Knitters I need help!

I started a cardigan for myself a while ago and got angry with it because at first I wasn't happy with the length. I found it in my closet a while ago and tried it on and the length isn't as bad as I thought it was or at least it's not a deal breaker anymore.

I am trying to cast on the button band, I don't want to have buttons on it, it's mostly a cozy cardigan that I just want to relax in, not deal with buttons.

The pattern is Palette by Lisa K. Ross, excellent pattern wonderful instructions. During the creation of this cardigan I decided to slip the first stitch or every row so I could have a smoother ridge to cast the button band. That is not in the pattern instructions but is generally not something that I've seen cause an issue.

Here's what it looks like so far. I've picked up the stitches up to the point where the decreases start for the neckline. I am supposed to have, according to the pattern 77 stitches in this line.

I have 60.

This is not something where you can fudge the numbers to get it right, the neckline will bunch. Provided I don't end up with 77 stitches on the matching section and end up 60, there shouldn't be an issue with the neckline correct?

There's no decreasing around the neck, there's no shaping for the neckline on the button band, it's just 14 rows of 2x2 rib including set up row and turning the button row into a regular ribbed row.

I think I've rubber ducked my way into a solution. Wish me luck I might have pictures later

i love the difference in weavers' attitudes toward warps and wefts. there is SO much consideration and discussion of the traits you need in a good warp yarn and on the other hand i just read the phrase "you could probably weave with a live woodchuck as a weft"
