rip John Varley, the most gender guy of the 1970s New Wave of science fiction
i was always expecting him to have a late in life transition like Jeffrey Catherine Jones but i never heard about him doing so. i hope he was pleased and content whatever he decided to do in his last years. much of his work was obsessively interested in the possibility of easy gender transition for humans, and of neogenders, and alien genders and intersexes. the protagonist of his largest series, the Eight Worlds novels, is a hard boiled detective who is male in some of the books and female in others. he envisions many futures in his work where gender transition is simply a daily public reality and constant possibility.
he wrote a shitload of excellent stuff, but people unfamiliar with himself would know him from his being the author, unfortunately, of the (excellent) short story that the MST3k classic Overdrawn at the Memory Bank was based on
his short story Air Raid which was published in 1977 is one of the all time great speculative fiction shorts, you can read it online here
my girl got a lotta legs
a thought as I revive this old rag just for the release of YKMET.
I have been having a grand ole time crawling through all relevant tags and reflexively blocking anything that gives me the ick before the game comes out and the inevitable fandom chaos ensues. its like the internet equivalent of snapping on some giant rubber gloves before I dive headfirst into a sewer and that sewer happens to be my home, dammit

I wish age gap discourse hadn't spiraled the way it has because I want there to be a safe space to say "Men in their 40s who date 25 year olds aren't predators, they're just fucking losers"
... honey you just described a predator LOL
No, I said what I said. But thank you for providing an example of how this topic has become insufferable on the internet.
i am honestly burningly curious about how a 40 year old man who fucks around with college grads is not a predator
"College grad" is not a developmental stage, nor is it what I would describe a 25 year old as. I was 4 years out of college at 25. My mother had two children at 25. You can be a fucking congressman at 25.
There's a difference between a man who is immature and buys into misogynistic views of beauty and aging and one who is a predator. Also, many actual predators? Not losers and able to move through society pretty freely being seen as cool and the ideal, so conflating the two isn't helpful.
This is going to be my final response to any attempt at discourse. You're welcome to continue amongst yourselves.
also sometimes a 40 year old and a 25 year old just weirdly find each and it's a perfectly normal relationship - like all human relationships are complex and situational, it's so rarely an either/or thing let alone just one thing only
if a 40 year old dude only dates 25 year olds, DiCaprio style or something adjacent to it, then yeah he's a loser
if a 40 year old dude meets a 25 year old through social event or friends or whatever and they happen to hit it off and make a go of it, and this isn't some sort of reoccurring pattern for the guy, that's just a relationship with an age difference
being predatory means something specific, and man I agree w/ OP and really wish people just stopped ascribing it to any and all relationship dynamics they personally might not like
predator and groomer - two words that need to go up on the "can't use till you learn their meaning" shelf
Dendrogaster (a crustacean that parasitizes starfish)
this is how they look
WHAT DO YOU MEAN, CRUSTACEAN.
my tags need to go in the main part of the post actually
There's a different species of barnacle, Sacculina, that parasitizes crabs in a similar way to this. It has a very cursed lifecycle and I assume the crab is also having a weird time.
I think i've heard of this one.
I just looked it up—it injects itself into the crab's body and replaces the crab's genitals with itself, grows roots into the crab's organs (including its brain), and controls the crab's behaviors so the crab will take care of the Sacculina larvae as a female crab would its own babies—if the crab is male, the Sacculina parasite will make the crab's body produce female hormones to basically change it to female.
This is so cool...how did this even develop? How did the parasite evolve to do that? How ancient would this relationship have to be for something so complex to form?
We are living a fascist government. There is not nuance on that. It's in plain sight, is concrete and direct in the very first weeks of it.
This is being played today, on train stations near and inside Buenos Aires. A message from the Ministry of Security, that it feels that is taken out of the most insidious dystopia-like sci-fi novel ever written.
In a quick translation: "The Ministry of Security informs: if you are going to exercise your right to protest, take into account that you can only do it in authorized places. Remember that blocking a street, avenue or road is a crime punishable by law. If you are extorted to attend a demonstration, remember that you can report it anonymously by calling 134. The Ministry of Human Capital informs that if you are a beneficiary of a social plan, no one can force you to block roads. If you comply with the law, you will keep your benefit. If you do not comply with the law and block the roads, you will not be paid. If you are forced to participate, you can anonymously denounce to the 134."
While this was on the stations, police were entering buses on the entrances for the capital, random buses, checking for people who could have some flag, bombo or any distinct feature that could show that was going to go to today's protest rally.
We are living a fascist government. There is no nuance, is concrete, is not even a month and they are showing the true face. A face that was there, for anyone that could see it. Is heartbreaking that so many didn't see it, and so many are actual fascists that wanted it.

Poem by Palestinian poet Najwan Darwish
I Can Eat Glass
I Can Eat Glass was a linguistic project documented on the early Web by then-Harvard student Ethan Mollick. The objective was to provide speakers with translations of the phrase "I can eat glass, it does not hurt me" from a wide variety of languages; the phrase was chosen because of its unorthodox nature. Mollick's original page disappeared in or about June 2004.
As Mollick explained, visitors to a foreign country have "an irresistible urge" to say something in that language, and whatever they say (a cited example being along the lines of "Where is the bathroom?") usually marks them as tourists immediately. Saying "I can eat glass, it does not hurt me", however, ensures that the speaker "will be viewed as an insane native, and treated with dignity and respect".
Genuinely assumed this was unreality but nope
