#love when an artist repeatedly returns to an idea over years or decades #it's so cool to see what changes and what stays the same!#what's the core of the idea that the artist is compelled by #and how do the changes clarify what the core is #anyway I personally like the earlier iterations in this series the most #some elements of the first and some of the second #I like how un-ornamented the statue and coffin are in the first #and how shrouded in darkness the island and water are in the second #but the sky in the first really compels me - the colours and patterning and the contrast with the trees #I also like how in the earliest two the tall craggy rocks are much shorter than the central stand of trees #and the artist returns to shorter rocks in the end! after experimenting with greater height in between #but the last one feels so overdefined in its bulbousness in the clouds and rocks and even the trees a bit #in a way that feels to me like it distracts from the vibe otherwise created by the composition #I think the fifth one is the weakest though #the placement and shape and relative value of the statue and person in the boat as compared to the entrance stones #just doesn't work for me #looking at first glance more like a weird blobby part of the shoreline than anything #which could work if that were gone for more deliberately I think #but in this context it's not doing it for me #especially since the use of value overall in this one just doesn't feel like it was approached with sufficient attention #art #painting #isle of the dead #arnold bocklin #queue

A very reasonable question! I am still (intending) to use linkding, at that link. But I have been having webdev woes with my linkding instance. And I haven't had the time/energy to sink my teeth into the current issue, unfortunately, due to a change in some life stuff.

In the last few years I have been crossposting my recs to my mastodon, so you can at least see the more recent recs there, at my rec tag: https://federatedfandom.net/@soph_sol/tagged/rec

But you'll also see that there haven't been recs in a while, again due to the change in life stuff.

TWO FREE PATTERNS!

For those who don't know, I'm doing my PhD dissertation on 19th-century plus-size fashion, and as part of it I've been patterning larger antique garments.

Last year, I was able to go to Genesee Country Village & Museum in upstate NY and pattern an early 1800s corset as well as an 1830s dress. Full instructions, photo albums, & print-optimized versions up on Etsy if you need more guidance or would like to support my work, but my agreement with the museum was that I would put simple gridded patterns up for free alongside the paid versions. And those are now up!
