I think one of the reasons anti-zutara arguments bother me so much is that zutara isn't real. everyone in their head has a different understanding of what zutara would look like in practice based on their impressions of these characters. like if you're making a post critiquing kata//ang then everyone has a concrete understanding of what we're actually discussing.

so when someone makes an anti-zutara take, it usually looks like either 1) bashing the fans for being annoying (when no fandom is uniquely awful) or 2) fighting an invisible ghost lmao. "zutara is wrong because it romanticises toxic masculinity and katara would never be fire lady". katara and zuko are feeding turtle ducks and he's helping her rebuild the southern water tribe in my imagination so I have no clue what you're talking about, I'm sorry.

It's hard to say. We only see the word agni used in their name for honor duels (Agni Kai), with agni (अग्नि) meaning "fire" in Sanskrit and kai (会) meaning "social gathering" in Japanese. The fact that "kai" refers to pleasant and non-violent forms of interaction leads me to think that Agni Kais were originally a more ceremonial duel to express gratitude to the deity Agni. However, by the Hundred Year War period, it seems that the religious ceremony had evolved/been corrupted to become a form of conflict resolution with legal ramifications.

The impression I get of the post-Sozin Fire Nation is that religiosity seems to be heavily discouraged. The Fire Sages seem to exist only to maintain ancient temples and conduct ceremonies; we don't see them present in any important meetings, so they presumably don't hold much real power in Fire Nation society. We see the children of the elites are taught to pledge their allegiance to the Fire Lord at the beginning of each day (or maybe even at the start of class period), which implies that the position had developed a cult of personality that superseded any religion in the country. The one village in the Fire Nation that seems to follow any sort of deity religion, Jang Hui (The Painted Lady village), is literally marginalized and mistreated by the Fire Nation authorities.

As for the Fire Nation of the past, it's possible they worshipped Agni. It's worth noting that Agni is also worshipped in Buddhism as a minor deity, as well as in early Hinduism. Of course, Buddhism descends from Hinduism, so it still ultimately comes back to the Vedas. Especially with many aspects of the Fire Nation possessing a really strong Southeast Asian influence, it's reasonable to assume the Fire Nation's religious history might have went:

Early Hinduism-equivalent > State-Sponsored Buddhism-equivalent > Imperial Cult

I think it's very possible that there are small pockets of the Fire Nation that still practice Early Hinduism, though they probably did so in secret during Ozai's reign.

The most egregious proof of Bryke's obsession with hating Zutara is completely erasing Zuko's scar he got protecting Katara from Azula's lightning in the finale.

I am so sure that they wanted to give the fandom some fanservice by keeping Zuko shirtless half the movie (which, fan served btw lmao) but they couldn't STAND the idea of the biggest Zutara moment reminder being visible the whole time so they just illogically removed it.

Aang keeps his Azula momento, but Zuko loses his…… hmm……

i think its funny how often i see "not every relationship has to be romantic, ROMANCE IS NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN FRIENDSHIP" argument applied to zutara because of how often the same antis will use the "colonizer x colonized ship" argument because if anything, they're the ones who perpetuate that romantic relationships are more important than friendships. Why is it okay for the gaang to be canonically friends with a so called colonizer, yet it crosses a line for Katara to date him? its okay to willingly and positively associate with a racist as long as youre not involved romantically? because that implies that friendship is automatically lesser than a romantic relationship if youre not willing to apply the same moral standards to both when being friends with a colonizer isnt any less reprehensible than dating them. just incredibly unserious people

I’ve also noticed how often white people will bring up the “platonic relationships are just as valid and it’s okay for characters to be just friends!” argument only when it’s a brown woman getting shipped with a pale man or something like that. People don’t actually value platonic relationships, they just don’t want to see the conventionally attractive pale guy they think is hot get paired with a character who doesn’t fit societal beauty standards quite as much in one way or another. I feel like we should talk more about the racism behind the “just friends” argument with this ship and many other ships like it.

”Aang is the one who reminds Katara to be a kid” PUT SOME RESPECT ON TOPH’S NAME!!! Toph brings out Katara’s inner child, not the sunshine rainbow flower crown inner child, but her internal gremlin. Her pettiness and violence and self-centered mischief. Aang is a ride-or-die friend sometimes, but when they’re together, Katara’s priorities are always 1) the state of the world and 2) Aang himself. Like she can be playful but she’s never really distracted from her sense of responsibility.

With Toph, Katara prioritizes much more childlike things, like having the last word in an argument, and whether her friends think she’s cool, and laughing in a day spa, and petty revenge. Only Toph can drag Katara down to her level of immaturity and I think that’s beautiful
