When I see pics of earth from space at night, it hits me how much of our planet is uninhabited. You see the lights of population centers clustered along coasts, rivers, and other habitable zones, broken up by vast swathes of darkness.

Our hearth fires are bigger, but we haven't changed that much. Just a race of apes, clustered around massive fires made of light, our backs to the vast darkness that forms 99.9% of the rest of the night.

One of the guys I worked with told us a story about how, when they were doing archaeology surveys in the woods they ran into a bigfoot hunter. Bigfoot guy asked if they had seen signs of bigfoot, and he was like "Sorry, nothing like that. We're archaeologists, so we're looking for human stuff." and the bigfoot guy was like "Oh! I saw some Native American cairns on my way out here. I can give you a general location." and when he was like "Yeah dude, that'd be sick. We're actually looking to document those." the bigfoot guy was like "Yeah, they looked pretty cool. I didn't touch them though, because Native Americans built them, not bigfoot."

This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.

I’m reading about pigs in medieval iconography and it’s fascinating how you can trace a direct line from their medieval perception as being icons of gluttony, excess, sin, and carnal overindulgence to the way “pig” is used as an insult today.

The average modern person has zero concept of how far back their default prejudices often extend and just how little some things have changed in 600-700 years.

This gets kinda fine-grained though because the medieval stereotype of pigs as ravenous (both carnally and hunger-wise) gluttons who destroy everything in their pursuit of what they want is as much based on wild boars as it is on domestic pigs.

So the trope isn’t actually as much of our own making as you might think. Boars are a whole other category of insane as far as animals go.

Hey hey, as a librarian, can I just say don’t pace yourself at the library. I get a lot of customers saying “oh I shouldn’t get too many books out at once” but like you should!!!! Max out your card, take everything we have on a subject you’re interested in, make a book fort in your home. We love that shit! It doesn’t matter if you read them or not; just take them for an adventure and bring them back whenever they’re due!

For public libraries, one of the ways we secure funding year to year is lending. Governments don’t want to fund more books if they’re not being used and the way we measure use is by issues. Regardless of whether you read it or not, whether you have it for a day or a month, if you issue it to your library card, we get the stats! It makes the library look good!

Help your local library; get books out even if you know you can’t read them all!
