people here will be like “be gay do crime” and still think piracy is bad
Honestly i say it depends on the scale. Pirating an indie game? Bad. Stealing art from an independent artist? Very bad. Gonna illegally download Game of Thrones? You have bad taste in tv, but hbo will live. Want to hold Mickey Mouse ransom until Disney pays up? Morally you’ve committed no sin
Does anyone else ever feel “secondhand representation?” Like, “I know this isn’t necessarily for me, but I love it and am so proud of it anyway.” Like Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj makes me so proud for Indian people. One Day At a Time makes me happy for latinx people (and it’s really fucked up that it’s getting canceled.) I’m a black, bisexual woman, so in today’s day and age, I get proud easily because there are multiple avenues of representation for me (Black Panther; Love, Simon; Wonder Woman; Captain Marvel; Even men in black with Tessa Thompson). Idk, like honestly seeing any form of representation that’s not white and male makes me extra hype.
#people that feel this way need to be the ones writing the stories

if you ever feel stupid remember that kodak used to hold almost 90% of all camera sales in the US but fell off the face of the earth because in 1975 they created the first self-contained digital camera which would have been market-breaking but decided to trash the project because they figured that digital photography was a phase that people would grow out of, only to go out of business because they were the only company that wouldn’t commericalize on digital cameras
@iamoutofideas “capitalism promotes innovation!”
Kinda similar to how 3D printing is 40 year old technology, but the reason it’s big now is because the patent finally expired
yes sir! see also: wireless charging
And electric cars
Wait are patents why we don’t have hover boards yet
yes and it’s also why so much medication is not affordable
That’s how you go viral, take note!
As a kid I thought love was boring and when a story had a “love is the answer” message or when a character used love to prevail I thought that was silly and cheesy but now I know it’s the truth. Love is the answer and it transcends space and time and death and fear and doubt and most of all Evil.
Love is the answer and it’s the point. Romantic or familial or friendship, old or new, passionate or familiar, Love in any form, real, patient, forgiving, unselfish Love,
Tht’s the whole point and it is what will save us. Just something to uh. Think about.
unpopular opinion but i think the film and tv industries should have better labor laws even if it makes it harder or impossible to depict certain things
i dont care if it makes it harder to produce game of thrones or whatever, acting should not leave women traumatized
Okay I know this is about acting and people are getting more traction about it (sexuality safety coordinators are a job! yell about them. demand your shows get them) but
Any person who has worked on a set for more than a few years has at least one person they know who died.
Not usually on set, but afterwards. Because we don’t have anyone shutting down production for unsafe practices when “unsafe” means 16 hour days. Or more. For weeks. Finishing a day before hour 12 (not including lunch) is considered an early leave.
I had teachers tell us not to, unless we absolutely had to, take music video gigs because they’ll work you for 24 hours and send you to drive home. And if we had to work that, pull over and nap in our car because multiple people per year fall asleep at the wheel and go over the canyons around LA.
I know you mean acting but please. Don’t forget the crew. We have a shockingly high rate of suicide because these working schedules leave us with no sleep, no time outside of work, and it destroys lives, relationships, and families. Burnout is high. Chronic illness and broken bodies are common. Cocaine use in order to get through a 20 hour day is rampant. Every single one of your reality shows is fueled by cocaine.
The number of days that are scheduled to shoot a feature has shrunk dramatically in the past two decades. Which means longer days.
Netflix shows are notorious for being poorly organized, understaffed, and long days.
There are labor laws but what they do is levy fines. Those fines are either factored into budget, people are bullied into not reporting actual hours, or crew members see them as incentive to take those jobs because more money and cost of living is high. (Also this industry has a crew culture of dick measuring by sticking your wang in a blender and boasting about how many 100 hour weeks you pulled.)
this can be applied for people working in animation as well. Like I know people who work at Pixar and they straight up work 12 hour days and go into work on weekends to meet their deadlines. The incredibles 2 made over a billion dollars and Pixar still cut jobs due to “budget”. The entertainment industry is a business at the end of the day. There here to make money and they are going to do it at the expense of workers because they know no one is going to do anything about it.
This is why I get pissy when people have a go about British TV shows only producing 10-12 episodes per season at most, instead of 24. Do you know why? Because the UK has fucking labour laws.
When I worked on BBC Causalty, as soon as it hit 5pm, everything stopped. The producer/director etc would have a quick meeting to decide if we’d go into overtime or schedule it in later in the week. And I got an extra payslip in the mail for every minute of overtime I did, even though I was paid a weekly rate.
I don’t care if it means producing less content. I don’t care if it means it costs twice as much - if treating your creatives and your crew like shit is needed to make your show, then your show doesn’t deserve to get made.
And that’s aside from the fact that actors are often exploited, neglected, coerced into doing scenes they’re uncomfortable with etc or outright abused by directors for the sake of ~performance.
No art is worth that.
can we like…. talk about what a healthy relationship with technology looks like? not just for us, but for future generations: its super easy for us to accept tech unquestioningly bc many millennials and gen-Zers grew up alongside the growth of tech, and had a naturally evolving level of exposure to it. but what about the 5 year olds with tablets? the 8 year olds with perfectly curated instagrams?? i’m as obsessed with my phone as the rest of us, but can we please stop simply bemoaning how none of us read as much as we were kids and start exploring how all these screens might be affecting the kids growing up right now?
i work in customer service and please know that i am not baby-boomer aggrandizing when i say i have seen so many children, literally toddlers, dead-silent and completely, utterly absorbed in tablets bigger than their heads. i’ve seen a shitton of pre-pubescent girls posing for pictures together, planning their angles and backgrounds, and checking what shots their mom took bc they’re worried “they might look fat.” like. i’m talking 7 year olds. this isn’t meant to be some holier than thou bullshit, this is me being legitimately terrified about a problem i really haven’t seen any of us discuss or even acknowledge
In one of my psychology classes the teacher told us about a study that showed that toddlers nowadays have a hard time learning how to write and do fine motor things because of the skip the stage of learning with their hands and all they do is swipe and click.
oh!! my god!!! that is an incredibly literal/physical symptom of these newfound techno-reliances we’ve formed. a professor of mine referred to it as our “tech fetishization,” this expectation that all updated forms of tech are innately and unquestionably good things. we see technology as an amorphous, abstract concept vs. a substantive influence in our mental, emotional, and physical states but holy shit it really, really is
@ y’all in the notes completely missing the point and thinking this is about millennials turning into the ‘Thomas Edison was a witch!’ or ‘kids these days!’ crowd…
Look, I fucking love technology. I love what the advancements in my lifetime have been able to make possible. The sheer amount of information and communication and creative tools available is incredible, and I often wonder how different my life would be now if I’d grown up with all these things available and accessible. (How many more things would I know how to do? How much more music could I have written? How much more art could I have produced? Could I have started my own businesses sooner? How many more people from how many more places would I know?)
But the things in the above posts are problems. I see plenty of bitching now about the effects that ‘TV / video game babysitting’ had on you - you think handing a 2-year-old a tablet to shut them up isn’t just another incarnation of the same thing?
We bitch about how fucked up algorithms are all over the internet, and you don’t think kids having nearly unmonitored access is a problem? You don’t see a potential for how this could be fucking someone up? Open a YouTube page as a new user (with zero history, cookies, etc.), click on an innocuous video, and let autoplay run for a bit. It gets weird real fast. (Even with filters.)
As difficult as ‘don’t worry about looking like the people in the magazines, they don’t look like that either’ was for us, you don’t think there’s a potential for more damage with social media etc. now? Everybody has access to filters and photoshop etc. The whole ‘influencer’ thing is that ‘anybody can be a star, you can make yourself, you don’t have to wait for a studio etc. to discover you.’ Seven-year-olds obsessing whether they look fat or if their instagrams can compete with some random person who’s edited the shit out of their photos (and they’re not a movie star, just a random person, so it must be real!) is messed up.
Kids coming into schools with lower vocabulary levels because they haven’t heard as many words from people by a certain age - because it’s easier to sit them in front of a pretty, addicting game to keep them occupied and behaving than spend the time interacting with them person-to-person - is messed up.
There are so many amazing tools we have now that are awesome for helping kids learn and grow. (I would have killed to be able to have ‘how to’ videos on YouTube when I was a kid - there were so many things I wanted to learn that if my parents didn’t know or the school / library didn’t have resources on, I was SOL.) But I’d love to see actual conversations about the problems growing up with tech is causing - without it devolving into the usual thinkpieces and comments that do just break it down as ‘tech is bad!’ or ‘tech is fine, ya loser dinosaurs!’ There’s absolutely a healthy balance here somewhere. I just don’t think people are all that invested in finding it.
@quandocoeli - food for thought.

The worst part about science fiction is that you just can’t have magic. The second worst part about science fiction is that this has never stopped anyone before and sci-fi is absolutely rife with magic everywhere you look, you just have to call it something else.
