Man, I agree and I don't care if it's cringe to say so. My mom has been saying that she remembers the bicentennial when she was a kid, and people were hyped up. She said sidewalks and poles were painted with the colors of the flag. Now? You only see mentions of the 250th anniversary in advertisements trying to cash in on it, really. But among people, nobody’s heart is in it. It could've been great. This person is right and this was part of what was so gutting about 2024; it was the best of American ideals vs the worst of American society...and the worst won. It's still hard to sit with.

It’s just fucking infuriating that we’ve had to deal with this pig ruining everything he touches for 10 years straight because, for various reasons, people refused to take the world’s biggest walking red flag seriously. I know nihilists will say "well this is Good, you see, cuz people shouldn't celebrate America ever cuz America Bad" but here in reality, we're allowed to be angry because it never had to be this way. It was always so avoidable. There are so many people I will never forgive.

anyways (I say this as someone who is deeply critical of the united states government, military, unchecked capitalism, police, etc) I am SICK of people treating america as if it has no cultural value or positives so….. I love u 85 million acres (bigger than italy) of national parks. I love u harlem renaissance. I love u groundhogs day. I love u sweet tea and fried chicken and jambalaya. I love u apple cider donuts and maizes on crisp autumn days. I love u 95k miles of coastlines and new england fisherman and hand knitted sweaters. I love u halloween where millions of people dress up and give candy to strangers and carve jack o’lanterns. I love u small talk and small towns and potlucks and bringing over casseroles to your struggling neighbors. I love u cowboys and ranch hands and arizonian cactus. I love u appalachian trail and dirtbikes and divebars. I love u sparklers and fireflies. I love u mark twain and toni morrison and emily dickinson and henry david thoreau. I love u rock n roll i love u bluegrass and hippies i love u jimi hendrix and nirvana and CCR and janis joplin. I love u victorian houses and jonny appleseed and john henry and mothman and bigfoot. I love u foggy days in the pacific northwest and neon signs and roadside attractions. I love u baseball and 1950s diners and soft serve. I love u native american art and pop art and poptarts. I feel like people who are dismissive of sports don’t realize that they’re sometimes super condescending. like, okay, you didn’t like gym class and have personal grudges against the jocks from your high school! that doesn’t mean that other people are idiots for enjoying something that, when it’s at its best, can connect you to a broader community of fans and give you a chance to appreciate the athleticism that people are capable of when they spend years honing a specific set of skills. there’s something so valuable and human about sports that gets lost when you reduce it to “sportsball” or whatever
