lockwood & co is great because at least 40% of the show is the Gang™ getting into scrapes and situations and lucy/george are like oh fuck what are we gonna do we're trapped!!! and then lockwood is like fear not i have a bomb and this almost never solves whatever problem they're facing but he keeps doing it

No no hear me out. Think about it. More surface area than the edge of a sword. Better grip probably. Arguably less skill and training required to weild it thus making it more accessible. MARISSA WAS CANONICALLY A TENNIS PLAYER.
I know they have the disadvantage of a lower coolness factor (and probably some technical stuff I can't think of right now) but please consider the low-key hilarious vision of agents using these and killing Visitors like large mosquitoes.

It's hilarious to me how much the second half of the show seemed to want Lockwood specifically to suffer. Three instances come to mind in particular: at Winkman's, at the auction, and the fight with Joplin.
Winkman's in the book: Lucy and Lockwood snoop around, get caught, get thrown out
Show: Lockwood gets ELECTRIC CHAIR TORTURED
The auction in the book: Lucy and Lockwood’s plan works fairly well. They still jump into the Thames, but all in all, it goes according to plan
Show: a DEPRAC agent with a family gets MURDERED and Lockwood has a PANIC ATTACK because he feels at fault
Fight with Joplin in the book: Lockwood has a few scrapes from the fight with the thugs, comes and saves Lucy, George, and Kipps. The gun doesn't go off.
Show: SHOOT HIM AND HOIST HIS COLLAPSED BODY UP THE CATAFALQUE
We could be watching the hollow boy on screen right now if netflix didn't suck
