For those who don't know, recently this Bill was proposed in Parliament in Aotearoa New Zealand by an MP from New Zealand First, a right-wing party that makes up part of our current coalition government:
This Bill proposes adding definitions of "woman", "female", "man" and "male" to the Legislation Act 2019, making these the new legal definitions of these terms that apply across all New Zealand Legislation.
This Bill ignores the fact that trans people in Aotearoa have been able to legally amend their gender markers since 1995, and that people can register their legal gender as non-binary. It also fails to account for the existence of intersex people and general variations of sex characteristics that make this binary impractical (and ironic given the use of the term "biological reality"). AND it does not take into account the fact that Māori (the indigenous people of Aotearoa) recognise multiple genders and did not follow gender roles as westerners see them until colonialism happened.
On top of all that, the claims of protecting the integrity of sex-based rights fall short when you realise that the ambiguity of what "adult" refers to here will actually potentially remove rights, especially around reproductive rights of young people.
The Bill was read at Parliament, and the other parties making up the coalition voted to allow the Bill to pass on to a select committee to review the Bill, gather information, and make a formal report for the House with their recommendations. A part of this process is accepting public submissions.
People can make submissions in support of or in opposition to the proposed bill. You can make your submission online here:
https://www3.parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/make-a-submission/document/54SCSSC_SCF_9E8E8A14-A51C-4567-AB33-08DE9053A7D1/legislation-definitions-of-woman-and-man-amendment-bill
If you need support with drafting your bill, there is a guide on the Parliament website, and some helpful folks have put together a site of resources including a submission generator. (If people have more resources for support, please feel free to add them in reblogs or comments)
Submissions close on Thursday, 02 July 2026 at 23:59 New Zealand Time.
Rhetoric like this is often pushed on the message of a "silent majority" who secretly agree with it. The best way to show that isn't the case is by showing up and making our voices heard. If you are in Aotearoa, I strongly urge you to make a submission and let the Select Committee know you do not support this bill, and you do not support legal discrimination of trans, intersex, takatāpui and non-binary people in our country.
I am constantly seeing people trying to puzzle out what's "ruining books" and it makes me more and more tired. Read a different book. You have more choice in reading material than at any other point in all of history. No one thing can be ruining ALL of them.
"who do you self insert as when you read?"
This is me when I read:
my lord. the two statues you commissioned are finally complete. yeah, the double-order with the vast and trunkless legs of stone and the shattered visage. i like to think we captured the sneer of cold command pretty well. it's a really thought-provoking piece my lord. very deconstructionist. i'm sure that even a traveller a thousand years from now could take one look at it and instantly recognise it must have come from an artistically enlightened culture

why do you think solarpunk sucks? i always thought of it as an optimistic, if naive, idea about a way of life. is it something to do with the conservative myth of self-sufficiency?
solarpunk is just an aesthetic, and that makes it vulnerable to co-opting by fascist movements who fucking loooove aesthetics. like, fascism is primarily an aesthetic politics, and its derivatives to the left (the more milquetoast conservatisms up to liberal progressivism) all traffic primarily in aesthetics and acceptability, which is why all politics in the west have to be filtered through what *looks* and *feels* nice (or what looks and feels badass in the case of fascism), rather than what actually, materially might work. so, to your point, yeah it's deeply naive and that naivete is why i think it sucks
also there's something deeply fucked about solarpunk's fixation on technology, like it's techno-fetishistic in the same way liberal democracies nowadays imagine technology and science as being able to wipe away all problems and solve all issues, we just need to get Advanced enough to solve climate change and world hunger and everything else. the eradication of capitalism can't meaningfully affect our technologically advanced lives (which we enjoy as a result of extractive hyperviolence inflicted on the global south), we can't just Lose our toys and screens, that would! suck! better to imagine we can all live lives where we can larp as neo-pastoralist farmers without having to engage in any of the backbreaking labor that sustains a lifestyle like that, like we all have fucking cloud seeders and microlight drones and mechs that snip perfectly ripe tropical fruit off the branch to enjoy whenever.
all this to say, as has been mentioned in a post ive seen floating around, solarpunk steals a lot from Afropunk and Indigenous futurist thought and just strips a lot of the Black and brown influences, or reduces it to cute little checkbox-style diversity wins. i've got a game ive been wanting to publish about my general thoughts on this for a hot minute, but thank u for ur question hehe, gave me an opportunity to distill them
people who don’t watch horror movies are SO confident that they know everything there is to know about the genre. like it’s okay to not know things. it’s okay if you don’t like friday the 13th or whatever. i promise you don’t need to make an ass out of yourself on the internet about it
horror is an incredibly diverse genre, because there is potential horror in everything. it’s in nature, it’s in architecture and technology, it’s in human relationships, it’s in folklore, the past, the future, the mundane. there are horror movies from all over the world. it is straight up anti-intellectual to pretend that the handful of B slashers you’ve vaguely heard about comprise the totality of what horror has to offer. If you’re just not interested in horror, or if you dislike certain subgenres of horror, then that’s fine, you’re not obligated to like anything at all. but smugly announcing that you don’t like horror because you dislike a handful of VERY specific non-universal tropes is just as stupid as saying that you hate comedy because you don’t like adam sandler movies.
this is what I mean by anti-intellectualism btw
I don't mean to be rude to you OP, but I want to push back on the idea that slashers/torture porn are also inherently lowbrow. I'll admit that I'm a little biased as I am doing a masters thesis on horror films but here's my soapbox anyway.
One of the earliest examples of the torture porn genre (as much as I dislike that term, I think spectacle horror is more accurate) is Wolf Creek, a 2005 Australian horror film. Wolf Creek is probably one of the most heavily studied films in Australian horror cinema academia, it's a rich text in how it ultilises the Australian Gothic and also for how it plays upon 'stereotypical' images of Australia such as the bushman/the larrikin (this is not the only lens through which it is studied, just the one I remember off the top of my head).
This isn't because Australian doesn't have good horror/other horror worthy of study, The Babadook is an Australian film FFS, but rather because Wolf Creek is very much worthy of it! As much as it is an absolutely brutal watch, it also has a lot going on thematically and within the cultural context it was made.
I can't make this argument as strongly with the Friday series, just because it's not my field, but the first Halloween film also has a lot going on in it's construction of Michael Myers in relation to the contemporaneous (iirc) serial killer panic.
To be clear, there's nothing wrong with disliking certain subgenres of horror (I don't like spectacle horror myself), but that doesn't mean they don't have things going on.
all these excellent books come from some random penguins house?
If you’re using Skype you should dump it and get Discord instead!
Pros:
Cleaner, easier to navigate interface
Free servers for more permanent group chat things (way easier to hop in and out of chats)
You can actually have different nicknames on each server if you want
Is actually well built and doesn’t make your computer yearn for death
Stuff coming down the pipeline soon according to devs:
Video chat
Linux client
Cons:
All your friends aren’t on it
But you can change that
Download it. It’s great and it’s only getting better. It’s aimed at gamers but it has nearly all the functionality of Skype and then some.
Since Discord first became a thing, it has added:
friends lists
group chats
changeable statuses
search function
and a hell of a lot more! Also this is a huge shout out to any of my friends who still use Skype – I don’t use it, I use Discord. Mail me and I’ll shoot you my details :)
Also the audio quality is just way better and more consistent than Skype’s.
Discord uses it’s own servers to host calls instead of relying on a user host like skype :0
A reflective lyric game about death and what your character's funeral might look like.
My next crowdfunding campaign, Build a Burial is now live! We're doing a cross-collab with I'M A TRANS MAN AND I'M HERE TO FUCK (TRANS BODIES ARE SEXY) where backers of both campaigns get both a sticker and a free game!
Build A Burial is about death, character funerals and building your character's coffin. It draws inspiration from real life 'coffin clubs' and craft projects.
my day has fucking sucked. please tell me good things so that I can remember the whole world is not horrible if you would be so kind <3
Because it’s cold here, my dogs have taken to snuggling with me on the bed in the mornings.
