A/N: inspiration struck just in time for valentine’s day! this one’s for @soka-writes-things <3 thank you for your support always and for your patience, this took a while :’) <3 this is technically a spin-off to class is now in session. i hope you’ll enjoy all the meta references xD

Every year, the university would host a handful of events, mainly for the freshmen to meet new people and explore the campus. Many of the older students still like to attend, though; the university does know how to throw a party, after all. You’ve been looking forward to it for months, and even pitched an idea to your faculty to make it a costume party. To your delight, everyone was immediately on board. 

Luckily, the organisation went without a hitch, and everyone even pitched in for food and decor. Since the event would become more of a party than anything else, the university would allow for it to still be held in one of the bigger halls, with the condition that there’d be an assigned group of people who’d stay and clean up afterwards. So the faculty held two raffles: one for prizes and one for the clean-up crew. The latter was announced before the event, and you and Cal both got drawn. But neither of you minded, as some of your friends got drawn too, so at least you know you’d have a good time with them. 

As for the party, you decided to dress up as Jedi Knights from that one movie, ‘Galactic Conflicts’. When you found out that Cal is also a fan, you were delighted, and you easily settled on matching costumes. Others also wore costumes from the franchise, and you’d go up to them with your plastic sword and challenge them to a duel, quoting some lines here and there, happy when they’d play along.

An hour or so into the party, you start to feel your shenanigans catching up to you. The air in the main hall, which has been converted into a dance floor, is pretty stuffy, and the bass thrums in your ears. The several layers of robes you’re wearing are starting to cling to your skin since you’ve been running around, taking your Jedi role very seriously. So you decide to step outside for a while, and look for Cal while you’re at it. You lost your companion a while ago in the colourful mass of people. 

You navigate through the crowd, careful not to hit anyone with your sword, and head for one of the exits that leads onto an elevated patio. The evening air is pretty cool, and you breathe in deeply, welcoming the sensation. With your hands on your hips, you stand by the railing, looking down at the cobblestone path that snakes around a small pond. You wonder if there’s any fish in there, and if so, if you could get the chance to feed them. 

“Hello there!” 

You recognise the voice, and turn around with a chuckle, shaking your head. Standing on one of the nearby benches is Cal, his arm extended, sword aimed at you. The lamp post shines a halo-like light over him, his copper hair glistening with specks of red and gold, contrasting his dark robes.

“General Kestis,” you respond, playing along.

”I have the high ground,” he continues, striking a silly heroic pose from where he looms over you.

”That’s not how the lines go!” you laugh, and he shrugs, giving you a lopsided smile. 

“I was looking for you,” he says.

”Yeah?” You lift your sword, shifting into a battle pose. “You want me to kick your butt again?”

”I’m afraid it won’t be so easy this time,” he says, flicking the switch on his sword to elicit a whirring sound effect, and the blue colour changes to red. “I’ve turned to the dark side. It’s Darth Kestis, now.”

You hum, not bothering to cover the fact that you’re checking him out. 

“I have to say, for a Sith Lord, you look really good,” you say, and Cal breaks character for a split second when he can’t hold back the smile spreading on his face. But he’s quick to return to his serious expression, jumping down from his bench and coaxing you to approach with his free hand.

”En garde!” you exclaim, holding your sword up, and he mirrors you so that your weapons form an X.

”That’s not-“ he breaks again with a chuckle, shaking his head. “Ah, never mind. Let’s go!”

You two play fight for a while, adding your own sound effects when your swords clash, throwing banter back and forth, switching to slow motion for particularly cool moves. It doesn’t take long for you to break out in laughter at the silly antics, unable to hold back any longer. This means you let your guard down, and in one swift move he swipes your sword from your hands, caging you against the railing. 

“Gotcha,” he says, panting softly; you two really took this seriously and are slightly out of breath.

”Oh no, whatever shall I do,” you say in mock distress, bringing the back of your hand to your forehead in an exaggerated manner. But the grin on your face betrays you. “So tell me, Darth Kestis. Did you perchance grow very powerful now that you’ve turned? Brought peace to the Republic?” 

“Indeed,” Cal responds, turning both swords off and clipping them to his belt. He places his hands on the railing on either side of you. 

“What about the younglings?” you ask, narrowing your eyes at him.

”All safely evacuated, of course,” he retorts, looking like he might add something else, but he decides against it. Instead, he continues, “I’ve brought peace, justice, freedom and security to our new Empire. I’ll overthrow the Chancellor. We can rule the galaxy together. You know how it goes.” 

His tone is so matter-of-fact, you raise a brow at him with a chuckle.

”So, will you join me? To rule together?” he asks, his tone surprisingly earnest, and it kind of makes your heart flutter a bit. 

Cal pushes himself off the metal bar, standing in front of you with an extended hand. In your mind, you can perfectly imagine your surroundings on the lava planet, everything bathed in reds and oranges. You give him a knowing smile, sighing dramatically.

”You know I always say the Queen should have gone with Vader.” Taking a step closer, you place your hand in his, and he brings it up to his lips to place a kiss on your knuckles. Without letting go, he lets his arm fall back down again. 

“So, what should our first official decree be?” he asks, his thumb brushing over the back of your hand as he comes even closer. You hum, as if musing it over, deep in thought. His face is so close to yours, you can feel his breath fanning over your cheeks.

”Free healthcare for everyone,” you start, and he hums in agreement. “Retirement plans for the Clones. Guaranteed food and housing for all inhabitants.” 

“Anything else?” he asks in a whisper, his lips brushing over your ear, sending tingles all over your skin. 

“And once the government stabilises a bit, I’ll bring you back to the light.” 

Cal stops his ministrations, pulling back to look at you in surprise. 

“Emperor or not,” you continue, bringing your free hand to cup his face. “I’d never let you lose yourself.” At this point, the line between reality and role-play is blurred. You swallow, feeling the heat rush to your face as you add, “You mean too much to me. I’d never give you up.” 

Cal’s brows furrow for a moment, then an unreadable expression washes over his face, and you fear you’ve ruined the moment. You open your mouth to say something, but your words get swallowed by his lips capturing yours. A squeak of surprise escapes you as he kisses you with urgency, but you reciprocate, bringing your arms around him to pull him closer. Cal’s hands sneak around your waist, slipping underneath the outermost layer of robes which aren’t cinched by the belt, hugging you to him. 

After breaking for air momentarily, he tilts his head slightly and kisses you again, this time much calmer. He pushes against you and you take a couple steps back until your backside hits the railing, where the kisses shift into a slow make-out.

“Hey lovebirds!” a voice calls out to you suddenly, and you both flinch in surprise. Cal takes a step back to give you some space, holding onto your hand as he turns to the patio door. Sabine and Ezra wave at you from there and call you inside, several more heads peeking out as well to see the spectacle, and you hear a whistle or two accompanied by cheering.

You groan in embarrassment, burying your face into Cal’s shoulder, who laughs heartily, and you feel it vibrate through your whole body, heart still racing. 

”We’ll be right there!” Cal calls to the group, then turns back to you. He places one last kiss on your temple as he unclips your sword from his belt, offering it to you. 

“Ready to go recruit more people for our cause?” he asks with his boyish smile that you love so much.

You bring your hand up to run through his hair, smoothing it down a bit after messing it up, then take the weapon from his hand. 

“And take down anyone who stands in our way,” you reply, placing a quick kiss on the tip of his nose as you take off. “Race you!”

”Hey, no fair!” he calls after you with a laugh, already spotting another Jedi in the crowd. Truth is, he didn’t care if he turned to the dark or light, as long as he was with you.

PREPPING YOUR NOVEL.

if you want to start your novel but you’re not sure where to start, i’ve collected a bunch of resources to help you along! this includes characterization, plotting, worldbuilding, etc. @made-of-sunlight-moonlight

CHARACTERS.

name generator: this one is pretty handy. it has a bunch of different generators based on language, gods, fantasy, medieval, archetypes, etc.

personality types: this is just the standard mbti personality list. it lists the strengths and weaknesses of each type, as well as how they do in relationships, etc.

enneagram: the enneagram personality types. this may help with characterization because it has “levels of development.” it also lists common fears, desires, and how each type interacts with one another.

emotional wound: your character should have something they believe about themselves that isn’t true. (ex: i’m worthless, i’m powerless.) this should start with an “origin” scene from their past, where something happens to create the wound. then there are three “crossroads” scenes to brainstorm, where things could have gone right for your character, but didn’t due to the wound, and because of that strengthened their belief in the wound. this helps you figure out why your character acts like they do. this is a really important one!!!

worldbuilding template: this is a pretty good template / guide about how to build your world. it talks about geography, people, civilizations, magic, technology, economy, and politics. (you have to download this through email though.)

world anvil: if you really really want to go in-depth — this website is for you. there is so much you can do with this; i can’t list it all. history, timelines, important objects, cities, species — you name it, it’s probably on there.

worldbuilding bible: this is just a general list on things to think about when worldbuilding.

world creator: this website generates an entire planet. you can play around with the amount of land, as well as climate, although i’m not sure since i haven’t used it too much. here is the link if needed, though!

inkarnate: this is a really commonly used one. it’s free and makes good quality maps. you can lay out cities, landmarks, regions, and they even have little dragon drawings you can put on your map.

a tip: don’t over-worldbuild! you’ll end up spending a lot of time on things you won’t need. focus mainly on the things that you will use!

PLOT.

plot generator: this one’s kind of nice because you can lock elements of the plot that you like. that way you can get rid of the ones you don’t like while keeping the ones you do.

writing exercises: this one has a couple different generators, including one that gives you a situation, characters, and themes.

plot cheat sheet: this lists a whole bunch of plotting methods and their basic steps. i would play around with them and see which one works best for your method.

plot formula: this is mentioned on the cheat sheet, but it lists a bunch of beats and scenes which you might want to consider for those beats. kind of fill-in-the-blank-ish sort of thing?

save the cat: a method of plotting also on the plot cheat sheet above, but i wanted to point it out. i have been using this recently by taking a giant piece of paper, laying it out onto the floor, and making a timeline. pivotal scenes go on the right (ex: catalyst), while the bulk of scenes go on the left (ex: fun and games). i didn’t really have a website on this, but here is one that explains the beats. (i might make a post about this later, though?)

story planner: this basically has a lot of templates that cover everything up there. the problem is that you get a free trial for a little while where you get as many documents as you want, then you have to pay for it. (although you can get around this by copying and pasting into a doc...?)

Quinlan made his way up to his room, a cramped and dull space, but clean. As much as he wanted to open the grey box now, he could practically hear Obi-Wan telling him that it was uncivilized to let his food go cold, so he settled on the bed and scarfed it down. It was pleasantly mediocre—better than he expected from a place as cheap as this. The box seemed to whisper to him, which was not that ridiculous a notion.

This is from one of my 16 or so WIPs.....send help.

Footsteps pad gently in the hall, and you turn to see Echo enter the kitchen. He's wearing plain black pants, as he always does, but his t-shirt is three sizes too large and patterned with dark green foliage and red flowers. You're almost entirely certain he borrowed it from Liffukk. You turn the mixer off. "Morning." Echo hums in greeting as he pours himself a cup of caf from the machine. When he takes a sip, his eyes widen. "This is good. What's in it?" "Secret ingredient." Echo takes a second sip, his gaze averted upwards in thoughtfulness. chapter six!

06. jailbreak and detonations

IT'S BEEN THREE DAYS since that nightmare, and the whole jail floor has been eerily quiet again. Soka had gone to check the blind woman's abandoned cell but it looks exactly the same every other time she checked it.

So, instead, Soka circled her cell a few times, unsure of what to do. It quickly turned out she didn't need to figure out what to do because within a few minutes the alarms overhead started to blare.

Soka practically jumped out of her skin, watching as the world around her devolved into red lights and pitchy screams. The wailing and banging activated with the alarms, and to Soka's relief, a small team of guards raced down the hall past her cell.

The sounds of shooting started shortly after overhead, and Soka listened patiently, heart pattering in her chest, as the shooting slowly came down the levels.

Within the hour, the shooting was on her level. 

Soka squinted and could sort of see what was going on. A group of people in armour (was that turquoise?) were taking down the guards. Soka was mighty pleased to see the guards be taken down, they hadn't been treating her all too nice during her time here.

The invaders finished off the guards and Soka watched, interested, as they stalked down the hall, looking into cells. Maybe they were here for the Pike Syndicate member that was brought in a few days ago? Soka nodded to herself, that seemed likely.

"Who are you nodding to?" a young female voice spoke up. 

Soka looked up, startled, to find one of the invaders, but tiny. Soka blinked at her, mouth agape. "What?"

"Omega, who are you talking to?" A male voice scolded the young invader. A tall invader came into view of her cell. He had prominent goggles taking over the visor position in his helmet. "Hunter!" he called out as the young invader—Omega— took a step back.

An invader shorter than the goggled one walked into view. Hunter, the goggled one called him. Goggles moved over to the pad connected to her laser door while Hunter looked down at Omega.

Omega must've understood because she moved back, stepping out of view, and started to whisper to herself. Soka belatedly realized Omega was relaying information into a comm.

"You're Sokanara Tanobi, correct?" Goggles said as the pad sparked and flickered before dying out, the laser door dropping. Soka watched in awe.

"Correct?" he repeated.

Soka nodded her head quickly, turning her gaze to Goggles. "Yeah, yeah." she paused frowning, "...what's it to you?"

Goggles stuck out a hand as if to introduce himself, "I am Tech. We are here to rescue you."

"Yeah!" Omega chirped in, causing Hunter to send her a hand signal which had her grumbling.

Soka watched the interaction with curiosity. "Does he- Hunter, does he not speak?"

Tech tilted his head, she could see his eyes bouncing around her face, wondering why she was asking this question. "He can." Tech spoke measuredly.

"I just prefer not to." 

The voice sent tingles down her spine and Soka turned to look where Hunter had taken off his helmet, crouched next to Omega who had also taken off her helmet.

He was checking her helmet for damages, and Omega was just finding fun in wearing Hunter's. It was clearly too large for her, slipping oddly onto her face, loose around the edges. Omega's hands still stimmed with glee.

A beep to Tech's comm had him scowling before taking a blaster and a datapad from his hip. Soka hadn't even noticed they were there. "Echo's pinpointed more guards coming down to our level, we must move."

Omega slipped off Hunter's helmet, passing it back to him, before taking her own and putting it back on. Hunter did the same to his helmet and held a finger to a round disc on the sides of his helmet. She heard him speaking, the voice muffled by the helmet, before raising a hand and pointing it down the hall opposite that they had come in.

"Wrecker said there's a hidden opening on that side. We've gotta blast it open." Hunter relayed.

Omega's face brightened, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a detonator. Hunter's body tensed in alarm. "What on terra-" he cursed, "Did Wrecker give you that?"

Omega nodded, pulling out some more detonations to match the detonator. "He told me he wanted me to blow something up." Omega shrugged, passing them to Tech who had his hands out. Tech inspected the detonations before nodding firmly to himself, starting down the hall.

Hunter sighed, "Why does no one listen to me," he mumbled sourly as he followed after Tech. Omega looked up at Soka, "C'mon miss! let's go!"

Soka nodded, pushing her legs into motion to jog alongside Omega. Soka briefly looked at the empty cell of the blind woman, a shudder running through her as a vision of bloodied worms flashed in her mind. She tore her gaze away and ran a bit faster to catch up with Omega when she realized she had slowed down.

They reached the other two, who were talking quite animatedly about the explosives. Tech was telling Hunter to set the explosives already due to the limited time they had, while Hunter was saying he didn't want to over-explode the wall as to bring attention to them.

"Aren't the guards already coming down?" Soka inputted as she slowed to a stop beside Omega. Tech waved an exasperated hand at Soka as if to say "see?" at Hunter.

As if to prove Tech's point even further, a bolt from a blaster shot zipped past the group and embedded itself into the wall. It almost seemed like Hunter had already sensed it coming since he snagged Omega, pulling her down to the ground, as the blaster shot was close to aiming at her.

Tech kicked into high gear as well, grabbing Soka's arm and tugging her behind him. Tech passed Soka some explosives and without a word, started to shoot back at the guards. Hunter did the same, and Soka watched as Omega pulled out a large bow and zipped out neon pink arrows.

The trio didn't need communication, a few hand signals was all it took for them to change tactics whenever it was needed.

They had evidently decided to tuck themselves to the grooves in the wall, Tech dragging Soka belatedly with him, and ducked in and out of shooting at the cockroaches of guards appearing.

"As one falls, another just takes it's place!" Hunter called out, irritated.

"Change of tactics!" Tech replied, a few fingers flying in the air at Hunter's direction. Maker if Soka knew what on terra it meant, but Hunter seemed to understand just fine. He pulled a popper out of his pocket and launched it at the horde of guards.

A zapping filled the air, and before Soka could blink, Tech snatched some of the explosives from her hands and tossed it towards Hunter. Hunter caught it easily and passed it to Omega, to which he explained something to her. Omega nodded and Tech turned to Soka.

"Follow Omega's lead, she will explain what you need to do." He said before rushing after Hunter, who Soka hadn't even realized had left.

Maker, she'd be a really bad spy.

Soka turned to find Omega already scaling the wall behind them, easily placing her explosives in a half circle.

"Omega, what do I do?" Soka called out over the blaster fire. Omega turned to her with a beam, "Just toss me the explosives when I ask for it!"

They worked in almost perfect sync, save for some of Soka's awful tosses, and soon a decent detonation circle was created on the wall.

Omega reached to her side and clicked a button on the side of her comm. It buzzed three times and Omega took a step back. "C'mon," she said with a gesture.

Soka followed Omega into the grooves in the wall, tucking themselves into it, while supposedly waiting for something.

That something came a few seconds later, some blaster fire following, and Tech and Hunter slipped into view.

This time, Tech got to Omega first and curled himself around her. Soka watched in confusion as Hunter came up to her, hands empty and open towards her.

"We're gonna set off the detonations, turn your face to the wall and cover your ears." He told her. Soka nodded, doing as he said, and felt his presence behind her as he tucked himself against her like Tech did to Omega. Hunter's gloves felt surprisingly cold over her hands as he guided them to cover her ears, helping to muffle the world around her.

The ground shook under them and within a second Hunter had removed himself from covering Soka, grabbing her shoulder and turning her around. "Alright, let's go."

Tech and Omega had already removed themselves from the grooves, and were returning blaster fire through the smoke. Hunter led Soka through the hole in the wall, revealing a big vast canyon before them. It was one of the grand openings to the lower-levels, Soka realized.

There was no where to run, except to tuck themselves into the side of the wall, and shuffle along. 

And did that Soka did, having watched Hunter duck back into the building to help bring out Omega and Tech.

While Soka waited against the wall, shivering and heart pounding, the whir of a ship caught her attention. She watched as fire spewed out of the backside, the ship coming closer to her current position.

Soka swallowed thickly, thinking she was done for. She tried to shuffle along the wall to get back to the entrance of the exploded hole, when Omega burst out of the hole, Tech and Hunter following respectively.
