headcanon Iruka-sensei was the bisexuality awakening for most male shinobis in the village and Tsuande was for the female shinobis
We have not explored including that kkir + naruto and sakura in a sunflowers field official art to fics or art and that's honestly heartbreaking because that art is so WHOLESOME!!!!!!
Kakashi extremely relaxed around all of them, his flak jacket loose and open, not alert, tense or forestalling combats with deadly enemies, letting himself be dragged around by Sakura, who smiles big and brightly at him. Iruka is comfortable enough to straight up not wear his flak jacket at all!! The academy teacher ever so reliable holding their stuff, used to Naruto's surprise hugs attacks and smiling at this little boy who has become his family.
Oh and also Kakashi taking his ninken with them!! Ninken that are just as calmly enjoying this moment. Just walking with them, looking around. With the little detail of Uhei at Iruka's side, the ninken are familiar with him!!
It's such cute official art, I love it
It's very interesting that in the scene where we catch the Third Hokage reproaching Kakashi for that mission where Iruka got hurt, when Iruka appears Hiruzen does give him a slight scold about being too compassionate could endanger himself and other shinobis but after Iruka mentions he wanted to talk to him about it, Hiruzen is quick to dismiss it and be all "don't worry, for your next mission-".
And we can joke all about Iruka being his favorite unofficial kid, but it is a very telling detail that Hiruzen doesn't see this as a problem or a career-ending failure or a non-shinobi trait, especially when you remember that when he found Orochimaru experimenting with fellow shinobi, Hiruzen was ready to fight but couldn't, because it was Orochimaru. He couldn't bring himself to kill the enemy because that was his dear student and we have seen the consequences of letting Orochimaru flee after that confrontation.
Once a mutual of mine (hi Lex!) mentioned that Sarutobi is a good person but because of being good person he's a bad leader, having so much hope and faith that when he recognizes something is bad he still will It it happend because he has faith it will turn different, for better or worse he's 'compassionate''. So, no wonder he is so quick to support Iruka when he tells him he wants to teach at the academy when he sees that Iruka takes a mission failure (being too compassionate, a personality trait that could be deadly in the field, that is not 'proper of a shinobi') instead of changing it Iruka embraces it and uses it in his favor to serve in other ways. Iruka does not repress it until it dies or loathe himself for his weaknesses or grows bitter, he recognizes it's not suited to always be in the field, yet embraces it and decides to teach.
Hiruzen not being able to take down Orochimaru when he could at the beginning of all and as an audience seeing the many terrible things that led to vs and him pushing Iruka in the direction of Naruto's path once Iruka was set on teaching because he has faith Iruka will reach Naruto the second himself is ready and as an audience seeing the many beautiful thingss that led to are both sides of Hiruzen's (very faulty) faith.
We talk about Hiruzen seeing Hashirama in Iruka but maybe he also saw himself.
Kakashi getting chewed out by the Hokage because Iruka got hurt in a mission he was the captain of I just know when he and Iruka first kissed the next day he was thinking "Sandaime is gonna kill me"
iruka does kakashi a solid and goes to one (1) ribbon cutting in the hidden cloud village representing the hatake administration during it's first year. and suddenly he’s the first lady of konoha.
it stems from a game of telephone played among diplomats and shinobi alike, whispered behind flutes of sparkling wine and event pamphlets.
he's a trusted figure in konoha, gaara tells kankuro as iruka gives the keynote speech, he's important to naruto, and kakashi values and holds him dear.
he's someone the rokudaime holds dear, is what kankuro tells a mist shinobi at the open bar as they watch iruka mingle with the new daimyo of the land of wind. he trusts him deeply.
only for that shinobi, now tipsy, to tell his comrade the rokudaime cares for him deeply.
and his comrade, just as tipsy, jokes, oh? they're lovers? though her affect is not quite sarcastic enough for the passing and aged ears of the tsuchikage, who takes this whisper as fact.
and the tsuchikage, ever the traditionalist but trying his best to be open minded, takes lovers to mean married and as such asks one of his aides to prepare a newly wed care package for iruka, a customary gift in his village, to be delivered upon his return to the land of fire.
the raikage catches wind of this, and refusing to be outdone in his own village, hastily has his people bring out a case of their most expensive spirits and proposes a toast to konoha and kakashi and iruka's future. may the bond between our villages be as strong and devoted as that between you both! which iruka accepts graciously, albeit confused about his phrasing.
things continue to snowball from there-- because why else would the hokage send some random teacher abroad to such an important event, and with such a large entourage of assistants and anbu guards? what, other than a plethora of experience gained from a lifelong dedication to teaching, as well as astute and compelling ideas on education and child care, could this middling but charming chuunin possibly provide? especially at a ribbon cutting for a new academy and the unveiling of an international student exchange program between the villages (that iruka all but spearheaded himself)? the only explanation was that they were married and this was one of his spousal duties, of course!
the event comes to an end and the mizukage invites iruka to tour their new medicinal gardens in the spring.
.... the tsuchikage reminds him to remain steadfast and loyal in his new duties and to serve his hokage well.
.... gaara congratulates him with an all too earnest smile.
.... and the raikage hands him a tin of ointment.
for pain and pleasure, the raikage tells him, which makes iruka think for just one moment that he might be hitting on him, until the man adds, which I'm sure Kakashi will appreciate.
and that fills iruka with all sorts of thoughts involving kakashi alone and then kakashi with the hulking man before him and-- well, as enticing as that was, it makes his chest swirl with an unpleasant heat that he recognizes as jealousy.
iruka leaves with the tin held tightly in his hand and arrives in konoha none the wiser. he walks into kakashi's office and finds him surrounded by flowers and gifts and stacks of letters, a teasing smile on his face.
it still doesn't click for iruka-- he thinks he's missed some celebration, or misremembered kakashi's birthday, somehow. but his first thought isn't to ask or question them. his first thought is in the palm of his hand.
iruka slams down the tin on kakashi's desk. are you involved with the raikage? he asks. and kakashi, to his credit, blinks twice before the smile on his face shatters, distorting into something shocked and distraught.
kakashi doesn't get to answer iruka either-- instead, naruto bursts in through the window and shouts: YOU TWO GOT MARRIED?
Was doing some cleaning today and ended up thinking a lot about Iruka. Honestly, some parts of his personality is such a perfect blend of Minato and Kushina. Like, he's generally calm and steady like Minato, but if someone actually manages to piss him off, he gets just as fiery and relentless as Kushina….
…. And since KakaIru has been my favorite ship lately, looking at it from that perspective, you can kind of understand why Kakashi liked him from the start. This chuunin with a mind of his own who knows exactly how to stand his ground. It just makes so much sense.
Not to mention we still have the Retsuden series.
I really like the headcanon that Kakashi has wolf or dog teeth, so I think it would be adorably funny if his love language is playfully nibbling. :D Just imagine a scene where Kakashi is lying on Iruka while Iruka strokes him, and Kakashi randomly bites him. Iruka yelps and tells him not to do that again — but after a while, Kakashi bites his hand again, and Iruka just sighs heavily, jokingly calling him a bad boy, while Kakashi sits there with that “>:3” kind of face
naruto interrupting kakashi and iruka's dates/moments is very fun and cute but we're sleeping on konohamaru crashing their moments for YEARS
Your classic KKIR Matchmaking AU but it isn't classic at all since Naruto is attempting to set Iruka and Kakashi up, unaware that in the meantime, and to his horror, Konohamaru has been trying to set Iruka up with Ebisu of all people for way longer, and it's a complete mess.
And like many others of Konohamaru and Naruto's squabbles, Konohamaru aces each try unlike anything Naruto does.
Naruto invites Iruka to eat ramen with him and Kakashi for lunch? Iruka informs him that Ebisu and his genin team dropped by earlier with a bento for him! Naruto asks Asuma to invite Kakashi and Iruka for drinks? Konohamaru already asked Asuma to invite Ebisu and unlike Kakashi who declined the invitation, Ebisu accepted!! On a rainy day, he hurries Kakashi towards the Academy knowing it's the time Iruka is used to leave work so Kakashi can offer his scarf for the cold but sees from afar how Konohamaru whispers something to Ebisu's ear and pushes him in Iruka's direction, then Ebisu covers them both with his umbrella!?
But most often it's not even his fault, it's Kakashi's!
Naruto points at an expensive Seals book to Kakashi mentioning how Iruka has been saving money for it but still hasn't gotten around to buying it? The man hums and buys the Icha Icha volume next to the seals book because 'It has a different special limited edition cover'!!! Naruto mentions to Kakashi that Iruka likes the hot springs and that he saw a good deal for two people at a hot springs resort, and maybe Kakashi should go with Iruka? Kakashi does tell Iruka but doesn't invite him!!!!
He decided to change his approach and take a more active role. So he gives Iruka chocolates for him to give to Kakashi, what does Kakashi do? Just reply with "Ah, I don't really like sweets". Naruto takes the time and effort to write a good mission report so Kakashi doesn't make Iruka have another headache at the mission desk? Kakashi forgets to hand it in until 2 weeks later.
One day, when the school hours are over but the teachers haven't left the Academy yet, he requests a mission for Kakashi to take a flower bouquet and go to Iruka's classroom, where when Kakashi arrives, he finds by mere coincidence a bunch of candles lighting up the place, two bowls of ramen at the teacher's desk, and Iruka enters a little after shocked at the scene before his eyes.
It's the perfect romantic set-up, right? No way this can fail, right?
WRONG. Kakashi destroys all his hard work, muttering an awkward "Uh. Well, sensei, I'll leave these here. See ya", red-faced, sets the flowers next to the two bowls before disappearing in a bunch of leaves.
('Goddamn it! why does Kakashi-sensei gotta be such a weirdo!?')
Oh, and let's not talk about when one of Naruto's attempts seems to be working, Konohamaru must have a sixth sense or know a forbidden jutsu to just know and interrupt Kakashi and Iruka's moments.
Naruto doesn't notice how following all of Kakashi's numerous 'fumbles' Iruka smiles entertained, offers hidden invitations for Kakashi to linger, rolls his eyes with affection, sighs fondly exasperated, leans closer to the copy-nin, or blushes back.
Only sighs when once more, walking with Iruka, Ebisu followed by Konohamaru, the jonin offers to take Iruka's bag for him. At least the guy has manners enough to not walk beside him when Naruto is giving him a not-so-concealed glare.
Things aren't working like the stuff in the pervert-sage's novels do!
Naruto has the subtlety of a brick, meaning that at Konohamaru's slightest and last offence he goes straight to Kakashi babbling about how he needs to ‘man up’ and stop with his 'forced and cringe' weird lazy nonchalant romance love interest attitude or Iruka will leave him for Ebisu, believe it!
Kakashi was equally annoyed, amused, and embarrassed. Very close to clarifying that he and Iruka have been seeing each other for a year before Naruto came back to the village, so he doesn't need his wingman talents or tips or anything of Naruto in his personal business. However, his student's words communicating the absolutely valuable new information of Ebisu's recent interest in Iruka and the elite tutor's advances, do pique the seasoned strategist's own interest and tick off the tiniest competitive part of him, a determination only seen during mission slips when replying with an unexpected "...Okay. What's the plan then?"
But if anybody were to ask Kakashi he would say he's just bored and humoring his student. Doesn't has anything to do at all with the fact Iruka and him have danced around each other for months and never made clear what they are.
Naruto lets himself believe that maybe. Just maybe. It's not a lost battle from now on.
Idea where ever since Naruto graduated and became a genin, other fellow shinobi have had to deal with his antics. Each time they come across Iruka, usually at the mission desk, they complain to him about how he should be educating him better and to control "his kid".
Izumo and Kotetsu have to restrain Naruto at the same time one day and whine the whole time they go for drinks with Iruka about how their muscles and entire bodies hurt and how the hell was Iruka able to keep such a kid in check for YEARS.
Iruka dismisses them because surely it's because they're just not used to the orange ball of energy that is Naruto, or that it was just one day in particular that Naruto might've been a bit more hard-headed than usual (he will check with him over ramen tomorrow, just to make sure)
Anko mentions casually how "much of a brat just like you" Naruto is to Iruka, and goes on and on to recall all the fond memories she had of Iruka when he was a little rascal and Iruka just laughs back but does have to defend his boy and point out that she was just as much of a brat if not worse
There's also a day in the mission desk where Kakashi and Team 7 are unexpectedly quiet after a mission, and Kakashi drops dead (well, not dead, but very close) on Iruka's desk. And knowing he doesn't like hospitals, Iruka has to bring him to his apartment and after 24 hours Kakashi wakes up and all he says is a dry and shaky, "I need you". Only to go back to sleep again.
Iruka's face burns red he has to repeat over and over that he probably means he needs help. Help with Naruto. Like everyone else. Especially with how Naruto is with Sasuke and Sakura. Those three are a mess; anyone would need someone else. To help them, that is. Yes. Of course.
If he and Kakashi arrange a little system of "shared custody" where they find themselves alone at the end of the day here and there, drinking or eating together at Ichiraku or one of their apartments, it's nobody's business. Iruka is just helping.
He really, really believed people were exaggerating because they're not used to Naruto's personality and push all the wrong buttons. Until the Fifth Hokage, Lady Tsunade, jokes that Iruka might get a medal of honor for still keeping Naruto in check til this day.
Years go by and most of the village in considerable more familiar with Naruto's antics. Tho! Any new faces he meets will eventually ask him a worn but fond "HOW."
Iruka briefly wonders if he maybe made the third Hokage deal with something similar during his prankster years or being the Hokage gave him the privilege to not hear anything like this.
He remembers how usually he pulled one of his many, many pranks and glitter traps for ANBUs he'd notice the dead chakra zones that were an ANBU or two following him around to stop him from any trouble.
...Yeah people definitely complained about him the way they do now about Naruto.
(At some random meeting)
Random diplomat 1: "I'm surprised that Lord Rokudaime didn't just kick you out of here or something. Or have someone from his envoy do it for him."
Random diplomat 2: "What?! Why? I haven't done anything wrong."
Random diplomat 1: "You just spent an hour flirting with his husband. I think anyone would take offense to that."
Random diplomat 2: "Shit. I didn't know. Should I apologize? I don't want to start anything. I'm already on a tight rope with Lord Kazekage."
Random diplomat 1: "I think you are ok. Just stay away from the teacher and you'll be fine."
Random diplomat 2: "....."
Random diplomat 1: "Relax. I'm just jesting. To be honest, he probably was just amused. The Rokudaime is an understanding man. You aren't the first person to make that mistake and probably won't be the last."
Random diplomat 2: "Jest all you want. The truth of the matter is that I should have known who the man is. How did I miss that in all our briefings?"
