The Legend Of SWORD DOG
Roses are red, that much is true, but violets are purple, not fucking blue.
I have been waiting for this post all my life.
They are indeed purple, But one thing you’ve missed: The concept of “purple” Didn’t always exist.
Some cultures lack names For a color, you see. Hence good old Homer And his “wine-dark sea.”
A usage so quaint, A phrasing so old, For verses of romance Is sheer fucking gold.
So roses are red. Violets once were called blue. I’m hugely pedantic But what else is new?
My friend you’re not wrong About Homer’s wine-ey sea! Colours are a matter Of cultural contingency;
Words are in flux And meanings they drift But the word purple You’ve given short shrift.
The concept of purple, My friends, is old And refers to a pigment once precious as gold.
By crushing up molluscs From the wine-dark sea You make a dye: Imperial decree
Meant that in Rome, to wear purpura was a privilege reserved
For only the emperor!
The word ‘purple’, for clothes so fancy, Entered English By the ninth century
.
Why then are voilets Not purple in song? The dye from this mollusc, known for so long
Is almost magenta; More red than blue. The concept of purple is old, and yet new.
The dye is red, So this might be true: Roses are purple And violets are blue
.
While this song makes me merry, Tyrian purple dyes many a hue From magenta to berry And a true purple too.
But fun as it is to watch this poetic race The answer is staring you right in the face: Roses are red and violets are blue Because nothing fucking rhymes with purple.
Hirple - To limp or walk awkwardly
Cirple - An old Scots word for the hindquarters of a horse
“Roses are red, violets are purple,
My boner for you has caused me to hirple.”
…
My, how romantic!
DYING. I AM DYING.
all i do is sit and think about imaginary but extremely detailed romantic scenarios
I understand the sentiment, but when you write RIP in a sentence please be careful with your presentation, cause I just saw someone sincerely post "Let her RIP 😔" and I immediately pictured them Beyblading their grandma into the fucking stratosphere.
so. A few days ago I got into a… I won’t even call it an argument, because none of them HAD an argument, just very angry voices at the fact that there was no easy way to what they wanted.
BUT.
One of the things remarked was that, as I said I was interested in writing noir horror, that there already was a Harry Dresden, and thus I shouldn’t bother. The blatant inference being that I wouldn’t ever write anything nearly as good, and should just stop any efforts I make, as they won’t rate.
And in the end it returned to me and made me suddenly think ‘Well, no wonder you never achieve a fucking thing, if you think that way’.
Not just because Harry Dresden is not Noir Horror, he’s urban fantasy. Detectives are not inherently Noir, after all.
But also because Dresden isn’t even the be-all end-all of Urban Fantasy!
There’s a dozen detectives in that like, variations on the theme. Vampires, Mages, Monsters and Angels. And for the reader, each one is a different kind of treat. There’s so many variations on the theme of “Girl drawn into the Supernatural’ or ‘Professional Monster Hunter’.
And if your view on the world is ‘Someone has done X, so nobody should ever do X again’, you’ll not only kill your own creative potential, but you’ll rob yourself of a chance at succeeding.
Yes, Stallone did Rambo, and nobody could out-Rambo Rambo, but even for that there was also Commando. And Predator.
Success is not in being the one big name, but rather in being a name. If we shouldn’t try because of Harry Dresden, then Dresden shouldn’t be there because of Sam Spade. And Same Spade shouldn’t exist for Hercule Poirot, and Poirot shouldn’t exist because of Sherlock Holmes.
If you think that there’s only room for one, then it’s of very little surprise to me that the ‘One’ isn’t ever going to be you.
we are in a media literacy crisis
friendly reminder that characters don't need to be saints to be entertaining. and telling a story does not mean endorsement. art does not need to be all about morally good people.
IDK if this was meant as hyperbole but it's literally true:
Adult literacy is low.
Child literacy is low.
Information literacy has shifted dramatically in the last decade, but reputable information sources like research journals and factual news reporting have been unable to keep pace.
We are genuinely in a crisis of media literacy, with ever fewer genuinely factual resources available in the style and language used by contemporary audiences.
It may sound condescending, but we genuinely need to remind people, or worse, explain to them for the first time that art is not evidence of real world behaviour.
So, thank you, for this reminder. Genuinely.
You're correct:
Art does not need to feature exclusively morally pure characters. Art is not proof of the creator's secret, violent desires.

My grandmother was a nurse and worked in the maternity ward. One day she was talking to this lady that had had her daughter the day before and my grandmother asked her what she had named her daughter. And this woman looked my grandma in the eyes and told her that she was naming her daughter Uretha because she'd seen it on her chart and thought it sounded pretty.
