Giraffes Hum to Each Other Throughout the Night, And Zookeepers Never Noticed
By Allison Eck
Until now, giraffe caretakers had reason to believe that their long-necked vegetarian friends were strictly silent beings. A 13-foot-long trachea isnât exactly conducive to easy vocalization.
Scientists assumed that, if anything, giraffesâlike elephantsâmight produce infrasonic (ultra-low) sounds below the range of human hearing. But without the data to back it up, researchers couldnât guarantee that giraffes werenât simply producing audible noises out of human earshot.
So a team at the University of Vienna painstakingly gathered 947 hours of giraffe noises over an eight-year period at three European zoos and measured their spectral characteristics, with the goal of finding out once-and-for-all whether giraffesâ socially-structured society lends itself to vocal communication.
What they found was that at night, the giraffes produced a harmonic and sustained âhummingâ that varied in frequency over time. Not only were they humming, but these vocalizations were within the frequency range that humans can hear (albeit on the low side, at an average of 92 Hertz)âŠ

how can ppl say cats dont have feelings like.Â
when my cat got deadly sick she refused to eat a single thing and it had been days but when i started crying she ate just a little bit, and upon seeing how happy it made me, kept doing it whenever she could.
now whenever im sad or crying she finds wherever i am with a mouthful of food and eats the pieces one by one, every time looking up at me making sure i was watching her eat it all because she knew it made me happy. and it DOES make me happy
i love cats!!!Â
im so glad my little Foofy has touched everyoneâs hearts⊠she luvs you all
I legit cried reading this.
Donât let people make fun of you for liking japanese culture.
I am living in japan right now and let me tell ya:
There are people here who canât speak or understand English who play nothing but Missy elliot and ludacris, even in businesses like housing offices and restaurants.
There are people who have cowboy hats and dead cow skulls in their home because they idolize what they assume American homes are like.
There are people who learn English strictly through music videos and American television shows.
There are entire karaoke bars with english songs often sung by people who have no idea what the lyrics mean.
Japan often takes American shows like the powerpuff girls and make japanese versions of them.
They often mistake common Americans for celebrities. I have been mistaken for Micheal jordan, tiger woods, Shaquille o'neal, Tyler perry, and saddest of all: queen latifa.
The act of sprinkling English into your japanese sentences is considered cute and cool and is popular with teenagers. Bonus points if you happen to use it correctly.
Japanese stores sell shirts with english on them and people buy them not knowing that most of those word combinations are nonsense.
Donât let someone shame you for singing an anime opening, using japanese in your sentences, wearing clothing with japanese on it, ect. If anything, this is just one more thing that you have in common with them.
The American/Japanese cultural exchange is so pure and wonderful and I love it so much
OK BUT RESONATE WITH THE SHIRT THING THOUGH
My Chinese relatives buy me shirts from China with English letters on them hoping I think itâs cool
I have a shirt that says âHi Quality Ualityâ
Itâs amazing
It happens alot.
And then whatâs really great is Americans getting tattoos of Chinese characters thinking they mean one thing when they really donât
Also a topic where the reverse happens.
lemme tell you..i have been in a grocery store in Japan and heard the unedited Get Low playin over the intercom..it was literally a Katt Williams moment
Oh, unsensored songs are pretty common.
I should not be hearing an unsensored âMagic Stickâ playing at a family restaurant.
And the best thing is when literally no one shows that they understand what is being said.
I was in a Chinese cafe one time and they had obviously put on their âfuck youâ playlist. I mean, uncensored versions of Fuck You by Lilly Allen, Fuck You by Cee-lo Green, etc. No one else had any idea.
Oh, also, I got my favorite shirt ever in a little tchotchky store in Sichuan:
that last one got me holy shit.
Ahhh capitalism, you sweet summer child
I have been deeply in love with the seemingly nonsensical answer for such a long time, this is unbelievable and wonderful and I adore it so much- what a paradigm shift!!

Today I was rehearsing with the guitarist from the show Iâm doing and I was coughing up a lung bc Iâm sick and I was just kidding but I told him he needed to bring me a lemon for me to slice up and put in a cup of tea and so I show up to the show tonight to get ready and he sets down a big ass lemon on my dressing room table and then brings out like 5 boxes of Halloween Oreos and for those of you who pay attention to my posts you know what a big fucking deal that is and so long story short I now have a lemon and more Oreos than I know what to do with

Omg this is the cutest story đ
THE TAG ON THE FIRST POST SAID HER ROOMMATE HAD A HUGE thing for him what HAPPENED!!!!
my roommate the time had a serious boyfriend of a few years and tried to tell me i couldnât date howard. turns out she wasnât the greatest friend and i didnât need that kind of negativity in my life. so i got a new roommate. Howard.Â
thatâs what happenedÂ

I was asking myself just now why they have â16 and pregnantâ but not â16 and impregnated a girlâ but I realized it would be pretty boring to watch a 16 year old boy play video games and go to school and live life as normal
Whoop there it is
