500 Miles (Spencer Reid x Reader)
AN: Hey everyone! I am finally out of this writing slump (huzzah!) and am feeling the writing bug once more! My requests are open and feel free to drop in a question or a vent if you need to as well! đ -Kate
Summary: You've been having a hard time with your family but won't let anyone into your chaos, that is until a pretty boy from the BAU corners you about it in the conference room.
WC: little over 2k (not too bad for being in a drought for 2 years lol)
Song I was listening to while writing
Warning: Angst/comfort, use of y/n (I know it bothers some so I'll put it here just in case)
Today was one of those days that you yearned to be woken up by the sounds of the birds, fresh coffee being made, you'd even take a siren from the fire station down the block from your apartment.
Alas today was not one of those days, it never was for you.
You woke up with a jolt of your phone ringing non stop with messages from your family. You leaned over to your nightstand with a propped up elbow to read them.
When are you going to come and visit hon? Don't forget about us. Answer your mother, don't be ungrateful. You better make it down, were not getting any younger here. You never know when it will be the last time we see eachother.
You sighed and threw your phone to the side as you flopped down on your back and stared at the ceiling,
"Thanks guys, nice to hear from you too..." you said to yourself as you crawled your way out of bed to get ready for another shift at the BAU.
-
As you made your way to the elevator to head upstairs, you could feel the buzzing of texts incoming on your side. Feeling your shoulders tense, you grab your phone to put it on silent and push through the opening doors of the elevator.
Just before the doors close you hear a familiar voice yell "hold the doors!", which you managed to do, nearly jamming all but your thumb in between the doors.
They open once again to see Spencer, signature thin smile as a silent thank you and all.
"Cutting it close this morning doctor?" You always called him that due to your equal obsession with doctor who, plus you secretly love watching his neck flush with the nickname.
"Yeah... I guess" Reid said sounding like he was chasing his own breath,
All you could do was smirk and nod to yourself, but like clockwork your phone begins to ring.
Confusion sets in as you pull your phone out and see that you are receiving a call from your mom.
Stupid emergency contact settings, you think to yourself as you decline the call.
Reid scrunches his face and looks from your phone back to you, "You sure you don't want to get that? it could be important."
You reflect his thin smile back and sigh looking back down to the ground, "I will call them back after the case, Garcia said it was a big one."
Thankfully the doors opened before he could ask further questions.
-
Unfortunately for you the case was quite cut and dry, UNSUB left a calling card at all his dump sites so you guys were all back by the end of the week.
As you were all filling out of the plane, your phone would not stop going off. No matter what you did it wouldnât stop them from forcing you to see the inevitable, which is having to answer before they show up at your apartment.
That canât happen, itâs the only untouched spot I have left from them, you thought.
âWhat is untouched by them?â You cussed under your breath as you realized the supposedly inside thought you had was an outside thought.
You turn around to see Reid looking at you with those glossy brown eyes, laced with empathy and concern.
âOh,â you giggle and look down as you both walk in time back into the BAU. âItâs nothing, Iâll just call them back later.â
He tilted his head as his brow furrowed. Spencer knew that you were strong, but he also knew you were complex.
You wore your heart on your sleeve, but only with the right people. The rest were guarded behind walls of concreate that made the highest security prisons look like a playground. Spencer never took it personally, he just knew there was something you were guarding that made you feel you needed to keep up the façade of a stone-cold FBI agent with the rest of the world.
He always wanted to ask you what made you think you needed to constantly be tough, but he didnât want you to crawl backwards, that was the last thing he wanted between you two. He was willing to play this long game of chess with you for as long as youâd let him, or as long as it took you to fully trust him.
âAre you sure youâre okay?â he slowly pries, âthatâs the fifteenth call youâve ignored from them today, Iâm sure if you ask Hotch-â
âI donât need to be coddled Reid.â You snapped, making eye contact with him for the first time since you had started this conversation.
You knew he didnât want to pry, but you didnât want to be a burden on him or anyone on the team for that matter. They have all been through so much that you couldnât make yourself a liability to them, to have them watching over your shoulder every second of every day.
You left a home of hypervigilance that felt more like a page out of Orwell at times, you wouldnât make your found family and Spencer whom youâve sheltered a crush on since you both started at the BAU fix what they never broke.
After what felt like an eternity of staring at each other, a lost conversation happening between you two, not a word being said but the air being filled with tension, hurt and grief.
âI-âyou say unable to control the cracking in your voice, âI need to be alone.â
Before Spencer could gently grab your elbow, you slipped out of his grasp and ran into the conference room and locked the door behind you.
Just like you always did before the new ground was broken; you ran from the one you loved the most and wanted to hurt the least.
The whole team simply watched in confusion as they saw you run away from Spencer, unsure on what just happened and what caused you to run shaking and in tears from someone you saw as a rock in your life.
âSpence, is everything okay with you and y/n?â JJ was the first to break the silence and his eyes from the direction you ran off to.
âI-I thought so, but something is off with y/n.â Spencer finally breaking his staring contest with the door that separated you two. âI counted almost twenty phone calls from when we left a few days ago to now from family, but y/n always declined the call.â
Garcia runs over with Derek in tow, surprise and confusion written all across the teams face as Emily makes her way next to JJ, creating a half circle around Spencer.
âAlright Reid start from the beginning, whatâs been going on?â Derek asked.
-
As the door shut behind you, the broken gasps for air came out as you threw your phone onto the table and began your marathon of pacing. You could feel all the nerve endings in your body as the world around you began to look like a chalk painting being washed out by the rain.
Youâre a grown adult, you can simply call them and stand your ground.
You took a deep inhale and plunged into the impending fight youâve been avoiding all week, taking your phone and dialing your dadâs number.
The deafening ringing felt like hours, your heart dropped after you hear a voice on the other side of the phone.
âOh, look at that you do know how to use a phone! Guess they do hire the best at the FBI.â Your father grunted out.
âLook Iâm sorry- âyour shaking voice struggling to get the words out,
âOh! Youâre sorry? Well, Iâm sorry I wasted my time trying to get a hold of a child that clearly doesnât want to talk to me. You are the most ungrateful little-â
The whole room began to ring, youâre not sure when you turned speaker on your phone, but next thing you knew the phone was on the floor next to you as your father kept shouting about how youâve been dodging his and the rest of your familyâs calls.
You no longer had the energy to listen to him. The words because background noise as you hear all the names being thrown at you by someone who should love you.
Worthless
Spoiled
Selfish
Entiteled
Difficult
The list just kept coming until you hear the door open and look to see Spencer standing in the doorway. Slowly he walked towards you like youâve seen him do with victims youâve managed to save.
âYou donât need to hear that, itâs lies.â He then ends the call, shuts the phone off entirely and slides it across the room.
âIâm used to it, nothing I havenât heard beforeâŚâ your voice sounding like a shell of yourself, your knees up to your chest, curled up in the corner of the room.
âItâs still lies, no one has the right to tell you who you are except for you,â Spencer tilts your chin up to look at him. âBesides the person Iâm looking at right now is pretty badass.â A small smile breaks through your tears, you slowly put your knees down, opting to sit crossed legged instead, âI donât want a pity party Spencer, I know what I am to them, nothing will change that.â Spencer sits down with you to show heâs going to hear you out for as long as youâll let him.
âIâve always had to be the strong one, I can go a little while longer.â You smile at him, but it doesnât reach your eyes.
âY/n, you donât need to be strong, weâve never asked you to be this image of yourself. We⌠I just love you for you, nothing will change that. You accept me for me, donât think for a second that it doesnât apply to you too.â
The shock of his words only registered minutes later, âyouâŚloveâŚme?â you uttered back.
The impact of his words only registers with him once you repeat them back, âThatâs not how I wanted to tell you that⌠Iâ Spencer stammers for a beat as he tries to scramble his words together.
You giggle at his accidental confession, wiping the mostly dried tears before you grab his hand. He stops rambling after he hears your giggle and looks to you in fear.
âSpencer, for being a genius⌠you are so dumb.â Before he could answer, you grabbed both sides of his face and kissed him. Spencer tenses before relaxing into the kiss, his fingers snake their way onto the base of your neck and pulls you closer.
His lips tasted of stale coffee and peppermint, a taste you never thought you could crave this much before. You craved him.
You pulled back, Spencer whining as you pulled away, his eyes still closed which made you smile.
âSo safe to say thatâs a yesâ he said breathlessly opening his brown eyes to look lovingly into yours.
âYes doctor, I love you more than the moon and the stars.â You whisper to him as you lean in to kiss him once more.
BONUS SCENE
âAlright so Iâm putting twenty on them making out in there.â Emily says reaching for her wallet.
âTwenty thatâs childâs play, Iâm betting forty that they are already fuc- âDerek puts his money on the table but is interrupted by a booming voice.
âAre you all seriously betting on the current relationship status of two federal agents?â Hotch says coming down from his office, observing the obvious pile of money on the kitchen table.
âUh well sir- âGarcia tried to explain herself as Emily, Derek, JJ, and Rossi all stand around the table with their wallets in their hand.
âThirty that Reid stumbled his way through a confession and now they are kissing in the conference room.â He placed his money on the table and walked away from the group with a knowing smirk.
The group goes silent for a beat then JJ pipes into the conversation.
âGuys he wins! He can see them from his office!â They all scoff as they realize they all lost the bet. The whole team groans as they pick up the money, ready to hand over Hotchâs earnings.
AN: Hey guys I'm sorry for the hiatus, hopefully that won't be a reoccurring thing, fingers crossed!
