Shiboyugi things I think were explained better in the novel than the anime
Ghost House
- Yuki has a rule that if she needs to kill a player to get past a trap its the player thats closest to her. Thats why Kinko was chosen.
- the makers of the game only expected 3 people to live at the end because newbies have a lower survival rate, this is also why Yuki doesn't look for any alternate route (no idea why there is smoke/fire seems to be something added to the anime to give a sense of urgency? But it was much more calculated in the novels)
Scrap Building
- Chie died because she was useless. Mishiro explains this one as she hears her dying: everyone else had taken turns being the front of the group and Yuki had gone back for Mishiro and Kotoha whereas Chie did nothing.
- the game was designed to easy enough to push one player as the front/leader because of the voting trap at the end. The only ones who realized this were Yuki and Kotoha
-Mishiro did initially contemplate voting for Yuki or Kotoha but ended up voting according to the rules in the end
- Mishiro's arm wasn't able to be reattached after the game because it was eaten, she ended up with a prosthetic* so she could continue playing specifically so she could face Yuki again.
Golden Bath
- Yuki woke up last as a penalty for accidently swallowing the transmitter given by Kinko's father. The game runners removed it but it wasn't something they would just overlook.
- Riko had both her arms and legs replaced with prosthetics, paid for by Mishiro, because they were eaten by a similar beast as the one that took Mishiro's arm.
- This is also why Mishiro took her in as an apprentice** and they were close enough to have met outside the game several times.
- there were a handful of players left behind after the game ended. One of them survived a month eating weeds but eventually died of starvation. Others died fighting over the exit, and a third hit her head looking for keys.
Additional explanation: there were two sets of keys for the shoe lockers, silver and gold. The anime actually heavily edited this storyline. The keys were needed to open the shoe lockers to get shoes to cross the floor since it was electrocuted, Riko had two sets for her arms and legs and these were the ones the players were fighting over.
- Yuki led five people on a suicide run to the entryway, all of which were taken out by Mishiro's group.
* Prosthetics and body modification are super common among veteran players in the novels. However theres a limit since anything that could be considered a weapon is against the rules. Thus many players have iron prosthetics/mods
** mentor/apprentice relationships are also brought up a lot. Finding a mentor is the only way to learn more/study for the games since they cant be talked about due to the underground nature.

Yuki really wanted someone to take care of and figure out and he got it.

A few months before he passed away in 2003, a 74 year old children’s television host sat down in the same studio where he had filmed 895 episodes over 33 years and recorded one last message. It wasn’t for children. It was for the adults who had grown up watching him.
Fred Rogers hosted Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on American public television from 1968 to 2001. For over three decades he walked into the same set, changed into a cardigan and sneakers, looked directly into the camera, and spoke to children as if each one of them was the only person in the room. He never raised his voice, never talked down to his audience, and never rushed a single moment.
In that final recording, he looked into the camera one last time and said “I’m just so proud of all of you who have grown up with us. And I know how tough it is some days to look with hope and confidence on the months and years ahead. But I would like to tell you what I often told you when you were much younger. I like you just the way you are.”
He passed away from stomach cancer on February 27, 2003. He was 74.
Sometimes you're in your 50s and still need a dose of courage from Mr. Rogers when the world feels scary.
I will forever miss Fred Rogers. RIP
