I read a comment today that reminded me of something that made me feel a little sad.
KakaIru has been the most dominant Kakashi ship for over 20 years (at least on AO3 and in Japan). But in the past few months I've started seeing comments like "I know no one ships it, but...", or "congrats to the three people who still remember it" or that "it's a bit controversial, but...". As someone who has been on this ship for literally decades now, I am not sure why it feels like there is a need to...almost defend yourself?...for liking this ship.
There is a reason KakaIru remained strong even after Naruto finished. They work. They have chemistry. And it is very clearly stated in novel materials they are both bachelors who live alone. Neither of them have any canon attachments. There are no major age gaps or power dynamics that might make people uncomfortable. I don't see any reason to find this ship to be problematic. Frankly, most of the comments I've seen bitching about KakaIru are all invariably from so called "rival ship" fans and I don't see the point of drinking haterade.
So please, don't let anyone let you think you are not valid for liking KakaIru. Especially when KakaIru is canon to the merchandising department, lol.

Natsume's just an ordinary kid, except he can see spirits just like his grandma Reiko could. Reiko, though, used to bully the spirits, and bound them to her will in the "Book of Friends." Now that Natsume has inherited this book, a never-ending stream of spirits is coming after him. With the help of a spirit "cat" (who really just wants Natsume to die so he can have the book), Natsume spends his days dissolving the contracts that bind the spirits and trying not to get killed.

But it's not just his blind spot-- that's the side with the sharingan. kakashi's greatest strength and his greatest weakness. the physical manifestation of the guilt and love and grief he's carried since it was given to him as a kid. the most human and vulnerable part of him. and iruka (nurturer, bleeding heart, will of fire personified) constantly occupying that space except for the times when kakashi feels rejected by him or when iruka's in mortal danger/when the sharingan needs to strictly be a weapon...........................
there’s something beautiful about a ship surviving decades of changing fandom spaces. kakairu was there in old forums, doujin circles, fanfiction archives.. and somehow they’re still here.
people calling kakairu an ‘old ship’ as an insult will never stop being funny to me, because surviving over 20 years of fandom culture is genuinely impressive.
