Tags like this are the reason I tend to donate extra to AO3 when I can afford to.
Honestly, I don’t even care if people I know donate. AO3 is designed so that a few generous patrons can make a nice thing exist for everyone… But holy shit do I wish tumblr would learn how websites and companies work because it is important to know what motivates them.
On AO3, MORE TRAFFIC IS NOT BETTER HOLYFUCK. That’s only true when traffic = more ad revenue or a better pitch to venture capitalists or something.
Ao3 is literally a nonprofit, kids.
to clarify, rather than scold: The Archive Of Our Own is a nonprofit organization that runs an archive of fanfiction, specifically for the purposes of recording and maintaining all fanfics uploaded to it. it was founded after livejournal and fanfiction.net repeatedly deleted queer and ‘problematic’ fanfics in order to please advertisers and keep getting ad revenue. for decades, fandom was at the mercy of corporations who repeatedly deleted–with little warning and no mercy–whatever platforms were used to host fanfiction, especially dark, queer, kinky, and immoral fanfiction that would annoy corporate interests or scare off investors or offend advertisers.
AO3 is specifically relies on donations, rather than ad revenue, because it is the Archive Of Our Own, and is not answerable to any political agenda other than protecting and maintaining, again, all the fanfiction uploaded to it. there are checks and balances, and there’s a governing board, and they’re all dead serious about making sure that the archive endures any attempts by outside parties to censor or remove its content, no matter how abhorrent that content is.
the archive is an archive, not a social network or a platform. it hosts content and it serves that content to users in an efficient way–hence the phenomenal tag system–but it is meant to safeguard writers and their writing, not to profit from its users. it literally can’t profit off of its users or monetize their interactions in any way, just by virtue of its own structure: all money given to a nonprofit goes towards furthering that organization’s mission.
see, when a company or corporation makes money, it pays for labor and upkeep and then the guys that own the company keep the rest of the money, and that’s profit. when a nonprofit makes money, it pays for labor and upkeep and then if it has extra, it reinvests in various ways, like building new things or improving old things, or it saves the money for future labor and upkeep it might need.
the archive cares that users are able to control their own experiences of it, and filter out the stuff they don’t want to see. they care that users are protected from harassment. but they don’t profit from users’ engagement with the site, so they don’t do anything to encourage traffic the way a for-profit site that’s monetized engagement has.
hopefully this explanation helps someone.
tl;dr, a non-profit archive can’t profit from traffic the way for-profit social networks do, so it doesn’t care about you in a completely different way.

Repeat for emphasis.

Every time I see a post on this website talking about how old people aren’t welcome on tumblr or whatever the fuck, I think of @spockslash and get sad
It occurs to me that people outside of the trek fandom don’t know who dee was so let me elaborate:
In 2018-ish, the trek fandom found a new blogger posting- @spockslash, aka Dee, an OG Trekkie from the sixties who read fanfic in Dan made zines and remembered watching the trek movies in theaters. She was kind to absolutely everyone, adopting anyone who asked, answering all our questions and leaving the sweetest comments on our fanworks. She was a wealth of knowledge, and for a few blessed months she would tell us everything about what fandom was like in the old days, about the way Kirk and Spock was treated before the invention of fandom spaces and the internet. Go look at her blog, the @ is right up there, it’s a wonderful resource.
Dee unfortunately passed not too long after making her blog, and her grandchildren took over the blog, vowing to leave it up as long as tumblr allowed and donating her classic zines and other fandom materials to the k/s archive and Star Trek wikis. My understanding is that the plan was not necessarily to do this, but they were so blown away by the fandom’s outpouring of love for their grandmother that they felt they had to.
Young fans- respect your elders, acknowledge them, treat them like family, and in return I promise you will gain a source of wisdom snd kindness.
Fandom elders- I love you all, and Dee would’ve too.
And to dee’s grandchildren, should they ever stumble across this post; I still miss her posts, even though I’m barely in the fandom anymore. That’s the impact older fans can have on us.
I heard that Abbachio had an eight-pack……..that Abbachio was shredded…..
"there is no reason why homophobia should be a thing in your fictional universe" actually a) I grew up in a homophobic family in a homophobic country and can only explore my struggles and my identity through my writing b) I'm not about to be schooled by Tumblr activists as to what constitutes "good queer rep", most of you all don't seem to realise there are cultures outside those of Europe and USA and "good" is not a universal parameter.
I had the thought of, what if hizashi found the old fanart shouta made of kitty kid? Would shouta be embarrassed because it's old art?
one of aizawa’s best works
you don’t need purity in the material you consume
you have a brain, you are capable of critical thinking, you can sift through the material and keep what is edifying for you and discard what isn’t
flaws don’t necessarily make material worthless
all right i queued this last night because i was already posting a lot and didn’t want to flood anyone’s dash but you guys i need to talk about this more.
like, okay. i grew up REALLY STRICT christian. like. every piece of media i consumed underwent a fine-toothed comb by my parents to be sure there wasn’t anything “sinful” in it. I got into a tearful, screaming fight with my mother over whether I was allowed to watch a piece of educational children’s material on PBS because one of the characters said “damn” once.
(I’m still not sure they did. In retrospect, I think my purity-focused mother misheard something and, having her suspicions confirmed that you couldn’t trust any “secular” source not to be sinful, reacted accordingly.)
(Pay attention, that parenthetical was also relevant.)
Do you know what my teenage rebellion was? Listening to the oldies station in the car when I had my driver’s license and could go places on my own. That was my big fuck-you to my parents: listening to the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel and the Fifth Dimension when they couldn’t tell me how I shouldn’t be listening to them because the creators of that music were drug-addled, free-loving atheists whose own disregard for God and religion might just infect my impressionable spirit. Like I was gonna listen to “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and go do LSD and become an atheist. This was my teenage rebellion in the year 1999.
I’m 35 now. And all right so I became agnostic. But I didn’t become a drug addicted prostitute because I loved listening to psychedelic rock music as a teenager. (And you know what? Even if I had become a drug addicted prostitute, I’d still have worth as a human being, so dissect that one.) And it wasn’t even the psychedelic rock music that turned me agnostic: It was Christianity itself. But that’s another story altogether.
My point here is: Y’all are on here acting like my goddamn parents, “don’t watch this” and “don’t listen to that” because this character does XYZ problematic thing and this author said ABC ignorant thing two years ago at a con when they were put on the spot in an interview. If you watch this movie where a teenager falls in love with someone five years older than them, you’re going to become a pedophile! If you read this book by an author who once used an outdated term for someone in the trans community, then you’re a transphobe!
Y’all need to sit the fuck down and stop acting like nobody ever taught you to think for yourself, because I know damn well that you’re capable of critical thought and you don’t need your media chewed up and spit into your mouth like a baby bird. And I’m an adult and I sure the hell don’t, so stop telling me I’m going to choke because I’m consuming something complicated, complex, and not already pre-morally-dissected for me.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
I uhhhh 🧍 I made another continuation....
A loooooot of people asked me to continue it, and while I usually dislike drawing things just because people ask, I did already have an idea for a part 3 in mind, plus I felt kinda bad leaving it off at a cliffhanger lol

he wasn’t even there to be a contestant he joined the crew as a CHINESE TEACHER but the directors noticed his good looks and begged him to compete. poor guy made it to the finals and if he had been one of the winners he would have been contractually forced to be in a boy band whether he wanted to or not
