Between the nothingburger and the everything bagel, there is the somewhat sandwich.

I like to think of you as a Magical, Interesting, Lethal Foe. A MILF, even
yes, yes…. the greatest MILF of all time!! finally getting the respect i deserve around here
heartwarming: when the conductor fainted, this brave audience member was able to safely land the orchestra
*evil optometrist voice* One day theyll see. They'll all see.
They don’t make em like this anymore *posts what is clearly a photo of your exact childhood bedroom*
I just finished showing the entire ASOUE Netflix series to my wife, and now a solemn duty weighs on my heart. I have to briefly commit fandom heresy and confess something I’ve held to be true since I originally finished the series a few months before she and I started dating: I think the Netflix adaptation is the best version of the story.
I know, I know. I just keep thinking about Daniel Handler and the creative team writing the show together in his home while he cooks dinner (as described in the real-world Incomplete History of Secret Organizations book which serves as a ‘making of’ history for the first two seasons) and all the ways Handler course-corrected, making specific narrative elements clearer, including visibly diverse casting and much more gender- and orientation-inclusive writing, especially considering how Certain Henchpeople were originally portrayed, and I don’t know, it all just… works for me. I adore the books, I even love the original movie adaptation and adore its soundtrack, which we used a track from during my wedding ceremony, but the Netflix show feels like the ideal iteration of the story—the version Handler was able to work on after seeing what did and didn’t work in the previous incarnations. much like Douglas Adams continually retelling the story of the Hitchhiker’s Guide and adding or changing things every time it changes media formats, I think ASOUE just sort of naturally changes and improves the more it grows and the longer it lasts, so. there you have it.
Yeah so admittedly as someone who didn't read the whole series (just the books my school library had and the odd one I borrowed off a friend; I think in the end I got through about 9 or 10 of them including the first and last few)
I definitely preferred the TV series and I'm glad that was the medium that let me get through the whole story. That being said, I'm glad they both exist, because it means there's an element of choice. For people who prefer loose ends to be tied up, mysteries solved and a more optimistic ending overall (that's me hello) there's the TV series. For people who prefer a bleaker ending with a lot of plot elements still wreathed un mystery, there's still the book series. They just coexist really well.
I completely agree! all the various iterations of the story are in conversation with one another and I think that makes them really special. I love that all these different versions exist and that there's so many ways to engage with the story and the characters.

They just don't schism like they used to
reading ASoUE as a teenager before I knew I was a lesbian and then watching the show now is so weird because I went from feeling sorry for Jerome Squalor and disliking Esmé for abandoning him to the exact opposite situation where I’m actively planning on marrying his wife
as something of an update, as it turns out I did not end up marrying Esmé Squalor.
I did, however, end up being proposed to by—and saying yes to!—a perfectly wonderful woman to whom I have been married for a year now, and with whom I am currently watching the Netflix ASoUE series, her for the first time and me for the third. as you might imagine, this felt noteworthy enough to break this tumblr’s years-long silence. I hope everyone is well.
I probably ought to mention that one of the songs that played during the wedding ceremony was The Letter That Never Came, from the original ASoUE movie.

*lemony snicket voice* police cars say ‘protect and serve’ for the same reason a box of dry, unflavoured rice cakes might say ‘delicious treat’. rice cakes are not a delicious treat, nor are the police there to protect and serve, but if you are unfamiliar with either you’re likely to believe what you’re told.
