ACTUALLY i'm adding onto this bc there's something i always notice in ep 6 that i wanna talk abt briefly, and that's yuna & david's faces when shane says "ilya likes both" - especially yuna
there's concern there. it's obvious. and it's SO common when it comes to bisexuality bc there's this huge and annoying misconception that bisexual people are unfaithful unloyal cheaters. and you can see it in her face as she processes the information that this is an immediate concern for her and for her son.
and now let's look at ilya's face
now he's concerned, because he knows he has to explain himself (which he does. he shouldn't have to but he does) and he's basically throwing out a hail mary to shane's parents that says hey, wait, no, i'm not gonna cheat on your son. i love your son. just because i'm bisexual doesn't mean i would hurt shane.
and this is something bisexual people deal with all the time btw. not just from straight people, not just from gen x & boomers, but from our own community too. it's incredibly exhausting. anyway i just notice this every time it makes my heart hurt a bit for ilya.

I don’t understand people who hold the Ottawa plan against Shane because “Ilya gave up everything and Shane gave up nothing” even setting aside the fact that Ilya wanted it and agreed to it. Like. Ilya was the free agent. Ilya wanted a Canadian passport. What was Shane supposed to do to even the scales here lmao? He couldn’t move. Montreal couldn’t take Ilya. What. Was. He. Supposed. To. Do.
Also IT WAS ILYA'S FUCKING IDEA. He's the one who suggested he move to a Canadian team.
I feel like some people are missing the crucial step of WHY Ilya wanted a non-Russian passport in the first place.
It's because he didn't want to put himself in the position of having his passport cancelled and being deported back to Russia FOR BEING QUEER. He's already thinking ahead to coming out or being outed, and that's connected to his relationship with Shane.
And yes. Shane couldn't be the one to move because he still had years on his contract (it's either two or three, I can't remember which).
It was Ilya's idea to move to Canada, yes. But he could have gone to a team with a chance of winning. He could have gone to Edmonton or Toronto (and killed Dallas Kent, as a treat) or Vancouver. But it was Shane's idea for Ilya to go to Ottawa so he could be close. For a famously terrible team. And then, the thing that really bothers me, is several times throughout the narrative Shane judges Ilya for being on a terrible team or for not caring that his team is terrible.
Like what the fuck Shane? He could be anywhere in Canada right now, him playing on this terrible team was your idea!
okay but the problem with Edmonton and Calgary and Vancouver is that these teams are:
in a different conference, meaning Shane and Ilya would play and see each other much less frequently during the season
farther from Montreal than Boston (far enough to require 4+ hr flights) and in different time zones too, making visits and communication harder
likely lacking both demand for a star centre and the cap space to pay Ilya enough
meanwhile Toronto is:
definitely lacking both demand for a star centre (unless they kill Kent) and the cap space to pay Ilya enough
more of a rival to Montreal than Ottawa is, both in canon and IRL
about the same length of a drive as Boston is from Montreal (farther but without the border crossing)
by contrast, Ottawa is such a good solution it could only exist in a romance novel. it is:
a two-hour drive to Montreal (maybe a little longer with traffic arena-to-arena but probably shorter house-to-house depending on where Ilya buys)
Shane's hometown (meaning Shane has every reason to visit regularly)
"desperately" in need of a star centre (meaning the team would be eager to sign Ilya and accommodate his contract and other stipulations)
not as much of a rival to Montreal as either Boston or Toronto (meaning Shane and Ilya can begin to put the rivalry to rest)

shane hollander canonically watches a lot of movies. unclear how much he likes them, and unclear what type he gravitates toward
so my questions: does shane watch (a lot of) horror movies? does he like them? if yes, what does he like about watching them? what are his favourites? why?
ok so if I’m being honest with myself I don’t really think Shane is thinking that hard about the movies he watches, tbh. Probably he has normie taste, and just watches whatever’s new on the plane. He probably really liked Hunger Games and Guardians of the Galaxy, yk? The blockbusters.
But listen! If this is my playground and I get to snap my fingers and make Shane a film bro, here’s what I’d do. In my world, he was a bit of a sensitive kid who was tormented by older boys who’d show him shit just to freak him out. Like most lurid, nasty, Martyrs (2008) Clockwork Orange (1971) type of movie. The first time he cried. After that he learned to shut the fuck up because that made it worse.
That doesn’t stop the torment, obviously, because they’re always working to reopen the first crack in his armor. I think they watch something with a big scary reputation which is actually more thinky than scary like the Exorcist and Shane is like huh. I feel something stirring within my chest. And then from there, whenever he can’t sleep at night or he’s freaking out about something, he self-soothes by thinking about being possessed by a demon that makes him piss and vomit and masturbate in front of the public and his mother. And then a kindly, tormented priest comes and exorcised the demon into himself and kills himself in front of Shane, and then Shane can go back to normal. And his mother still loves him and understands that the little episode wasn’t his fault.
the applications for this version of Shane’s feelings towards Ilya are left implicit as an exorcism for the reader.
