You didn’t get to see your parents often, as your job kept you very busy. Whenever you did hear from your mother, the two of you usually talked for hours on end (Although, she did the majority of the talking). “At least you know to sleep on a regular basis; your brothers hardly ever sleep!” “They’re too stubborn to do otherwise! Besides, I don’t think that either of them really feel like breaking off their marriages to their work.” you giggled.
You were about to ask your mum if she had been in touch with either of your brothers when you felt a familiar pair of arms snake around your waist and a head rest on your shoulder. “Who is it?” Jim asked. “It’s my mum, you nosy prick!” you laughed. Jim let go of you and feigned hurt. “Is there someone there with you? Who was that?” your mum asked. “Oh, that was just my drama-queen boyfriend, Jim.”
You had to hold the phone away from your ear for a moment as your mother all but squealed on the other end. “She’s seeing someone! Our Y/N’s seeing someone!” she shrieked with joy. “Oh, you must bring him ‘round for Christmas!” Your blood ran cold as she said this. You hadn’t told a single soul who you were dating. Sure, a few people new you were dating a guy named Jim, but nobody knew that Jim just happened to be James Moriarty, the criminal mastermind who had “murdered” and discredited Sherlock Holmes and supposedly killed himself in the process a few years back. To make matters worse, Sherlock Holmes just happened to be your brother. To say that this wasn’t going to blow over well would be an understatement.
“Mum, I really don’t think-” “I wasn’t asking, dear. Now, I didn’t get the chance to tell you earlier, but everyone’s coming here tomorrow for an early Christmas celebration. There’s no way I’m going to let you get out of coming!” “Well, let me just run this by Jim. I’ll, uh... I’ll call you back.” “Of course!”
With an ungraceful thud, you flopped backwards on to the bed. “Why must my life be so incredibly over-complicated?” you groaned as you rubbed your eyes with the heels of your hands. Jim, who had left the room after being insulted, came back and leaned against the door frame, toothbrush in hand. “Want to talk about it? Or will I run to all the other girls and gossip about it?” he mocked. You lifted your hands from your eyes only to glare at him.
A moment later, the bed dipped next to you and your wrists were being pried away from your face. Jim looked down at you, waiting for you to explain. “My mum is having a family Christmas party tomorrow. She wants us to go. The both of us. No way around it. Now that she know that I’ve got a boyfriend, she won’t get off my back until she meets you. I think it would be better for her to meet you sooner rather than later, but Sherlock and Mycroft will be there and I don’t think they’d quite approve of you.” you thought out loud. “Since when do you care if people accept you?” he questioned. “My family is the only exception to that rule.” “Well, let’s just get it over with, then.”
You sat up and faced him. “That’s it? No clever plan of avoidance?” “None at all. If you say it’s better to face your family now, I’ll trust you.” he said. You smiled, reminding yourself that the psychopath that Sherlock knew was far different from the man you loved.
So, the next day, the two of you had packed your bags for an overnight stay at your childhood home, and, after a few hours of traveling, you had arrived.
Your mum, who had been looking out the window when you pulled up, threw down the dish towel she was holding and ran outside to greet you. “Oh, Y/N dear! So good to see you! And you must be Jim. Please, come inside and warm up!” she fussed before scurrying back inside to warm up herself. “She’s something!” Jim laughed.
‘”Y/N’s just arrived with her boyfriend. Come and say hi. His name is Jim” your mother shouted. “Hope you enjoyed your twenty seconds of peace, because we’re beginning our descent into hell.” you whispered. “If it’s any comfort, it wouldn’t be my first time.” he whispered in return.
“Hi, everybody!” you shouted as you crossed the threshold. “Please don’t murder us” you added under your breath. Jim put a comforting hand on your shoulder. The bright lights and pine scent of a Christmas Tree greeted you as you walked into the sitting room. Your father came up to greet you, quickly followed by Sherlock, Mycroft, and John. For a few moments, your father blocked their view of Jim, and for that, you were glad. As soon as he stepped out of the way, all hell broke loose.
Sherlock had just barely stepped forward to greet you when he froze in place, eyes locked on Jim. “Moriarty.” he said, voice icy. That was all it took for John and Mycroft to look up in alarm. “No, He’s dead!” John said in disbelief. “Surprise?” you said quietly, trying to break the tension. “Dear Y/N, do you realize the gravity of what you’ve just done?” Mycroft said. “If you’d allow me a moment to explain-” “You all know each other, then?” your puzzled father asked. “He’s kind of the one that forced Sherlock to jump off of Bart’s...” you said quietly, slipping your hand into Jim’s for support. “Which begs the question why does your boyfriend happen to be James Moriarty?” Sherlock spat at you.
“Why bother explaining? You won’t listen anyway.” you shrugged. “I’ve always been merely a traitor in your eyes.” “You expect me not to? Especially now, when you’ve brought him home?” You didn’t need to look behind you to know that Jim was glaring daggers at Sherlock over your shoulder. “Oh grow up, Sherlock! The world doesn’t revolve around you, so stop trying to control things that you can’t!” you rolled your eyes. “You’re telling me to grow up? You’re acting like you’re still thirteen. ‘But Daddy, I love him’” he mocked. You scoffed. “And when exactly have I ever said that?”
Deciding that you’d had enough of Sherlock’s antics, you turned your back and stormed down the hall and up the stairs to your childhood bedroom, making sure to drag Jim along behind you. “Well you managed to switch the topic from me to your childhood rivalry with Sherly,” Jim offered. “And quite possibly ruined Christmas. Though this wouldn’t be the first time.” you giggled. “So you’re telling me you did that on purpose?”
