witnessing a surge of trans infighting at a time when our rights are under violent, organized government attack that threatens to set back 40 years of progress:
FUCKING THANK GOD IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO SEES THIS. IM LOSING MY MIND. We are gonna die to nazis if yall don't stop. This isnt a goddamn game. People are DYING. Stop talking about what kinks or character interpretations are valid or whatever the hell it is this week. I don't care. Trans people are getting death and rape threats and being driven off the internet by the actions of other trans people.
Love trans people or perish. Those are your only options. If you cannot show kindness and love to other trans people then you are no ally. You just wanted to save yourself. I've seen what yall have said to each other, and about each other. Literally indistinguishable from terfs. IT'S THEIR TALKING POINTS. I'm disgusted with all of you saying and doing this shit to your trans siblings. You have no excuse.
If yall can't accept that you can't hurt trans people without becoming an oppressor, yes even if you are trans, just get the fuck out of our community. You are a threat and are no longer welcome here.
Our memory is absolute shit, and has semi-recently gotten worse, (which is detail for another post; we are considering bringing it up to our therapist and additionally OSDD as a possibility), but we've been suggested by friends to start journaling every day. We got a notebook and a pen with four colors to color-code seasons/months for easier association.
Does anyone have tips for making it enjoyable when we're writing mundane things 80% of the time? We've had it for a few days and still haven't started. The journal is a 3-subject notebook and we don't want to do anything super fancy because that will take more time and energy than we'd like to give.
2. they have 0 concept of disability as a tragedy or something pitiable.
I've watched kids get into an argument with a teacher bc they thought wheelchairs were cool. I told a kid that I can't stand for too long sometimes and they replied, "That's okay, I can't do cartwheels sometimes, but I just do other stuff then. You can sit down with me if you want". Today a girl asked me what the headphones on a classmate's desk were for and I told her that headphones are important for some kids because noises bother them, and she said she wished she had headphones at home, because her baby brothers make a lot of noise and it makes it hard to think. The idea that different people could use tools at different times is intuitive and simple and when accessibility aids are explained neutrally, kids don't see them as bad or unfortunate, they're just things that are useful.
Even mental disability!! In Kindergarten the other day one of the kids asked me why his table partner got stickers when nobody else did. I started off by saying, "Well, when you do your work well, it feels good, right? That's your brain giving you a reward," and the kid just right away went, "Oh, and the stickers are like his reward?" YES! You are 5 and have a better grasp on ADHD than most adults! Kids blow me away every day.
hi! do u know what counts as amnesia for did? like I know it doesn’t have to be in between switches and it can be for trauma. but. does emotional amnesia count? and how do u know if you have childhood memory gaps or if it’s just normal memory? like what if they’re all in third person and u don’t know what age they happened at. what is memory without amnesia supposed to look like? how much r u supposed to remember?
we are unfortunately not qualified to answer this 😥 if someone else sees this ask and is able to answer, please do
i do think that emotional amnesia is a type of dissociative amnesia, though
I'm not an expert, just a system with a psychology hyperfixation and some field research with my trauma specialist therapist lol. This will mostly be about our experiences with amnesia and our interpretation of the DSM's criteria. This is not a diagnosis or a professional opinion, but insight on how dissociative memory feels, in our experience, and what the DSM-5 says about DID (which is the criteria a professional would reference if you were asking them).
I'll just answer your questions under the cut, if that's fine.
But one thing before I do - I want you to know what the DSM-5 says about this, since we're talking specifically about DID:
"The dissociative amnesia of individuals with dissociative identity disorder manifests inthree primary ways: as 1) gaps in remote memory of personal life events (e.g., periods ofchildhood or adolescence; some important life events, such as the death of a grandparent, getting married, giving birth); 2) lapses in dependable memory (e.g., of what happened today, of well-leamed skills such as how to do their job, use a computer, read, drive); and 3) discovery of evidence of their everyday actions and tasks that they do not recollect doing (e.g., finding unexplained objects in their shopping bags or among their possessions; finding perplexing writings or drawings that they must have created; discovering injuries; "coming to" in the midst of doing something). Dissociative fugues, wherein the person discovers dissociated travel, are common. Thus, individuals with dissociative identity disorder may report that they have suddenly found themselves at the beach, at work, in a nightclub, or somewhere at home (e.g., in the closet, on a bed or sofa, in the corner) with no memory of how they came to be there. Amnesia in individuals with dissociative identity disorder is not limited to stressful or traumatic events; these individuals often cannot recall everyday events as well."
Which I think answers most of the question, with some examples. But I'll still share my own as well.
Another note from the DSM-5:
"[Those with DID] often conceal, or are not fully aware of, disruptions in consciousness, amnesia, or other dissociative symptoms. Many individuals with dissociative identity disorder report dissociative flashbacks during which they undergo a sensory reliving of a previousevent as though it were occurring in the present, often with a change of identity, a partialor complete loss of contact with or disorientation to current reality during the flashback, and a subsequent amnesia for the content of the flashback."
For those with DID, regardless of flashbacks (just happened to be touching on that at the same time in the passage), it is expected that you do not have a clear memory of what you're forgetting anyway. So I think it's fair to say if you're finding it hard to remember what you're forgetting, that could be a pretty big sign in and of itself. The criteria is essentially "Dissociative amnesia" that occurs frequently (amount is unspecified but assumed to be a regular to regular CURRENT occurance) with multiple identity states present and "possessions" (fronting). You may forget you even remembered something, in my experience. It's not constant - but frequent.
It also might be fair to say that you don't need to have a gauge for what is "normal" memory before consulting a specialist. They will likely be looking that themselves and (if knowledgeable in DID and dissociative disorders) should have a better baseline for what is reasonable forgetfulness than you or me, since being this forgetful is normal for me. Basically, you should be vaguely aware you're experiencing some amnesia, but you're not expected to know all the details in the hands of a good screener.
Traumatic memory gaps (aka localized or selective amnesia): specific moments in time you cannot remember a single detail, but it's clearly isolated in a short moment. This is common in single trauma events. You often know something happened, and even how it hurt you, but you can't remember the scene at all. I.e "I know I had to have gotten hurt, but I can't remember what happened during it. My more vivid memories began again a few hours later." (those with dissociative disorders may not relate to the "vivid memories" bit at all, as we often go most/all our lives having spotty memories)
A greyout amnesia example: "I know exactly what happened, but I can't remember the perpetuators face."
Large gap in time: pretty much what it says on the tin. This is kind of hard to figure out reteoactively, but seriously, take the time to think about what you remember from your life until this point, if anything. Are there any specific times that are feel "erased" from your memory or inaccessble?
For someone not experiencing amnesia gaps, this forgetfulness is more orderly - "I'm 20, I can't remember when I was 6, it gets spotty at 10, but I remember being 15."
Someone experiencing amnesia gaps would be scattered - some even shockingly recent. "I'm 20, and I have a few memories of being 4, I have a couple from being 10, then it jumps to 13, and nothing from 16-18 either...."
Struggle to recall personal info (generalized amnesia, in a different way than : it's hard to describe, because everyone on a bad day can forget certain things about themselves. I'd argue everyone sometimes forgets how old they are, not being reminded of it for a year... But they often don't struggle to remember it, after they realize.
An example from me: I feel like I know my new address, but after living here for four years, I still feel like I'm guessing it and barely getting it right - sometimes I get it wrong.
It be essentially struggling repeatedly to recall very "basic" information about yourself, whatever it is. It's not deliberate or lazy - you genuinely feel put on the spot by these questions about your life. That's the "impairment or distress" part - even if you can functionally hide it, it's still difficult to manage in a way.
BUT REMEMBER, dissociative amnesia for DID does not have to be traumatic to count as amnesia. It just has to be recurrent in some form - usually daily or several times a day, but it can potentially ebb and flow in length. For me, it was difficult to seperate from just having ADHD as well. But it became clear I was losing hours at a time without even a vague memory, and it began to line up with my switches. This is something alter trackers like simply plural help with a lot iin figuring out mo.
does emotional amnesia count?
Emotional amnesia is not a medical term, so it will not be in the criteria for diagnosis of DID. Emotional amnesia is something I consider a compartmentalization/dissociative technique for dealing with trauma, and my trauma therapist agrees, so I'd say it's a good indicator you're dealing with something too intense for you to handle.
what if they’re all in third person and u don’t know what age they happened at.
Seeing yourself in third person isn't abnormal, especially as time passes from that memory. I have heard that people sometimes view their childhood memories in third person. But, feeling strongly like this can be a sign of depersonalization - especially if you can recall feeling that way in real life, in your body. I experience these with some of my memories, especially early ones, but I do know I used to feel "out of body" in the present moment that I remember some of them, or "an outside observer". That's depersonalization, which is under the dissociative disorder umbrella, basically (alongside derealization). All of these can be experienced with being a system, none of them are listed as explicit criteria. Not being able to know what age you were may also be a sign.
Hopefully this helps, and good luck to you! Let me know if you have any questions. All my information was taken from the DSM-5 - I'm usually not so diagnosis-focused but I wanted to provide you accurate information to DID, not just plurality.
Shoutout to singlets that accept systems for who they are. Singlets who ask respectful questions and try to understand us. Singlets who do their best to accommodate different headmates and make them feel included. Singlets who listen to what systems have to say. You're so important. Please keep doing what you do.
Mildly inconvenient plurality is getting accidentally misgendered by my own headmates 😭 I know our collective perception of gender sucks but c’mon y’all,
it happens a lot with us and individual headmates also end up forgetting their own pronouns sometimes
