Fainting does not hurt but everything leading up to it is fucking insufferable. I don't know why I bother trying not to faint because actually fainting is a much less unpleasant experience than almost fainting for me.

Even so, I wouldn't describe almost fainting as literally painful for me, although I also wouldn't fault someone else for calling the same experience painful.

Hey, I know you can't donate blood or plasma if it makes you faint, but will they let you lie down if that keeps you from fainting? I can do stab without fainting if I lie down but idk if that "if" means I shouldn't bother trying to donate plasma and you are the Plasma Information Person (I tried finding the info myself but I just keep getting 'you can lie down at home later' and 'you can lie to the blood donation people')

to my understanding a lot of places do let you lay down, but it would be best to call ahead and just ask if you can lay down while donating. as far as what makes you faint, you might actually do better with donating plasma than donating blood. you get most of your blood back when you donate plasma! you can try upping your salt and water intake (lot of soup, broth, high sodium electrolytes (look at the sodium content), canned vegetable juice, and of course a ton of water) for a few weeks and if you tend to faint from the loss of blood volume, then this should make it a bit better.

but either way I think this is best answered by someone else. anyone know?

I do not know a whole lot about plasma donation. the most I know about is what it gets used for and how it tastes.

Every time I’ve donated blood the position is almost lying down. And the chairs are adjustable, so if the person responsible for you is good, and sees you start blacking out, they’ll raise your legs and drop your torso.

Also, since it’s really common to be a little woozy, they’re usually good if you need an extra minute in that chair before heading to where the juice and snacks are. I’ve even done one blood drive where someone would hang on to you while walking over just in case.

If you’re a first-time donor (this will come up during screening) the donation staff should be extra looking out for you as well.

All of this to say: give donation a shot! If you’re worried about passing out have a buddy who can make sure you get home safe, but otherwise the risks are pretty low.

(and no I have not done a NASA lean test, I possibly should since it's a condition of Almost Fainting and I mostly Almost Faint, but I only faint/almost faint when I perceive blood coming out of me or when I experience jostling that could reasonably cause a concussion so it's never been high on my priority list. On the other hand maybe the fact that i don't actually need a concussion to faint from being jostled real hard means something is wrong with me.)

By “perceive blood coming out of you” do you mean “see blood” or “feel like you have less blood now”?

Lots of people have a hard time with seeing blood. Let the staff know, and they’ll make really sure you look away at the appropriate times and cover up the stick site. (In my experience most will do this anyway, but it’s always good to be explicit)

If it’s feeling the blood leaving… could be a bit more tricky. It’s not really like having blood drawn, and takes way longer.

One more note: if you want to play with your phone during the donation, make sure to pull it out before they stick you. Whichever arm they go with will need to be fairly immobile so you don’t pull everything loose.

Okay, I lied, another note: the advice about drinking lots of water and eating beforehand absolutely makes a difference! Not just in avoiding passing out, but in actually getting blood out of you. The one time I was rushing around before donation and didn’t have time to drink lots my blood was apparently sludge and so the donation failed because it wasn’t coming out fast enough.

I also suspect some amount of orthostatic intolerance in myself (haven’t done a lean test, but I’ll be bringing it up at my next doc visit) but I have no issues giving blood, since it doesn’t trigger my particular problems.

(right blog this time) it seems to be either. I've fainted from Small Cut On Finger and nearly fainted from Blood Draw I Was Not Looking At. The faster I take care of an injury and the less bleeding I see the less likely I am to faint, but for blood draw the only things that help are lying down and -- yeah, making sure I am hydrated and fed, bc if I'm not it may take them multiple tries to stick me and then I freak out more even if I don't faint lol. But those things *do* really help, so if they let you recline I bet I can do it! Thank you for the advice! <3

Every time a medical professional tells me to do breathing exercises and then measures my blood pressure they freak out because I'll go from like 110/60 to 170/110 in five minutes and I keep telling them that the slow-count breathing just makes me feel dizzy and like I have to pant to make up for it after the fact.

Writing this post has been miserable because even looking at the word "breathing" this many times has made me feel like I can't catch my breath but when I walk away for a couple minutes and stop thinking about inhaling and exhaling I know I'm going to feel fine again.

I fucking hate it when that four square breathing gif circulates or when I get an ad for a relaxation game on Duolingo, that shit breaks my lungs/brain for minimum twenty minutes every time.

Regarding your latest fundie masterpost: these descriptions make them sound utterly joyless and ascetic. When they usually aren't? Where does fanatic patriotism come in? I thought it was conflated and blended with faith. Also, does the average fundie like...refuse to do anything fun? I'm not sure that's consistent with what I know about Americans. Maybe I'm confused, but I live in a pretty conservative city, albeit not in the deep south or bible belt, and while I see plenty of "I kneel for the flag and stand for the cross" "blue lives matter and I would fuck my gun I could" I don't see these conservatives Christians espousing quite the same views as you list. Is it just that I don't know them well enough personally, or that these are a different variety of American conservative Christian?

A lot of them actually live and act like normal people and may also completely defy all those teachings (allow their kids to read harry potter, have atheist or gay friends they don't try to convert, etc.) but they still believe all that stuff applies to everyone but them. Like I have *three* different uncles on the same side of the family who live by the whole "what would jesus do" philosophy, they help everyone they meet without asking anything in return, they're always telling jokes and complimenting people and generally on the outside completely carefree and seemingly kind, and they actually don't even push their religion on anyone. And yet they absolutely believe that every single person in the world who ever has or ever will fail to share their exact same faith is going to spend absolutely all of infinity burning in agony. They have never shown a sign that this bothers them in the slightest. I don't interact with them because it's just too creepy knowing that's what they both think and accept that easily. There are millions of Americans like my uncles and they might never even tell you they believe that stuff at all, but they go to those churches and donate their money to their political causes too lol. There are also those who believe only a fraction of it but still attend and donate all the same, too, because the church supports a couple things they’re really big on politically. We are a horror country.

This got too long for the reply function lol but that post might imply to the unfamiliar that God and angels ONLY do bad awful things to followers when actually every GOOD thing that ever happens to you is A Gift From God, and every bad thing that ever happens to you is a TEST from God and if you handle it well you will be rewarded either in this life or the next, so fundies and evangelicals actually tend to be very positive people if they're ate up enough! They're #grateful for everything in their lives! Good things are only From The Devil if they encourage you to be less Christian.

And the trick re: asceticism is that LOVING money is idolatry, but HAVING it is A Gift From God, and probably a reward for being Pious Enough, so you can aim for being rich or going to disneyland as long as you acknowledge that if you get there you're #blessed and not there on your own merit. Conveniently, poor fundies get to feel good about being poor -- because they're being tested, because God gives his hardest battles to his strongest warriors 😔 -- and rich fundies get to feel good about being rich -- because they're being rewarded -- and nobody gets to hate rich fundies because they're obviously doing something right if God is giving them ca$h money, but EVERYONE gets to hate rich non-christians because THEIR money is from the devil, and everyone gets to hate and/or feel superior to poor non-christians because they're either being punished or ignoring the obvious call to Christ in their circumstances. Except you usually don't use the word "hate," because hate is equivalent to murder in some denominations. Usually the word you use is "love."

Anyway in my family the patriotism came in through several windows, including miscellaneous prophecies both biblical and not and the idea that the US is the only country where you're genuinely free to be (protestant) Christian. Which somehow coexisted with the idea that we were oppressed for being Christian in the US. Lol.
