I hate everything about how people talk about cochlear implants
choice quotes from my class today:
“is it abusive for parents to not get their deaf infant a CI?” *profound silence* “…maybe” “Deaf people who don’t want CI are being extremely close-minded, especially if they are denying it to their deaf children”
“if you can make someone able to hear you should do it!!!!11″
“they’re all upset that they aren’t teaching deaf kids to sign but they’re not teaching their deaf kids to speak. they’re being discriminatory against hearing people and speech!”
and such
I think it’s abusive to give infants CIs, like ohmygoodness. I need to cut into my baby’s head because god forbid they need to use their HANDS to SPEAK.
Everyone in my class was so for it, like they saw absolutely no ethical question here at all - heck yeah, perform invasive surgery on infants that is a total gamble as to its long-term outcome because HEARING IS SO IMPORTANT!!!
and we have to do a mock debate about it next class and I’m just ugh
