Getting lost in the supermarket
i think the near-extinction of people making fun, deep and/or unique interactive text-based browser games, projects and stories is catastrophic to the internet. i'm talking pre-itch.io era, nothing against it.
there are a lot of fun ones listed here and here but for the most part, they were made years ago and are now a dying breed. i get why. there's no money in it. factoring in the cost of web hosting and servers, it probably costs money. it's just sad that it's a dying art form.
anyway, here's some of my favorite browser-based interactive projects and games, if you're into that kind of thing. 90% of them are on the lists that i linked above.
A Better World - create an alternate history timeline
Alter Ego - abandonware birth-to-death life simulator game

Miniconomy - player driven economy game
Checkbox Olympics - games involving clicking checkboxes
BrantSteele.net - game show and Hunger Games simulators
Murder Games - fight to the death simulator by Orteil
Cookie Clicker - different but felt weird not including it. by Orteil.
if you're ever thinking about making a niche project that only a select number of individuals will be nerdy enough to enjoy, keep in mind i've been playing some of these games off and on for 20~ years (Alter Ego, for example). quite literally a lifetime of replayability.
since this post blew up, i've been wanting to do an addition with all of the recommendations from the comments and tags. but there's a lot of them. some people might be crazy enough to sit down and seriously put them all in one post with descriptions. those people are honestly sick in the head.
anyway, here's all of the recommendations from the reblogs. not all of them are text-based, but it's a great mixture of styles. also don't forget the links in the second paragraph of the OP which will take you to FMHY where there are a bunch more games listed.

the strongest woman in the worldā¼ļø

6:00pm posting⦠Happy Mayu Monday!
You know that Margaret Atwood quote talking about how a major effect of existing as a women in a patriarchal society that objectifies women is that when you are a woman, even when you're alone, you can't escape that self-peception from the view of the male gaze?
The one that ends, "You are a woman with a man inside watching a woman. You are your own voyeur."?
I really do think that pushing this concept precisely one degree further in the other direction would explain a LOT about how we ended up with this whole "Incel, looksmaxxing, manosphere" clusterfuck, I just need 20 minutes and an antidepressant to articulate how

LEVEL 0: People exist
LEVEL 1: "Man" and "Woman" roles are constructed; posed as a strict binary with discrete and disparate traits and roles.
LEVEL 2: Man wields power; Woman relies on Man's approval. One role is perceived and valued as better, stronger, smarter. Requiring Man's approval, Woman cultivates inner "man" in order to see herself from Man's perspective as a tool to better anticipate Man's desires.
LEVEL 3: Man perceives Woman's "inner man"; Man perceives anticipatory and appealing behavior as deceptive and manipulative. The potential ability of Woman to manipulate and deceive Man places Women in a position of power above Man, which Man perceives as a threat. In response, Man cultivates "inner woman": a tool which he uses to perceive the "inner man" who Woman uses to predict and appeal to Man.
LEVEL FOUR: Man "sees" the caricature of "Man" further distorted by the caricature of his conceptualized "Woman" and feels threatened and inferior, but at the same time trapped by the binary which generates this power struggle. Inside of him is a deceptive and threatening "Woman" who he rejects; inside of HER is the Ultimate Man, who this image of Woman supposedly desires the approval of.
If Woman can predict Man, then Woman is an opponent who leverages power through engagement with Man. The only way for "Man" to escape the Threat that Woman poses is to cease engagement. He retains "victory" (escape from woman) by maintaining distance from Woman, and because explicitly admitting the possibility that Woman could ever hold power over Man is Losing, has no option but to tell himself that this is not Fear of Losing Control, but a natural consequence of Posessing Control.
Man rejects any but the most surface-level engagement with Woman, but because "Hiding From Woman" means "Woman Is Threat", and BELIEVING "Woman Is Threat" is unacceptable, Man attempts to cut Woman from the narrative.
LEVEL 5: Man, possessing the "inner woman"'s "inner man" but determined to escape the influence of "woman", mentally erases "Woman" but retains the caricature's caricature of "inner man", who is desirable to BE.
Man possesses exaggerated image of Man, who now exists solely as the Ultimate Desireable Form. In order to achieve this form, Man must constantly see through his eyes, but in order to remain safe in his position of power over Woman, he must erase any trace of evidence that he is DOING this for Woman.
Man must Be the Ultimate Man, because [redacted], who requires Man's Approval.
Having bought in to this dichotomy and fearing the terror and uncertainty of the unknown, unable to shake the foundations of the reality he must now experience, Man forces himself into choosing between floating without purpose or structure in a void where he can no control at all over his environment, or a world where he Cannot be afraid of Woman, he is Superior to Woman, and therevis nothing more important that Being The Ultimate Man Receiving Approval from the Ultimate Man
Hi! Maybe I'll be the first to suggest something.
Allow me to introduce to one and all the moss stitch!
If you are anything like me&, just the name of something can be convincing enough. There are a lot of pretty examples of the moss stitch, but paired with a nice green yarn I think it looks rather similar to forest-y textures! Almost like it looks like moss... š¤
It's a beginner's knitting stitch! I've been trying to learn it myself as I'm revisiting knitting after MANY years! It only requires knit stitches and purl stitches.
You can ALSO crochet the moss stitch but I donāt know about that personally ^^'
Here's the video I've been using to learn this Σ:^
Happy crafting, fellow critters! š¤
Yes!! The first suggestion!! Honestly this has me a little emotional ;]
I've seen a lot of mossy forrest floor blankets out there, I'm sure this would be great for something like that. Or a moss covering a statue.....
Thank you for the suggestion!! šš

Sufficiently Advanced Witchcraft is Indistinguishable from Chores Part 3:
Tonight has ended up being energy management night, I donāt strictly schedule this particular chore, but is something that needs to be done at least once or twice a week.Ā Like taking out the trash, it doesn't necessarily need to be done on a specific day, but you know when it needs to be done. Iāve been doing this particular exercise to manage my energy since I was child.Ā My entire practice begins with keeping my energy organized and tidy.Ā
Get comfortable, whether that's sitting, lying down, or pacing around the room.Ā
Start taking slow, deep, and even breaths. Ā 4 counts in. 4 counts out.
Feel your energy/power/magic/Whatever you call it as it naturally sits at the given moment:Ā Where is it in your body?Ā In streams throughout your body like veins? In pools along the path of your spine per at your major joints? Hovering just outside your body like an aura?Ā Feel it where it is and as it is, unmanipulated.Ā
Begin to draw all of your energy into a singular core.Ā Gather it from everywhere it sits in and around your body one handful at a time.Ā Pact it tightly and compactly, donāt let any spill or drift.Ā
This is where you manipulate your energy to make it easier to measure out with your need. Ā I spin mine into thread, but you could shape yours into a flower and pluck different numbers of petals depending on how much you need, a well that you draw different amounts of water from.Ā The metaphor doesnāt matter, only that you can easily and comfortably adjust how much energy you take and you can keep it small enough to fit within you.Ā
Shape your energy into its new form.
When you are done there should be no loose energy, no stray threads, nothing outside of that one core, everything should be wrapped up neatly and easy to conceal within any personal wards and glamours, of which I have many, and are my next maintenance task.Ā Ā
My next maintenance step is up keeping my personal wards and glamours.Ā Iām not going to share my process for this, thatās a step too far, I canāt give away all of my secrets.Ā Suffice it to say that my personal wards and glamours - which focus on obfuscation, misdirection, and appearing to be less than I am -Ā rely on my energy being this carefully maintained.Ā I am very deliberately āhiding my light under a bushel basket,ā I donāt want anyone - spirits, other practitioners, surprisingly intuitive strangers on the subway, etc. to know what exactly Iām working with in the power, presence, and energy department. *Note: recording of this energy exercise to come.
āPratchett went back to older throwaway jokes (like dwarves being apparently unisex) and used them as metaphors to discuss social change, racial assimilation, and other complex issues, while reexamining the species heād thrown in at the margins of his world simply because they existed at the margins of every other fantasy universe. If goblins and orcs and trolls could think, then why were they always just there to be slaughtered by the heroes? And if the heroes slaughtered sentient beings en masse, how heroic exactly were they? It was a long overdue start on redressing issues long swept under the rug by a parade of Tolkien successors who never thought of anyone green and slimy as anything but a notch on the protagonistās sword, and much of the urgency in Pratchettās last few books seemed to be related to them. āThereās only one true evil in the world,ā he said through his characters. āAnd thatās treating people like they were things.ā And in the last of his āgrown-upā Discworld books, that idea is shouted with the ferocity of those who have only a few words left and want to make them count. Goblins are people. Golems are people. Dwarves are people, and they do not become any less people because they decide to go by the gender they know themselves to be instead of the one society forces on them. Even trains might be people, and youāll never know one way or the other unless you ask them, because treating someone like theyāre a person and not a thing should be your default. And the only people who cling to tradition at the expense of real people are sad, angry dwellers in the darkness who donāt even understand how pathetic they are, clutching and grasping at the things they remember without ever understanding that the world was never that simple to begin with. The future is bright, it is shining, and it belongs to everyone.ā
ā John Seavey, The Evolution of the Disc (via liquidlightandrunningtrees)
one time I went over to a friend's house and their housemate was making paper in the living room, and we saw this big tub full of water they were using to dissolve old scrap paper into a slurry, and everyone was immediately like "oh, you need scrap paper?" and started turning out their jacket pockets and producing expired coupons and bus tickets and crumpled receipts and old shopping lists and whatever else they'd been carrying round with them for no good reason, and passing it all to the paper-making housemate to make sure it was suitable before it got torn up and dropped into the tub, while people took turns stirring the slurry with a big wooden stick. it was strangely ritualistic, like presenting an offering to some kind of temple elder for inspection before placing it in a watery shrine to be devoured and reformed. pulp for the pulp god.
Lost child is forever gonna be iconic for Mafuyu ripping out a poison ivy IV, thatās just such potent imagery. The confusion between nurse and patient, IV medicine a necessity for getting better and poison ivy keeping her sick and trapped, whether by ripping it out by force sheās hurting herself or freeing herself or both, the hospital itself taken by ivy, abandoned and uninhabited and warped and nonsensical in contruction as seen in the other cards, the table Mafuyuās on looks if anything to be an autopsy table.
