This post is really two separate groups questions, but I'm putting them in the same post for the sake of having everything in one place. I apologize for how verbose this is. To make reading it easier, I've put the meat of each section in bold, i.e. the actual questions I'm seeking answers for; the rest is background info explaining my specific needs. Putting it under a cut since it's so long. This post is also on my Cohost.
Edit: I use Windows and have an iPhone, if that helps with specific software recommendations, though both of those might change in the future.
Question 1 - For sighted people with ADHD who struggle to read
I love to read, always have, but over the course of my life as my only-recently-diagnosed ADHD got harder and harder to manage, I started finding it more and more difficult to actually read. I don't have dyslexia, and my actual reading ability is perfectly good, but I get so understimulated so quickly that, even with stim toys, music, and all my other coping skills at the ready, I can't read a book for long. Even if I really want to! Even if I'm otherwise enjoying reading it!
Naturally, this causes a variety of problems for me, and I'd like to find a way around this particular difficulty. My dad has, on multiple occasions, suggested that I might use a screen reader for reading digitized books (ebooks, textbook PDFs, the second draft of my sibling's manuscript that's been sitting in my email inbox, etc.), as well as listening to audiobooks when possible. I am not part of the primary demographic for whom screen readers are made, so I have next to no knowledge of what the options are, how feasible/applicable a screen reader would even be, or how to use one (especially since I wouldn't want it on all the time).
So, now that I've laid out the situation, here's my question. Sighted ADHD folks who struggle to read, have you found screen readers to be helpful for reading ebooks and the like? If so, what screen reader(s) would you recommend? If not, why not, and is there an alternative solution you recommend to make reading easier? And if you have any other feedback about this, please feel free to add it. I'd prefer a free option if possible, or at least affordable enough that I won't regret dropping money on it if it doesn't work out. Money is tight, and all that.
Question 2 - For people with conditions that impede prolonged keyboard use
I have chronic pain that affects most of my upper body, particularly my neck, shoulders, arms, and hands. It isn't the result of a repetitive motion injury, but it is aggravated by both handwriting and using a computer mouse/keyboard for extended periods of time. Unfortunately, I am a computer science major in college, as well as a hobbyist writer and avid gamer, and my current job requires using computers for 12-hour shifts. This causes problems, too. With medication I'm usually able to manage my pain well enough to live my life, but sometimes the pain gets worse than the meds can handle.
When my pain gets bad, and I can't use a computer or write by hand, the facts of my life mean that I almost always still need a way to write. Homework deadlines wait for no one, and boredom is a miserable fate given the whole ADHD thing. Dictating what I want to write/type to another human to have them write/type it for me is a very awkward and inconvenient solution. My dad has suggested several times that I try speech-to-text/dictation software so that I can narrate what I want to write and have the computer type it up for me.
Every speech-to-text program I've tried in the past has been…pretty damn inaccurate, and required lots of manual corrections, negating any usefulness it may have had re: mitigating pain. However, the last time I tried something like that was several years ago, and I know voice recognition technology has gotten much better in the time since.
So here's my question. Folks who struggle to type or write by hand for extended periods, what speech-to-text software or other hands-free writing solutions would you recommend? Again, free or inexpensive solutions are preferred, money is tight. If there aren't any good dictation programs out there that don't make tons of mistakes, what should I look into instead? If there are good dictation programs out there I can use, is there any advice you have for dictating text in a way that minimizes misinterpretation on the computer's part? And is there any hands-free method of writing code? Again, any other feedback on this matter is welcome.

what is true is that attached males do have hugely enlarged testes proportionate to the rest of their bodies & organs, and that they receive all nutrition from the female’s bloodstream so their stomachs are always empty, though their own gills seem to still be functional, as are their fins and muscles—you can even induce movement and swimming motions on recently dead attached males. I can only assume that at some point someone said that basically the only biological function a male anglerfish needs to perform is sperm production and this got taken out of context and luridly exaggerated over time. he’s not just a pair of testicles! he’s her forever partner! one flesh one end!
