Izzy gasped quietly at his explanation, a hand lifting to cover her mouth. She was both horrified and sad, feeling disgusted with the place she used to call home. It had been surprising, initially, to discover the real force behind Alicante, the corruption and violence no matter who stood at the helm. Now, it was only heartbreaking, knowing that stories like Simon’s friends’ were normal, especially in this town.

“That’s horrible, Simon. Truly horrible. I’m sorry,” she paused, lifting a hand to rest it on his arm. “I only wish it could’ve been different. All of it.” If only her family had seen it sooner, helped stand up to the Death Eaters and defeat the corruption in Voldemort’s era. She sighed, before picking up the pace again, intertwining her arm with his this time. “Maybe you should bring the dates to them. Deliver flowers or something? I could go with you?” She offered, feeling, in some way, responsible for their pain.

Simon flinched at the initial contact, the touch having come unexpected, but it wasn’t long before he settled into it, appreciating the comfort. It was the first conversation he’d had in a while where he felt truly seen, her distress for him coming across as nothing other than genuine. Although he wasn’t the one who’d been injured, who’d been failed, he still felt an undeniable amount of concern for his friends, for how they’d ended up. It was nice for someone to recognise that, to understand how it had affected him. “Thank you.”

“It isn’t your fault. But - I wish it could have been different, too.” Simon would’ve done anything to trade places with them, to have himself in that hospital bed instead. All he could offer now was the promise to better himself, to ensure it didn’t happen again. Next time Emily and Pietro were at risk, he’d be there, protecting them. They continued walking, and Simon found the confidence to lead Izzy by the arm she’d wrapped around his, his face etched with the smallest of smiles. At her suggestion, he came to a stop, turning to face her. “Yes. Yes, I’d like that. That’s a lovely idea.” Simon had visited them plenty, but the thought hadn’t crossed his mind today. He was once again surprised by her thoughtfulness, and he nodded, already wondering where they could find flowers to give them.
