I believe most characters from Danganronpa deserve another chance. Spoilers of course but: through the series we learn that before she had her memory wiped, even though she was abrasive and could be considered a bully at times, she did find herself close with her classmates and considered them friends she'd willingly spend the rest of her life locked up in the school with. And in her free-time events and her bonding moments in Danganronpa Decadence collection, we learn she can actually be a very sweet and caring person under all the lace and venom. She's just a girl from a small town who wanted a life of grandeur. And in this 2025 world, can you really blame her for having such lofty goals?
-
First off, she is actually Taeko Yasuhiro, who did make it into the found family. She enjoys being her Gothic Eurosona (even if it led to not-so-good outcomes in the Killing Game), so why not let her have it here?
But on that note, Celeste did awful, unjustified things in the Killing Game, but:
You must remember that like every other killer, who has made it in here, she was trapped against her will in a situation where she was manipulated to distrust the others and want to escape, since she had 2 years worth of memories of bonding with them and agreeing to stay in the school forever with them stolen against her will. She never would have done what she did if she still had those memories.
She is the Queen of Liars, and her insistence that the reason she killed was for a shallow, greedy dream and that she lacked remorse for it or care about her classmates was just that: a lie. Her actual last words and action before being executed, plus supplementary material like the manga, show she actually killed because she was scared and had hit her limit with pretending to be brave and accepting of her situation of being trapped in a place where she could get killed. She was unable to put hope or trust in anyone or in the possibility of escaping without resorting to murder. She lied about that to still appear strong, instead of weak and vulnerable.
Above all, she's NEVER that bad in any other timeline in the franchise. There are plenty of other continuities where she's an aloof and flawed person but ultimately sincere in her politeness and friendship with other students, with others growing close to her and letting her lower her mask (including the two she killed in the Killing Game). Being part of a found family would be positive for her, especially since her classmates are all here too.

Accidentally killed a kid and purposely killed his partner when he saw he had started a cult which caused a ripple effect leading to the death of another child
Why do you like them?
So many people dog on Jayce for killing that kid accidentally or going straight to killing Viktor without talking to him. First off the kid death was tragic but it wasn't fully his fault and he IMMEDIATELY felt guilty enough to NEGOTIATE FOR AN INDEPENDENT ZAUN which is something that no one else managed to do. He did more for Zaun's independence than Mel, Vi, Silco, and Jinx combined and I stand by that especially since the latter two were actively making things worse for Zaun.
And to the second point, once he saw that Viktor was actively running a cult and mind controlling people, no matter how altruistic, he had to put a stop to it. There is no "negotiating" with someone who actively has violated the autonomy of hundreds of people. Cmon now. Aaaand he was also the one to finally break through to evil Viktor. Jayce is the unsung hero of Arcane and I'm tired of pretending like he's not.

She killed a lot of people, she was an assassin/hacker for hire, she kidnapped the main character, she's tortured people. She tried not to kill people when she went to the "good side" (because her mechanical god asked her to) but she was not happy about it.
(Tbf I'm not sure she's evil enough to be called "problematic" but she's definitely a fave)
Why do you like them?
She's such a complex character with the best character arc I've seen in a TV show. She's done awful things in her life and believed that every one was just "bad code" but she found the found family she deserved and then did slightly less awful things to save them. She is also a very cool lesbian.

Got right on the slippery slope water slide of not correcting a pair of grieving parents and letting them assume he was their deceased son's best friend, slid that slide directly into social media stardom and essentially taking that dead son's place in his family by lying harder and worse every single day so he could feel accepted and supported for the first time ever. The poster kid for the dangers child emotional neglect.
Why do you like them?
He fucks up so so badly in exactly the way a deeply unwell teen with no functional coping skills would in this situation. Tries very hard to not use his powers (lying) for evil (pure self-interest) for a while and then abruptly stops when he realizes he might be able to make people like him, a very new experience for him. Got the Problematic double whammy of both being #problematic himself and being in a piece of #problematic media, so double the haters.

I love evil and powerful and violent women!! I can't get enough of them! She believes love isn't real and chasing it only leads to suffering, but her primary motivation as a character is love. Said love is for a kid she sees herself in and wants to protect, but she's genuinely terrible with kids. And she's so so beautiful arrrgh i need her. She uses flower metaphors all the time. Just the most perfect and poised and fashionable villain ever. She's also only 26 SHE SHOULD BE AT THE CLUB!!!

honestly i watched this series like 6-8 years ago at this point so i Do Not remember exactly what was happening but i think he essentially had an entire planet full of people who he would periodically "send to a new colony" which actually meant: slaughter to harvest the life force of. like livestock. whatever the details were, it was bad enough that every single one of the protagonists immediately turned on him without allowing him to explain himself. like he did still do it. explaining wouldn't really have helped anything. but in my opinion the way he was treated for it was unnecessarily cruel BEYOND just being an appropriate revulsion towards his actions
Why do you like them?
He's so fucked up and sad. He deserved better. He's an excellent "bad victim." He craves attention and affection and affirmation so desperately and yet he decided to go about receiving it in some of the worst ways possible. He just wants to be a hero but he never got the chance to actually better himself. He genuinely doesn't understand why his actions are wrong. It's entirely possible that no amount of acceptance or support would've made him change but that kind of adds to the tragedy of it to me. he was born in a hole and the only thing he learned to do was dig.
Want something fresh and exciting? Enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, and plenty of spice? Representation galore? Well, then, step right up for this new release! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll cringe at this trilogy, sure not to disappoint! That's right, it's...
Guess That Rec Season 3!
Welcome to the THIRD round of the infamous tournament by the mod of @besttropeevershowdown, where we'll be voting on media based entirely on bad, Booktok-style recommendations. Inspired by @guess-that-ship and this post, the rules of the tournament are simple: submit a recommendation for your favorite piece of media, and we'll vote on which ones we like best, BUT, here's the kicker: You may not mention anything about the actual plot of the story. Instead, we will be voting based on promo-post-style recommendations, which can include tropes, representation, setting, genre, very general theme, and anything else, as long as it doesn't describe anything that actually happens in the story!
Example:
Do you want a high school story with a neurodivergent protagonist working through their trauma by going on adventures in the big city? Queer-coded side characters? Male characters breaking through their toxic masculinity and expressing their feelings? Wholesome sibling relationships?
Then you'll love Catcher in the Rye!
You all know the drill: each rec will be assigned a random number and pitted against another rec, we'll vote for which one we think sounds better, and at the end of the matchup the winner will move on to the next round and the identity of the loser will be revealed.
The submission form. As usual, submissions are open for 2 weeks, closing on Wednesday 10/15, unless I decide to extend the deadline.
Greetings, everyone, and welcome to Guess That Rec season 3! Submit all your worst BookTok-style recommendations for your favorite (or least
THE RULES:
All recs must be written as recommendations or marketing pitches. While there are plenty of fun ways to describe a work without actually mentioning its plot, the premise of Guess That Rec as a tournament is that we're not just writing bad descriptions, we're writing recommendations in the BookTok style.
Any type of media is permitted. Both fiction and nonfiction are allowed, but everything must be presented as if it's fiction.
You may NOT mention anything to do with the actual plot or premise of the story. Generally speaking, if your rec includes the phrase "this story is about...", unless it's VERY general, it does not belong in this tournament! You may, however, mention:
Tropes (ex. enemies-to-lovers, fake dating, unreliable narrator)
Representation (ex. disabled protagonist, gay side character)
Character dynamics and relationships (ex. dysfunctional siblings, grumpy x sunshine lesbians)
Setting (ex. in space, in the Old West)
Genre and subgenre (ex. historical fiction, whodunnit, workplace comedy)
Comparisons to other media (ex. if you liked Avengers you'll love this, it's Twilight meets Hunger Games)
General themes (ex. love, grief, family)
General elements (ex. murders, adventures, road trips)
Anything else that has NOTHING TO DO with what the story is actually about!
4. You may NOT make anything up: everything must be technically true, or at least up for interpretation. So, in my Catcher in the Rye example, I can't say that there are "canonically gay characters" because there aren't, but I CAN say that there are queer-coded characters. Similarly, if there's a character in your piece of media who exhibits autistic traits but has never been confirmed autistic, you can't call them "autistic", but you can call them "autistic-coded" or mention their specific traits. The use of weasel words (ex. describing a mentally ill serial killer stereotype as "neurodivergent", or a gay villain as a "major queer character") is allowed and encouraged. (Feel free to get creative: for example, last round we had someone describe the dystopian trilogy Divergent as having a "strong neurodivergent female protagonist", because her brain is... Divergent.)
4a. Here at Guess That Rec we encourage stretching and bending the truth until it breaks. If there is ANY way that something said in a rec could possibly be true, it's allowed, so unless you see something egregious - i.e, calling Of Mice and Men a feel-good teen romance with plenty of canonically queer characters - please do not come into my ask box telling me that something's inaccurate.
5. Do not include any identifying details (ex. title, character names, identifying place names) in your rec.
6. Funnier submissions will be given higher priority. Submissions are funnier if A) they're of media that most people have heard of, and B) they are technically true while not at all capturing the vibe of the media.
6a. Additionally, remember that this is meant to be BAD recs: don't just use this as an excuse to recommend your favorite media! If a Booktok-style rec actually provides a good picture of what your media is, consider either rewriting or not submitting it.
7. Should the same media be submitted by two different people with different recs, priority will generally be given to the first submission, unless a later submission was significantly funnier by the guidelines stipulated in rule #5.
8. There is no banned media: go nuts!
Yet again, I will be allowing resubmissions as long as the new rec is sufficiently different from the one that was in round 2 or 1, with the exception of the winners (Twilight and Red vs. Blue). The full list of media that competed in round 1 is here, and the list of media from round 2 is here. (If you're new to the blog and you want to see the rec for a certain work, just search in the tag "#rec [number that the work is listed under]").
Shen Jiu: Okay, so he's super traumatized and was raised as a slave, and to escape that he became a cultivator. Except now he also has to teach children. And he HATES IT. He canonically tries to murder an eleven year old. The guy who's his "love interest" (it's complicated) he hates. People try to give him a fix-it by giving him a baby and it's really cute, but he would not carry a goddamn fetus to term. He would not!!!!! He's having weekly abortions with the power of xianxia sex nonsense
In au's, they often have him give birth to Shen Yuan. There is no way this man who values his independence and control as fiercely as he does would give up his body or risk his already fractured cultivation (genre-specific magic system) for another creature. He is so self-hating, he would see the zygote as an extension of himself and hate that too.
he poured boiling hot tea on a child
I mean he basically aborted teenage binghe right?]
his ass should NOT have kids and i don't think he'd want them either
He does NOT like children, and even hates one of his disciples (he’s a teacher) to the extent he tried to blow the twelve-year-old up by giving him a fake magic textbook, and later basically dropkicked him off a cliff into hell. He would not want to raise a child or be pregnant, especially since he has a lot of traumatic hang-ups with regards to relationships anyway.
Lane Kim: She gets accidentally pregnant in Season 7 and is not happy about it, but because it’s a family show in the 2000s, no one ever suggests abortion as an option.

Angela Propaganda:
It is impossible to say much about her without spilling spoilers everywhere. She's haunted by the ghost of the woman haunting the narrative. She's stuck in the timeloop for one morbillion years. She is responsible for so much death. She has blue hair and pronouns. She turns into worse, haunted versions of herself. She has narratively significant Closed Eyes. She's done nothing wrong. She embodies the conscious effort to Become (you know how it is). She gave up corporate mangement and now owns a magic library made of peoples. She's breaking the cycle. Everything is her fault. Nothing is her fault. She has a gang of enforcers dressed in fancy clothes. She's wanted by the feds for being an abomination upon man. If the yuri is to be believed she's wanted by the ex-feds for unrelated reasons. She's a star in a Korean Anarchocapitalist hellscape dystopia. She threatens to turn people into popcorn machines. I love her
I'm really simplifying this, but she is an AI made for the purpose of executing her creator's plan by constantly going through a timeloop, resetting every time something goes south. Her task is to aid the protagonist and nudge them in the right directions, as well as pull the strings behind the scenes, making sure the play goes according to the script. She faces a lot of terrible things due to the nature of this script, and eventually comes to resent her creator and the reality she exists in, given that she's experiencing everything 100 times slower thousands of times on repeat. She can't do anything before the scenario is complete, however, due to her programming.
According to her, "all sorts of new algorithms and functions were created and a new history of AI was written" due to her creation (quote from the wiki) in universe as well. Complex AIs and human-like machinery are outlawed, so her existence is basically illegal.
In the second game, when she gets her revenge, she's on a quest to learn about the world and eventually become human.
The fact that she's an ai is very important to her character growth and the story as a whole, so I think she deserves a spot in the tournament :)
Something I find to be important about Tenna's character which feels like it's often missed when talking about him is the fact that, during his breakdown, the effectiveness of your reassurance (if you choose to abide by his requests) significantly wanes.
The validation you provide falls upon deaf ears; the repetition of the sentiment does nothing to quell the now completely unavoidable reality of Tenna's insecurities.
He is antiquated and he knows it, which is why he's helplessly fixated on others corroborating his worth.
At some point, "I love TV!" stops being a comforting mantra. It morphs into something suffocating. If he needs to prompt it, it isn't real. If it's not real, neither is his value. It's addictive empty calories which never satiated to begin with; except now the shame overrides the satisfaction.

What are their symptoms?
Siffrin (In Stars and Time)
I really connected with him and also saw some posts saying they agree they're very OCD coded. To me the idea of their pain of restarting things over and over is very in tune with OCD. If you search up "Siffrin OCD" on tumblr you'll probably find better explanations tho agh.
siffrin has intrusive thoughts about attacking his friends (which he actually calls an intrusive thought in game), manipulating them into liking him (by doing friendly things that will make them happy), corrupting them with his inherent awfulness bc he’s too disgusting to touch, everyone finding out that he’s actually an awful person and hating him, etc
they sometimes hurt themself in an attempt to stop these thoughts.
they find comfort in repetition, especially sets of three.
many of his problems are worsened by his belief that he can’t let his friends find out about the timeloop or else a nebulous “something bad” will happen. he tries to prevent this by repeatedly acting out the same script over and over, even as it becomes increasingly upsetting to do, and berates himself when he messes it up.
they perform magic rituals without realizing that’s what they’re doing bc it’s just engrained habit, via actions such as repeating a phrase over and over, repeating a wish three times into a leaf, etc. part of the magic is believing/hoping/wishing really hard, so it’s manifestation made real. the magic also has some awful consequences (time loop, magic overuse sickness). this obviously isn’t ocd itself bc the rituals actually work, but it can be seen as a metaphor for ocd, bc they’re going to need to stop compulsively relying on wish craft in order to let themself heal. and their ocd traits are probably part of why they accidentally use this magic so much, and in turn the events surrounding the magic worsen their ocd.
he’s very worried about forgetting the people who are important to him, and he thinks that if he holds onto a particular silver coin, then he’ll remember how much he’s forgotten and won’t forget his family too. holding/flipping/keeping the coin is described as “rituals [that] won’t accomplish anything” because “[he doesn’t] need to keep that coin to remember them” — his belief that he needs it is magical thinking.

Chidi Anagonye (The Good Place)
Constantly worries over what decision is morally correct (or correct in general) to the point of ruining his life.
He thought at a young age that he was responsible for his parents staying together.
He's very anxious and obsessive, spends ages trying to decide what is the most moral thing. Has a whole episode dedicated to solving trolley problems.
for those who don’t remember, “mole interest” was an experiment I did 2 years ago because I wanted to test what causes tags to go trending on tumblr. My hypothesis was that all it takes is one (1) post blowing up in an established tag to make the entire tag trend.
I had randomly generated 2 words, which is where “mole interest” came from. I failed to consider that by generating a new tag, it wouldn’t have had enough posts already in it to prove what I now call “the mole interest effect”.
But now it does.
In 2023, we said “fuck it” a la mythbusters and ended up doing whatever it took to get #mole interest to trend. And it did. And it happened to be September 11th that day, and we managed to get #mole interest to trend ABOVE #9/11.
So, in the name of science, I ask you to reblog just this post. Let’s put the mole interest effect to the test.
I work at an institute that specializes in the paranormal. When I started, I thought it would just be a job to start at that I would leave when I had some experience. However, as I worked there more, I found that there wasn’t any good way to quit. As in, through normal means, it’s impossible. My boss didn’t like me, she was cold and didn’t treat me nearly as good as my coworkers.
I, however, married a woman who I’ll call M. M was as beautiful as she was dangerous. She had a corpse in her house on one of our first dates and simply brushed it off, saying it was her uncle who got a bit too tipsy and passed out and asked me to come back the next day. We got married eventually, and she told me the truth about the institute I worked at and the paranormal occurrences I dealt with. She loved me, I told myself.
We had a son, G. When he was born, I knew that M wouldn’t be the best mother to him, so I spent my time trying to find a way to quit my job. It wasn’t easy, and it took me two years. But the answer was simple, and I ended up destroying my eyes and going blind. G was two, and I wanted to be a father to him, at least be able to soften the edges of his mother.
Unfortunately, M was obsessed with power. She had a book that, after binding a piece of skin with a statement of that person’s death written, would trap their spirit in the book, in a way. Not really, more like a copy of that person, but none of those books are that simple. And seeing that I was blind and therefore useless to her, she killed me and bound me into that book.
I never got to watch my son grow up, and I’m afraid M could have done awful things to him, messed him up. Things may have been different if I never quit, I’d at least still be around to take care of G. AITA?
me when my shizun reveals that i was meant to be a bloodthirsty, lust-driven monster who bedded three hundred women and never loved a single one of them and who could scarcely separate my own desires from that of my sword and who hoarded more and more riches for happiness i couldnt buy and accumulated so much blood on my hands i couldnt ever wash clean and i was bitter and lonely and vengeful but even so, he loved me. he loved me so much he died cursing the gods for making me unhappy. he loved me so much he transcended worlds to come make me happy. there was an evil overlord demanding he be cruel to me, and despite that, he gave me medicine, he smiled at me, he pat my head and believed in me and loved me. he came from a world with no cultivation nor swordfighting, yet he protected me. it was probably scary and he had no one to confide in, and i made it so much worse, i misunderstood him, trapped him, hurt him, and yet he loved me. he loved me so hard he resewed the threads of fate and rewrote my destiny, are you fucking kidding?
