What’s up, John? I’m reading East of Eden. And I’m reminding myself of how important it is to revisit the works in my “Library of Shame,” take down those old tomes, dust off the jackets, and plunge in....
A Stephen King story didn't frighten me. My own reaction did.
Red Alert on my Nightstand
I still have the Red Alert app on my phone. That isn’t something shocking. Anyone who has traveled to Israel since October 7th probably has it installed and running quietly in the background, ready to scream if rockets are incoming and people need to run for shelter. It has become part of everyday life there. But I never removed it when I came back to the States. The only difference is that now…
Taking Down the Yellow Ribbons
Follow me on Substack! https://adinaciment.substack.com/ For two years, there have been yellow ribbons tied around the trees on my street. There’s also a yellow ribbon sticker on my laptop and a magnet on the back of my car. Between the souvenirs on my fridge from Disney and Washington and Zion National Park are more yellow ribbons and small banners saying “Bring them Home” or “Let Them…
Oops! Sorry about that!
So you know those emails that just spammed you? That was just me not understanding technology. This is my formal apology for filling your inbox with blog posts from the past that suddenly jumped to the top of my site. This is also my formal announcement that I am adding “Managing WordPress Sites” to the “Fax Machine” category on the list of technologies that I will probably never…

Sunflowers
In my garden today, the dying sunflowers painfully reminded me of my friend Miriam and the gold that is fading in front of me echoes that larger loss.
The sunflowers are blooming in my garden. Planted a few months ago, I watched them pop out of the ground, tiny green shoots reaching through the dirt, standing straight and tall through the mass of weeds and mulch that needed cleaning. I left for Israel when they were just towering over me, green sentinels of the garden, their blooms waiting to open at the ends of the tall stalks, so I knew…

A Thank You Letter to My Insurance Company upon Denying the Claim for My Kid’s Medication for the Fourth Time
A Thank You Letter to My Insurance Company upon Denying the Claim for My Kid’s Medication for the Fourth Time
Dear Favorite Insurance Company, Thank you so much for denying the claim for the recommended medication for our child! We never knew how creative we could get with brain tumor cures until you went against three doctors and a surgeon to base your final decision on the vast medical knowledge of Tom in accounting. In these days of misinformation and blindly trusting science, it is good to know that…

The Return
Sometimes we die on the mountain, or we get stuck on Circe's island. Maybe we forget all callings of home, happy to drift in dreams on the shores of the lotus eaters.
The holiday of Rosh Hashanah is right around the corner and it kicks off a period of introspection and teshuva – a word that describes repentance but is literally translated as “return.” We are supposed to look back at the choices and mistakes we have made over the past year and apologize, express contrition, and ask for the slate to be wiped clean. In essence, returning us to what we were before…

A Song for Miriam
Missing my friend.
I went to the ocean to sing a song for Miriam, stood looking out onto the waves as they crashed to the shore and thought about my friend. How she would have loved to have been here. The ocean was her home, the place she went to for peace and tranquility, shepherding men and women to the shore for healing and rejuvenating. I never joined her, promising myself that the next time, the next week, I…

The Books on the Shelves
Th objects we keep somehow, over years, become important not in functionality but just in being.
I’m cleaning out my bookshelves and getting rid of books. Marie Kondo-ing my space and deciding what sparks joy and what does not. Okay, maybe not completely Marie Kondo style. I don’t think I can properly explain how difficult it is to do that. Over the years, and with the help of Amazon Prime, I have amassed an impressive collection of books. They’re everywhere, and while I like to think…

Bumper Sticker Fandom
If we can find commonality in a lightsaber, a dragon, or a sorting hat, maybe, for that one moment, we can forget our differences.
Yesterday, someone cut in front of me on the highway. I slammed on my breaks and leaned on my horn, but the driver sped away without even a glance in his mirror. He could have waved, or, you know, signaled. But no. He was just like, “%$#@ that!” I know I shouldn’t be surprised – this kind of thing happens every day – but over the years I have felt that there is a certain camaraderie that develops…

Ten Lessons from a Wedding
No matter how many times I've watched someone break a glass and yell, "Mazal Tov!" nothing could prepare me for making a wedding for my own child.
I’ve been to many weddings. Cried at them. Laughed at them. I’ve listened to long speeches and short speeches. Humorous toasts and heartwarming toasts. I’ve watched a flash mob and participated in one. I’ve danced to Party Rock Anthem. But no matter how many times I’ve watched someone break a glass and yell, “Mazal Tov!” nothing could prepare me for making a wedding for my own child. It’s been…

On Anniversaries
The anniversaries in my life are a mix of celebrations and contemplations battling against each other for days on the calendar that I count down towards in both expectation and apprehension.
As a kid, the only anniversary in my life belonged to my parents. I only understood the concept in terms of weddings. Fast forward a few years and I’m celebrating the inane anniversaries of high school romances: anniversary of our first date, anniversary of our first ice cream, anniversary of other firsts that I thought would signify my forever romance or turn into, maybe, the celebration of a…

In God's Country
"It was like lying in a great solemn cathedral, far vaster and more beautiful than any built by the hand of man." Spot-on, Teddy Roosevelt.
