i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.

in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.

But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.

our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.

anyway, happy pride, americans. i’m truly sorry that most of you don’t see the negative impact your nation’s culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and culture’s queer history, don’t accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.

Find me the politician in Cuba who openly, repeatedly and LOUDLY disagree with the central government. Who is the OPPOSITION in the Cuban system? Getting to vote on a plebiscite is nice...but that plebiscite was handed down from the government on high, because Cubans don't choose their representatives, meaning they have no influence on what laws do or don't come up for a vote.

Every single Cuban politician is either a communist or a prisoner. By law. So how WOULD anyone express discontent? Certainly not when you only get one leader your entire life and dissent against the government is outlawed.

I'm not reading all that when your entire argument can have its legs cut out from under it by comparing the number of non-Party members in, say, Vietnam's legislature to the number of third party members in America's, you're fucking delulu. (Or the fact that China has six major political parties, while North Korea has I forget how many.) (Cuba is presumably harder to get real numbers on, since you don't run on a party ticket at all.)

Meanwhile, there are as many forms of people's democracy as there are socialist experiments. "Even" in the Soviet Union--picked because I imagine that's where it would have been the hardest to get into office without at least the blessing of the Communist Party--these candidates weren't picked by party officials in a back room; the party had caucuses and shit. Any number of times, people would pick someone the Party didn't even even recommend and the Party would be like "Right you are; our bad" every time. And then, when these candidates faced their up-down vote of acclimation to actually get into office--the only part of the process I'm sure you've ever heard of, because Western propaganda spun it as them running unopposed in what they allowed you to assume was a "normal" FPTP election--sometimes they'd lose.

More importantly than all of that, though, is that in any socialist state, if you elect someone and then they go and start doing the opposite of what they promised they were going to do when you voted for them, or even just suck at their job--you can recall them. At any time. For any reason. The Balkan SSRs were notorious for how much they did this.

Contrast to America, where legislaturalists have been known to literally switched party from D to R the day after being sworn in, with there being fuck-all the people cold do about it. Yeah, some "democracy" we've got here.

As an oppressed people, we cannot rely on the privileged classes to discover our own interests, but as a minority we also cannot rely on our independent forces to overthrow such powerful systems. A strategic alliance of all oppressed people's is needed to build socialism, whilst autonomous unions of oppressed people are needed to protect ourselves and advocate for our interests within the coalition.

Do not mistake the failures of particular movements in the US for an indication of the general impossibility of such a strategic alliance. The reactionary hegemony is a temporary phenomenon, whilst class struggle is the permanent condition of class society. No movement will appear if we don't build it, but history is on our side.

There appears to be a lot of consternation in liberal circles about why Graham Platner's support endures despite so much available evidence that he's a dudebro scumbucket, and I gotta say I actually think it's almost painfully simple.

Progressives are just doing right back at liberals exactly what liberals have always done to them, and not only do the liberals not seem to recognize their own arguments being flung back at them, but the cognitive dissonance seems to be driving them insane.

Here's a fun experiment: find any liberal pundit writing thinkpieces these days exclaiming all the reasons they think Platner is disqualified from the support of any decent person.

Then go back to 2024 and see what those exact same commentators were saying about Kamala Harris' support for genocide, and how much they contorted any semblance of a moral compass they had to justify NOT treating genocide as a dealbreaker.

Do that and I think you'll figure out that this whole thing is a lot simpler than people are treating it.

Liberals have spent our entire adult lives preaching to us about how morality has to fold in the face of political practicality, how "harm reduction" means "choosing the lesser evil" no matter how bad they are, about how having any moral principles at all just enables fascism. Up to and including telling actual genocide victims that they're morally obligated to support their own extermination at the ballot box.

Well now the democratic tide has turned on several issues that have long been important to progressives and that liberals have long justified opposing (ostensibly) on the grounds that they weren't democratically viable. But now they are.

Now they are, and now the progressives are taking all that "practicality over principle" "lesser evil" shit the liberals have been forcefeeding them for decades and are saying "now it's your turn to take your medicine."

E.g. on their Kamala Harris "genocide ain't so bad" logic, there's basically nothing Graham Platner can do to make himself the greater evil compared to his genocidal opponents. Hitpiece after hitpiece after scandal after scandal, it's never gonna add up to "worse than genocide." It can't.
