Reblogging this again bc I can’t stop angrily thinking about how there should be laws in place so that when a company sells a product or service there is either a cap on how many years they can keep charging subscription for it or they have to name a price they decide the product is worth and either the buyer pays that upfront or by those weekly/monthly instalments. At least put laws in place on what legally qualifies as a subscription service.

1. The litter box rumor was started by a transphobic politician for the purposes of inciting transphobic hysteria, and the fact that it is still being repeated and garnered as political evidence is a very bad sign.

2. Trans people and neurodivergent people make up the lion’s share of furries. Like an unbelievable percentage. I think I saw a stat once saying up to 80% of furries are trans. I don’t have a source but wow, I really rethought the inherent transphobia in furry-hating and the significance of trans identity within the development of furry culture.

3. “Texas lawmakers have used the claims, which have since been debunked, to push for education savings accounts or school vouchers, which would give families taxpayer funds to go toward private-school tuition.” Lmfao using furries to destroy public education was not on my bingo card 🙃

4. It’s easy for them to demonize anything that could be linked to being kink or alternative culture adjacent because it’s even further out of the mainstream. This is why kink belongs at pride. This is why LGBTQ community purity culture infighting is fucking idiotic and regressive. Can y’all finally accept that people with neopronouns and kinks and subculture identities are part of this community, or are you too busy calling them cringe?

6. I’m not a furry, but this form of play pretend was EXTREMELY important to me as a kid. I formed virtually all of my friendships around it. It shaped who I was. I’m actually legitimately heartbroken for these kids. Kids are already punished for so much arbitrary BS, why the fuck should we take away yet another harmless and constructive behavior. I hate this.

I want to emphasize that this is yet another law that relies on teachers to enforce. Every single person who works with kids is extremely aware of just how common this kind of pretend is. Kids pretend to be animals, like, constantly. They'll drop it into random conversations and interactions out of nowhere, and they'll do this up into pretty high ages, because it's just, like, normal and natural and part of being a kid.

I don't think anyone can say exactly how this is gonna play out in practice, but it's not gonna be every teacher suddenly complying with some dumbass impractical nonsense law. The vast majority of kids will keep playing pretend, because trying to enforce this on them would be deeply silly and a complete waste of time, energy, and good will at best, and an utter fucking nightmare at worst (I honestly cannot imagine a more effective way to get a group of kids to want me actually literally dead than policing their pretend play like this).

The law itself is still dangerous, and I think this is something that will be weaponized against queer and neurodivergent kids- especially by conservative teachers, admin, and parents in middle and high schools- far more than anyone else. Don't waste your energy grieving for the 6 year olds who almost certainly will not have their Bluey (or whatever) roleplay disrupted. Focus on the kids who are actually being targeted by this.

sometimes all u need to do is take one second to say "(yeah this is a bit)" if someone is genuinely asking because they genuinely can't tell, and then you can continue with the bit. i just feel like refusing to acknowledge someone saying "i cant tell if youre joking or not" and you just continue, or even say, "im not joking" then you're not being very funny, you're just being kind of mean, i think.

obviously there is nuance to this and if you know someone really well sometimes going in harder on the bit will make them get that it's a bit and that's fine if you know them. but just be mindful, yknow? not everyone can pick up on stuff like that, and pushing harder on a bit by saying "im serious" when someone asks if you're joking or not can be harmful in some situations.

This blog is down approximately 80%, which doesn’t affect me other than as an annoyance (as this is a hobby and @okayto is small-ish) but the issue undoubtedly hurts others.

Below are instructions for turning it off. You have to do it individually–it doesn’t matter if a blog you follow turns it off, you’ll still be affected unless you do the same.
