“why are you, as someone in their 30s, still on tumblr” oh so you think you’re gonna be normal when you’re my age? you think you’re gonna be CURED?? you think the witches’ curse will have been lifted by then?? cmon now
one thing fandoms love to do is invent something and then get mad at people for not agreeing that it happened
hey guys fun fact! you will never know an actor's true inner self. you will never know if they are secretly in love with a costar (unless you are Tom Holland and that costar is Zendaya I guess?) they aren't often saints, but neither are we, so whatever!
you cannot seriously read smoke signals and tea leaves about living people. expending your energy making up fantasies and then acting like these fantasies are actually reality and harassing people over them NOT buying into it is actually kind of frightening!
have you never had a friend before or something?? or a coworker that kind of annoyed you but you were still nice to them?? do you even know what healthy boundaries are??? good god. PLEASE touch grass.
i didn't believe that people could induce themselves into AI psychosis but I have now Seen It All.
how are you gonna be 31 and posting fandom content bro leave it to the teenagers
People 10 and 20 years older than me are writing your favorite fanfics, and drawing your favorite characters. You'd have no fandom without the people you think are 'too old' to have hobbies.
hey anon how old are the people wrote the shows and music and movies and books you like. also do you think you won't age? quickly now
wait so you like problematic yaoi?
lets take a moment to think about this one critically
asking people who say stuff like "proshits" & hide anon to think critically is like asking a fish to fly or a slug to sing, but that's what makes it such a good burn
imagine you have a movie with oscar isaac and john boyega and people fixate on adam driver instead. this actually happened
You do not have to perform canon. You do not have to respect canon. But you have to acknowledge it is the baseline of reality for everyone else outside your general sphere, as shitty as it may be to you.
Your pairing isn't "canon". The people whose ship you hate -- their pairing also isn't "canon". Rumors and behind the scenes things can inform your "fanon", but what is on the screen/page is the baseline "reality".
Your headcanon is not universal. It is not "the truth". It is not something you should harass people about and they shouldn't harass you.
Yes, canon can be "broken". Plans can be put aside. Queers will be baited. What we are left with is what we choose to make of it. But we often discard what we watched/read for our truth instead*, which takes away from the communal experience.
* You can joke about this! I do! But I also fundamentally keep in mind the actual canon. To change something you must understand it first.
(Also being told to read or watch actual source material rather than vibes from a Tiktok is not an -ism. You think a rich, neurotypical person told you that? Really? In this economy?)
I bet those astronauts are pretty excited to be the farthest from Earth anybody's ever been. You might even say they're over the moon about it
man supernatural might be bad but also ill be damned if thats not the most american show ever. like theres movies and tv that've tried to be this american but 99% have failed. you watch a particularly good episode of supernatural and suddenly you feel the hours of highway winds against your skin and theres more asphalt road than livable terrain for miles and you eat the best meal of your life at a pit stop and you havent gone to church since you were a kid but you still think about praying sometimes and you split a 6 pack with someone you love and a few too many people around you have guns and the land around you is so big when youre right in the center of it you feel like it could swallow you up and you know for a fact theres an unimaginable amount of mythology just beneath the surface. and then you watch the next episode where sam kills paris hilton or something
people who don’t watch horror movies are SO confident that they know everything there is to know about the genre. like it’s okay to not know things. it’s okay if you don’t like friday the 13th or whatever. i promise you don’t need to make an ass out of yourself on the internet about it
horror is an incredibly diverse genre, because there is potential horror in everything. it’s in nature, it’s in architecture and technology, it’s in human relationships, it’s in folklore, the past, the future, the mundane. there are horror movies from all over the world. it is straight up anti-intellectual to pretend that the handful of B slashers you’ve vaguely heard about comprise the totality of what horror has to offer. If you’re just not interested in horror, or if you dislike certain subgenres of horror, then that’s fine, you’re not obligated to like anything at all. but smugly announcing that you don’t like horror because you dislike a handful of VERY specific non-universal tropes is just as stupid as saying that you hate comedy because you don’t like adam sandler movies.
this is what I mean by anti-intellectualism btw
Oh my GOD, this person talking to OP... seriously uncool, TERMINALLY uncool. I'm not big on slashers myself but if you think That's It, I feel bad for you. There are some horror movies that are a treat for the eyes, some that are fun and sloppy and campy, some that make you stay awake because it broke your heart. It's a huge genre! There is something for everyone!
People can handle evil characters(for the most part--usually they twist their behavior and water it down) but people really can't handle good characters that lose their head or lose themselves and have a moment of fallen grace. Fandom has shown this time and time again. They really look at them as worse than the initial evil.
related but tangential. there's a really strong unexamined belief throughout a lot of fandom -- and population outside of fandom, but we're talking about fandom here -- that what you do and say during your worst moments is who you really are.
And the assumptions underlying this, more or less, break down to:
Everybody is secretly bad deep down. They're born that way (no, this is not original sin, wdym, it's just an Honest and Realistic assessment of human nature!) and have to be taught to cover it up through childhood with facades of politeness. Everybody is lying all the time by pretending to be better or nicer than they really are, and this facade takes active effort to maintain. When the effort drops and the facade slips, the true underlying rottenness shows through.
All actions taken are rational and reasoned, at all times. Lying is always a deliberate, purposeful action meant to advance a person's aims and goals. There is never any reason to lie except to make yourself look good. Therefore, any good or nice statement or action may be a lie, but any bad or harmful statement or action must be true.
Ergo: anything a person (or a character) says or does when in states of emotional extremity, overwhelming grief, incapacitating pain, exhaustion, illness, head injury, is Peeling Back the Facade of Goodness to reveal the True Rottenness Underneath. So not only are you actually as evil as the evil character, you're also a liar.
This is, of course, utter nonsense. But an amazing number of people seem to believe it.
i hope you write (i hope we both write)

The Darkening Knight
at some point in your life you will be boiling fruit, water, sugar, and lemon juice in a pot to make a syrup or jam. the instructions will tell you to simmer for a certain amt of time. your timer will go off and you will look at the pot and go, "hm, this doesn't look thick enough. maybe i'll let it go for another 10 minutes." this is the devil speaking. it's only so liquid right now because it is at boiling point. it will thicken when it cools down. learn from the follies of my youth and do not let this happen to you
at some point in your life you will be making a sauce or a stew in which you need to add cornstarch to thicken it. and you will prepare a slurry of starch in cold water and think "this looks like way too little starch to thicken this amount of liquid." this is the devil speaking. cornstarch instantly polymerizes at 95°C and if you add too much it will turn into an impossibly thick goop.
at some point in your life you will be making some sort of cream based dessert that requires gelatin to thicken it. and you will soak some gelatin sheets in water and think "this is too few gelatin sheets for this amount of cream." this is the devil speaking. it will thicken in the fridge and if you add too much you will end up with milk jelly
at some point in your life you will be baking cookies. you will take the sheet out after twelve minutes as the recipe instructs and the cookies will still be glistening and soft. "these don't seem cooked enough," you will think to yourself, "i should place them back into the oven until their edges are nice and golden." this is the devil talking. this is how you get dry, overdone cookies. the cookies will continue to bake on the warm sheet for several more minutes and then harden up after sitting on a rack for a while. trust the process. trust the process.
