I'm trying to write a post about tick safety and avoiding tick bites, but a lot of the info on websites is like "Avoid going in the woods, in plants, and where there are wild animals" and "Activities like hiking and gardening can put you at risk" and I'm like thanks! This is worthless!
As ticks and tick borne illnesses are expanding their range, I think it's important for people to be educated about these things, and I think it's especially important to give people actual advice on how to protect themselves instead of telling them to just...avoid the natural world
Rough draft version of Tick Advice:
Ticks don't jump down on you from trees, they get on you when you brush against grass, brush, bushes etc.
Ticks get brought to an area when they get done feeding from an animal and fall off them. In the USA, the main tick-bringing animal is deer, but I've seen plenty ticks on feral cats and songbirds.
Ticks get killed when they dry out so drier areas with more sunlight are less favorable to ticks.
The above is useful for figuring out whether an area is likely to have lots of ticks, and how vigilant you have to be in that area.
Wear light-colored, long pants outside. Tuck your pants into your socks, and tuck your shirt into the waist of your pants. Invest in light, breathable fabrics idc
IMMEDIATELY change out of your outside clothes when you come back from a tick-prone area, wash them, and dry them on high heat to kill any ticks that might be stuck on.
Shower and check yourself for ticks after coming inside. Hair, armpits, and nether regions in particular. You can use a handheld mirror or rely on touch; an attached tick will feel like a bump kinda like a scab
While you're outside, you can just periodically check for ticks by running your hands down your legs and checking visually to see if anything is crawling on your clothes. Light colors make them easy to spot, and they don't move fast.
Combing through each others' hair to check for creepy crawly critters is a time-honored primate ritual and is not weird. When hiking, bring a friend who will have your back when you feel something on your neck and need to know if it's sweat or a tick
If you're careful, you can usually catch ticks before they bite you, but if one does bite you, it's not the end of the world. Since tickborne diseases are different regionally i suspect this advice will differ based on where you are, but the important thing is remove the tick with tweezers (DON'T use butter, a lit match, or anything that kills the tick while it's still attached, please) and contact a doctor to see what to watch for. Most illnesses you can catch from ticks are easily treatable if you recognize them when symptoms first appear
important to know too is that lyme disease has to physically move from the stomach of the tick to the salivary glands, that's actually how it infects its next host, since ticks tend to latch on for days this process doesn't have to be instantaneous, and it usually takes at least 24 hours to actually migrate to where you can even be exposed to it, that's why it's so important to identify if one is on you in the first 24 hours, if you do that there's almost no chance of you catching any pathogens from a bite
When removing ticks by tweezers, pull the tick back away until the skin tents, and wait. The tick will release.
Lyme disease is usually carried by the deer tick. They’re really tiny, about the size of a poppy seed. Where I am, dog ticks are usually more common, and they have a white necklace kind of stripe, and they’re on the bigger side. (For a tick; ticks are still small.)
So if you find a tick, and you’ve been bitten, and you don’t know for how long, first consider what kind of tick it is. If it’s a dog tick, you’re probably okay. If it’s a deer tick, I know for my state there’s a lab you can send it to to see if it’s carrying Lyme disease (whether or not it’s bitten you). If you’re still not sure, keep an eye out on the bitten area for a bull’s eye mark. That’s your indicator for Lyme disease.
We used to use a burnt match to get the tick out, but not anymore because of what happens. The tick can regurgitate with that method before it backs out.
Even if you kill the tick while removing it, still don’t panic. It’s not the end of the world. It’s just not something you want to keep doing.
GIRL WHAT??? Horrifying.

the best part abt torrenting imo is that it reminds me so much of the old internet with the “12 minutes left, 53 minutes left, 50 minutes left. 2 hrs. ok it’s done.”
Yes, and also not paying.
yeah the not paying is the best part also
Republicans are garbage.
It sucks, friends
Just got far enough out of our bankruptcy that our credit is starting to heal.
Middle-class, American-born-and-raised Brit here. Believe me when I say the loss of the NHS is probably my biggest fear. The NHS is struggling currently (and for whatever my personal experience is worth, it has deteriorated over the last decade). However, the US style of healthcare is so manifestly, clearly inferior in terms of cost vs outcome that it's unthinkable any reasonable government would even consider it.
The problem in that sentence, unfortunately, is 'reasonable.'
Remember that bit where “Joe” went around asking Brits to guess how much basic ass healthcare costs people in the United States? (link)
Don’t let your politicians Americanize—aka privatize & profitize—the NHS any more than they already have, because it sucks!
As a USian, I have to tell you, it's even worse than having to pay a lot for your health care. What actually happens is that you simply don't get health care.
Years ago I was very broke when my doc recommended a CT scan. CT scans cost about $3k with insurance. I did not have $3k. I felt okay, so I didn't get it.
Five years later I had a third of my lung removed when it collapsed from the cancer that could've been caught early if not for the price tag.
Privatized health care kills. It nearly killed me already. I'm confident that, when I die, it will be from something that could've been avoided if I could've just fucking paid for it.
btw i think its so cool when my life is worse due to worker strikes because when my life is worse constantly the rest of the time its due to the corporate greed of one million random faceless corporations who are grinding up the entire planet in a meat grinder so little numbers on a screen go up and stay green or whatever the shit
This guy alone just filled my "live your life with passion" quota for the year.
Funniest thing is the quick "settle down mate" and the dip into the Australian accent as he gushes over how pretty it is.
Knowing herpetologists: literally every one of them under 40 was influenced by Steve Irwin. The Austrailian accent and repetition of Irwinesque phrases (what a beauty, look at the size of this fella) is involuntary but an important part of the snake catching ritual.
This guy is adorable. Good for him.

this is hard proof that tumblr has gotten better because if I had made this post in 2015 I would have gotten several death threats by now
