A conversation I don’t think yall are ready for yet is that you can love a character sooooo much and relate to them and see yourself in them but at the end of the day they’re still fake and that’s why someone else’s take on them or headcanon about them isn’t a direct message about you or insult to your identity. If your identity is so wrapped up in a character that you can’t distinguish between reality and fiction, then you are the problem. Not some random person online who interprets the character differently than you.

I cannot tell you how it felt to talk to a guy who was basically the face of my muse for many years. I wish I could have gotten more out but I was going to start crying if I stayed longer at the autograph line. My wife @persisting had to recount what he said, a little, because of the ringing in my ears. I could have had like, so many more minutes with him (he was taking his time with everyone) but I couldn't say more. I hope he didn't think I was being rude! But I think he saw the terror in my eyes, haha.

All I can remember is that he was stoked to know that we associated this classic rock album for Sammy. It made my heart sing. Some small part of what I gave to Sam, I got to give to his actor.

We were pushed through at the photograph line pretty quickly. He was wonderful even then. We joked about him being tall and he was like SORRY >:( and I cannot believe he's still upright after three days of this stuff??? How??? I'm barely alive and I was there just to see him, that place is a maze.

When I gave up on the show mid-season 4, it was because I felt the focus was shifting away from the reason I was watching it: spooky stories about two loving brothers having feelings and getting whumped. The fandom changed overnight. It felt hostile in a way it wasn't before, for a pretty obvious reason . (I have since seen more seasons and that shift has not happened yet, thankfully. The fandom, however... holy shit. Yikes!!! It's not even just fans of That Pairing, even!)

I am a "bibro", I guess? I love Dean and his actor, don't get me wrong! (They kind of belong to the wife.) But Sam was my boy. He was the same age as me, give or take a month. Jared was only a year older than us both. We were navigating strange new worlds together, I felt. And last year, stuck at a toxic job to keep the rent payment going, my health fraying (both mental and physical), feeling further and further away from myself, my wife suggested we re-watch Supernatural. She'd seen some clips on RedNote/XHS and was falling in love again. I wrote for the first time in years. I reconnected with my muse, so to speak.

I will also say this: Jared is not the things you read about him online. He has had struggles, but he's turned that into advocacy for mental health. He has had a few messy moments publicly (yeah I know about the bar fight, don't @ me), which he has apologized for thoroughly. (Though both he and Jensen have been Karens about companies on Xitter, except so have I, because sometimes it's the only way to get things done at times... so I can't really throw stones there, eh?)

He is not a MAGAt; he does not have a tattoo that encourages or glorifies gun use. He is married to a lovely learnèd Los Angeline who would have keelhauled him before marrying him if he was really that way. He knows a little bit about everything. He loves Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid (so I have a captive audience one day for my historical novel, got it!). When his hair is short and he has a beard it gives me some serious Gender Envy.

I don't know Jared personally and likely never will. I understand some of this is parasocial beautification, compounded by nostalgia. But he is giving his energy to fans when he does not need to. Whatever he is like privately, he is well-mannered and kind to a 43 year old woman who is about to burst into tears in his autograph line. I hope I can see him again in the future and be a little more coherent this time.

anyway, unrelated to any of my previous ranting; i have permission from the friend who invited us to say that this friday i was privileged enough to spend the day at skywalker ranch. if you’re not familiar with skywalker ranch, it’s where skywalker sound essentially is? you can read about it here but the short version is that this is the place where most of hollywood does its final sound work. timing, final ADR, foley effects, everything like that: it’s all there. it’s also george lucas’s office, when he’s working on something. it’s ALSO a fully functional self contained ranch with beef cattle, honey, and orchards, set up in these gorgeous hills full of wildlife and greenery. there’s an incredible reference library full of books and things on thousands of topics. you can see more pictures here! (i don’t have any of my own that i can share, as they’re very understandably strict about photography. aside from the fact that there are film projects being worked on on site, there’s a lot of incredible original art around the place and there are security concerns. we signed NDAs and what i’m discussing here i’ve checked in with the person who invited us about to make sure it’s all cool!)

anyway, that experience alone was really incredible. i haven’t had a lot of chances to genuinely enjoy california’s wildernesses, and it’s so different from the carolina and virginia mountains i’m used to. we saw tons of deer (including twin fawns!) and a jackrabbit and so many birds i can’t even name them all. i was told that getting to come out to skywalker to finish up a project is seen as kind of like a breath of fresh air, a vacation while you work, by industry people. you stay on site while you work in these state of the art engineering suits, and the buildings are all rustic mountain retreat style but also full of cool original movie posters and props (a pane of glass between me and obi-wan’s episode 4 lightsaber, and we definitely found the holy grail.)

the coolest part, though, aside from getting to see our friend (they’re my wife’s longtime childhood bff) was that we were there at the right time to watch a first screening of the wild robot in one of the best sound theaters in the world. and you guys, the movie is beautiful. it’s by the director of lilo and stitch and how to train your dragon, and it has the same sweet but grounded tone as the iron giant. it’s one of those films where you’re gonna cry all the way through (i mostly did, which the people actually working on the film were extremely kind about haha.) the backgrounds are all digitally hand painted and gorgeously textured; there’s no trace of AI in this movie except for the fictional robot herself. the soundtrack is incredible, the cast is stellar, the art and styling are just lovely. you guys are going to love this movie i promise i’m not being paid to say this!

anyway, this was a really magical experience for me during a time when i haven’t had a lot of magic. i’m trying to tell myself that it goes to show how little we can really predict about life in general. one week i’m still job hunting after yet another tech layoff, and still trying to get my body back into cooperative shape after months in the hospital this exact time last year. the next week, i get to do something like this just based on chance and the generous trust of other people. the next time i feel lost or when unemployment depression creeps in, i’ll remember this, and the dozens of other experiences yet to come. it’s hard and scary out here for so many reasons, but sometimes something really cool will happen, and you get a new lifelong memory to keep, just for you, 💕

We did @snowlikeash ‘s birthday downtown this week with our friends Jess and Chris*, and it was really cool and sweet, and ended with a bathroom full of gorgeous drunk girls who’d been rooting for Mexico screaming happy birthday at her and telling us both how beautiful we are. I’ve been shocked since we moved here how happy Los Angeles makes us both. I never expected it to fit us as well as it does. It kind of is one of the best places I’ve ever lived. 💕
